NEW YORK -- The Yankees' World Series wait is over. Mariano Rivera struck out Gary Matthews Jr. at midnight to finish a 5-2 victory that gives the Yankees the American League pennant.
They'll face Philadelphia in the World Series, with Game 1 set for Wednesday night back at Yankee Stadium. CC Sabathia, who would have had to pitch Game 7 of the ALCS had the Yankees lost this game, will face the Phillies' Cliff Lee.
There was no one star for the Yankees in Game 6. Johnny Damon's bases-loaded single in the fourth inning was the biggest hit. Andy Pettitte was the winning pitcher.
