EDMONTON, Alberta -- During their current six-game winning streak, the Blackawks are playing well in all facets of the game.
The defense has been stingy, the offense is lethal, special teams have been stellar and goaltender Cristobal Huet is at the top of his game.
The Hawks put it all together in their 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night at Rexall Place. It was the hottest team in the NHL's second win to open their current six-game road trip after the Hawks hammered the Calgary Flames 7-1 on Thursday night.
"Right now we have everything going in the right direction," center Colin Fraser said. "You have to keep it going. You can't be satisfied with where we'are at. We want to get to the top and we're not quite there yet."
No, but they're getting there. The win over the Oilers gave the Hawks a 14-5-2 record and their 30 points moved them into second in the Western Conference. Only San Jose has more points in the conference with 36 in 25 games, four more than the Hawks.
"It's what happens when you play together," winger Dustin Byfuglien said. "Sooner or later you're bound to connect and play as a team all around."
Next up are the Vancouver Canucks in the second game of back-to-backs. Playing on consecutive nights on the road is a daunting task but the way the Hawks are playing they can't be counted out.
"It's never easy but hopefully we saved a lot of energy for (Sunday night)," defenseman Brian Campbell said. "Maybe you have to play a little bit different. You can't take as many chances. We didn't like the way we played and how it finished up last game against them. It's going to be a big night for us."
About that last time the teams played. The Canucks beat the Hawks on their home ice 3-2 on Oct. 21. It was during that game that Vancouver defenseman Willie Mitchell crunched Jonathan Toews with an open-ice hit that caused the Hawks captain to miss six games with a concussion.
"I'm ready," Toews said. "I'm not going to be too concerned with (Mitchell) too much. I'm just going to go out there and play hard. We all want to get two point considering what they did to us in our building. What happened, happened. I'm not too worried about that. I'm just going to show that I'm not worried about anybody in particular on their team."
Expect Antti Niemi to get the start in goal for the Hawks while Huet gets a much-deserved rest.
