Does Damon make sense for White Sox?

By Phil Rogers

PHILADELPHIA -- The White Sox have choices to make in an outfield that currently has only two 2009 regulars -- Carlos Quentin and Alex Rios -- signed for 2010. The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo believes the Yankees' Johnny Damon, a free agent after the World Series, would be a good fit. I'm not sure the Sox have the flexibility to pursue guys like Damon and Bobby Abreu after splurging on Jake Peavy and Alex Rios at midseason.

In addition to a corner outfielder, the White Sox also have a DH opening. They've got some internal options but outfielders Stefan Gartrell and Jordan Danks seem like reaches, and the Sox want their best young hitter, Tyler Flowers, to catch at Triple-A rather than fill a DH hole in Chicago.

Here's Cafardo's Sunday column with the Damon-White Sox reference.

Pat Kelly played Right Field he played 61 games in center field in his whole career if you don't believe look it up Basebal Ref...

nadasurf: How CQ IS Damon you ask? They both play the game about the same with the same skill sets, AND they are both well beyond their productive prime. DBax got rid of CQ due to his attitude, temperament, and inconsistency. Does that pattern sound familiar? They also are about the same height, and both think that they are better than they play. Enough for ya? It's always a pleasure hearing from you.

If we have Kotsay, let him play first and Paulie can DH. Rios will be in center and Quentin in right, so all we need is a LF. I am fine with Pods, especially with the way the rotation is going to be. Spend the money (if there is any) on the bullpen. This is where the season will be won or lost.

Damon? BWHAHAHAHAHAHAaaa... ahh...

Oh wait you're serious???

Pat Kelly used to play CF most of the time.

Gonna be lots of rumors such as this one on Johnny Damon. Pretty sure the Sox will pass this one by. Am OK with bringing Scotty Pods back--if we can get a first base coach who understands basestealing (whoops, may need a third base one who won't let his runners get picked off of third as well).

Assuming Pods does return, I think our run producers are getting too long in the tooth. If we go after any "bats" over the winter, this is the area to address. Won't be surprised if we don't work out something with Tampa.

We already have an outfielder with a noodle for an arm. Scott Podsednik.

Hey Toby.

You missed the most obvious Cub who is a DH only. That would be Alphonso Soriano. But please, Sox, leave that overpaid bust on the north side along with his 200 strikeouts annually.

Harry Carey was a real prince he said it alright about No Neck Williams and Carlos May even though May played Left Field and Williams in Right Field the only guys who played between those guys in 71 and 72 were Jay Johnstone,Rick Reichardt, Mike Hersberger could throw so it wasn't him it had to be Johnstone Or Reichardt ,Pat Kelly played right field ... and the real prince comment I was being SARCASTIC..I hated the S.O.B.

Sign Damon? No thank you.

1000 Taters, you never let down...
How on living earth is Quentin Damon?

The Sox starting lineup looks fine for 2010. It's the bench that I question. The Sox don't have one.

For example, Getz should start at 2b. But what if he gets injured again? All Getz has backing him up are a pair of marginal A-ball level players (who shall remain nameless).

How about we send Ozzie to the cubs, he can re-instate Milton Bradley and Milton can be his interpreter? Here's the catch, the cubs also have to take Rios and KW too. If that wouldn't "Clean House" nothing would. Note to Toby: Keep your cubs on tne north side, the Sox have enough garbage.

LOL Reminds me of an ol harry carey comment. No Neck in Center, no thumb in right and no arm in left.

Ok, No Neck was Walt Williams, no thumb was Carlos May, who was no arm?

Steer clear of them both. I would prefer to take a risk on Brian Giles on an incentive based contract. Otherwise look for someone with some mileage left on the clock.

Both Damon and Abreu are too OLD. Maybe 2009 was the last great hurrah for each of them. Let's wait to see the entire list of available free agents before we start handing out huge contracts.

LOL Reminds me of an ol harry carey comment. No Neck in Center, no thumb in right and no arm in left. Say no to Damon. Sheesh this is awful

The Cubs have 2 players who are both prototypical DH - Jake Fox and Micah Hoffpauir.

Let's make a deal. Which one to the Sox and who does the Cubs get in return?

how about milton bradley he fit in good with ozzie

Damon? How about Ron Northey. If he were still alive he might still be under 100! Come on! The Tribune actucally paid SOME IDIOT TO COME UP WITH THIS ONE? Carlos Quentin IS Johnny Damon! That's working out real well! I got an idea - since the SOX paid all that money for Rios - how about Damon in left and left center - and Rios in Right center and right? Why try and get a 3rd outfileder when, thanks to KW, we're stuck with enough overpriced/over-paid/undersachiever talent already? OK - none of this serious, but if that article is serious, then someone is delirious. Abreu would be a good add (some outfield/some DHing) but beyond that, let's stop the bleeding with some GOOD Moves this year. Damon certainly is NOT in that mold.

Just say no to Johnny Damon, in fact a few weeks ago in a story at Sports Illustrated he was one of the free agents listed under the heading that basically said, 'stay away from at ALL costs!"

The Sox don't need over the hill players looking for one last paycheck, they need players in their prime...if it costs money, well that's to damn bad.

Do you want to win or increase the size of your profit margin?

Sign a 36-year old who 1) hit 17 of his 24 HR at Yankee Stadium this past season, and 2) can't throw.

Yeah, that sounds just brilliant.

WS need to have a outfielder that has a throwing arm
