Blackhawks, Canucks scoreless after one period

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- The Blackhawks and Canucks renewed acquaintances Sunday night for the first time since Willie Mitchell sent Jonathan Toews flying Oct. 21.

The teams met at General Motors Place as the Hawks continued their six-game road trip and there was no score after one period.

Both teams said they didn't believe there would be much carry-over from the Mitchell hit that sidelined Toews six games with a concussion, but there was more chippiness than offense in the opening period.

The Hawks' Ben Eager dropped the gloves with Rick Rypien early on with each landing a couple of solid blows.

Antti Niemi is in goal for the Hawks as Cristobal Huet takes a rest after propelling the Hawks on their current six-game winning streak.

Vancouver holds a 12-6 edge in shots.
