Northwestern coach Bill Carmody said today he expects senior forward Kevin Coble to undergo surgery on his injured left foot and seems resigned to playing this season without his top returning scorer.

Coble is getting a second medical opinion today and Northwestern is expected to make an announcement on his status this afternoon

"The first (specialist) said it doesn't look promising, but  (Coble) hasn't really decided," Carmody said. "He is seeing someone today."

Asked if Coble was likely to have season-ending surgery to repair the Lisfranc fracture in his foot,  Carmody said, "That's what I expect. My guess is he will, but by (later) today I should know."
In an interview with ESPN.com's Andy Katz on Sunday night, Carmody said Coble's prospects for avoiding surgery were slim.

"Basically the bones are out of alignment (in his foot) and he needs to get this done for stability. He has no choice."

Carmody said he already has spoken to Coble about redshirting this season and returning to play in 2010-11.

Illinois coach Bruce Weber told ESPN's Katz that he sympathized with the Wildcats.

"He was their best player," Weber said. "But if he does take the redshirt year, a year from now they'll have everybody back and be pretty good."
