At the half: Northwestern trails Iowa State, 39-34

John Shurna almost made Northwestern fans forget about Kevin Coble in the first half against Iowa State. Almost.

Shurna scored 16 of NU's first 24 points as the Wildcats jumped out to a four-point lead. But the Cyclones limited him to one point the rest of the half to take a 39-34 into the break.

The Wildcats have had trouble on defense. The Cyclones are both big and can shoot the three, a vicious combination against a 1-3-1 zone. Iowa State shot 7-of-15 from 3-point land in the first 20 minutes.

The Wildcats made just 5-of-14 from long range.
