All-Big Ten awards handed out

Despite a 8-4 record, Northwestern didn't receive too many individual accolades when the Big Ten handed out its All-Big Ten awards on Monday.

Defensive back Brad Phillips was named to the first team. Quarterback Mike Kafka, kicker Stefan Demos, defensive back Sherrick McMannis were named to the second team. Awards are selected by coaches a media panel.

Illinois guard Jon Asamoah was named to first team offense, with WR Arrelious Benn, RB Mikel Leshoure, QB Juice Williams receiving honorable mention.

The Big Ten also announced honorees for the Big Ten Sportsmanship award -- Northwestern's McManis and Illinois' Williams -- given to student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

A full list of Big Ten awards can be found on bigten.org.
