Dick Jauron was fired by Buffalo on Tuesday with the Bills having won only three of their first nine games and among the lowest scoring teams in the NFL.
Jauron's successor was expected to come from the current staff and be on an interim basis only. Candidates include assistant head coach Bobby April and defensive coordinator Perry Fewell.
"I really don't have anything to say," was all Jauron would say when reached on his cell phone by The Associated Press.
Jauron coached the Bears from 1999 through 2003, and the highlight of his coaching career came in 2001 when his team finished 13-3 and claimed its first division championship since 1990.
"I am announcing today that I am relieving Dick Jauron from his
duties as our head coach, effective immediately," Bills owner Ralph
Wilson said in a statement. "I have tremendous respect for Dick and
thank him for all of his efforts during these past four years. While
this was a very difficult decision, I felt that it is one that needed
to be made at this time for the best interest of our team. We will now
focus on moving forward and preparing for our game this week in
Jacksonville."
In just short of four seasons with the Bills, Jauron compiled a record of 24-33 (.421 winning percentage). The Bills failed to make the playoffs in each season under Jauron. Buffalo has not made the playoffs since 1999, tied with the Lions for the longest active streak for a non-expansion team.
Jauron is the first head coach fired in the middle of the season by the Bills since 1986 when Hank Bullough was fired after nine games with a 2-7 record. Bullough was replaced by former Chiefs head coach Marv Levy.
The Bills represented Jauron's third stint as a head coach in the NFL. Besides coaching the Bears, he served as interim head coach of the Detroit Lions for the final five games of the 2005 season. Jauron's overall coaching record is 60-82.

I just posted on another article Firing Lovie is not going to happen plain and simple, Chicago a city of over 5 million people it is easy to find 65000 people to fill the seats for 8 games why pay 11 millon to fire him plus the staff to pay probably 10 millon for a proven coach plus his staff from a business stance it just doesn't make sense as long as there are suckers including myself that will folow this team the business end of the McCASKEYS will prosper.

Ever since da Coach was fired by the stoneless one we have seen a line of stoneless losers come through Chicago.
Don't the fans deserve better?
Time to send the word to the stoneless one that we want a winner of a coach and team.
well we know who's first in line for Shanahan.
well we know who's first in line for Shanahan.
my name is lisa geracii was a true buffalo bills fan know that you fired the head couch may be i could go back to being a bills fan
I agree, Lovie Smith should go next. Get this done Phillips and Virginia.......And as Lovie backs up the moving U-haul to Halas Hall let's hope the one-way drivers include Turner, Babich, and Angelo
The Bears organization has a knack for hiring coaches who can't coach. They should be asking themselves why...because they seem to be the only ones who don't already have it figured out.
Who could forget the 2001 Season; As the #2 seed in P/Offs,
we lost to Philly first round, AT NIGHT !!!
re: Kevin in CA
I'm not a Wanny supporter, but he did go 42-31 with Miami for 4+ years in Miami as a head coach after the Bears
Check out the Bears coaching choices since McCaskey fired Ditka. What have they accomplished?
Wanny - never coached in the pros again
Jauron - never won. will probably never head coach again in NFL
Lovely - heading for 3 straight playoff misses. Really, only 1 good year. Lots of embarrassment along the way.
I guess the dream of the Bears hiring somebody like Shannahan or Cowher is just that, a dream. McCaskey prefers "yes men" who deliver mediocre results.
Is this a surprise...He is a Caucasian version of Lovie. We let him go for the very same reasons Lovie is go through right now. This team is a joke. They better fire him soon and get what's available out there or the Bears will suffer for many years to come.
At least one owner has the stones to can an underachieving coach.
Take note Mr. Phillips and Ms. Virginia.
Virgina,
See...you can fire and no good coach in the middle of the season. It's time to fire lovie. Get it done.
Man he looks like he aged a hundred years since leaving Chicago. Go on vacation dude and get some sun it's just a game...

Lose not Loose
Clown
Jauron, he's the one that jumped out of the pool, right?
Jarron, what's going on with you anyway, are you going to see some action this year?
Some 3rd round we had. Big Stike zone continues.
the Bears haven't had a good couch since the Super-bowl days, I can't believe these clowns get paid to loose... no more bears fan here, gave up on this team.....
I agree with Fred. Should have given Lovie, his walking ticket long time ago. Lovie, stands on sidelines quiet, and pretending, he's a real thinker. While Bears, keep losing. And whats this BS Chicago, keeps going to Dallas, for head coaches? No other citys/teams, with winning records?
Tribune's haugh set to write article complaining that bills owner can't affort to fire jauron, and should keep him until his contract runs out. Haugh goes on to blame jay cutler for the bills losing and getting jauron fired.
We can only hope that Lovie Smith, aka Dick Jauron with a tan, is next.
