Beckham ready to go to work at second for Sox

Gordon Beckham knows his days of relaxing this offseason are coming to an end, especially now that he's moving from third base to second base for the White Sox.

"I'll probably have to work as hard, if not harder, than I did at third base," Beckham said today after learning he would change positions to make room for newly acquired Mark Teahen.

Beckham said that because of the position shift, he would not add as much muscle as he planned because he knows agility will be a big part of his new duties. He plans to work with bench coach and former second baseman Joey Cora in January either in South Florida or near Beckham's Atlanta-area offseason home.

"I played there before," said Beckham, recalling that he played second in the Cape Cod League in 2007 and in the Arizona Fall League last year. "I'm prepared to do it, and I'll be ready to go."

Beckham should be at Shortstop and Alexi at second as has been mentioned but not only for Alexi's errors but also for his "dumb" plays not touching the bag, not being in position for pick-offs, not calling for pop-ups and watching Pods letting it fall between them, poorly or carelessly thrown balls to first or second. For all Alexi's errors,20, there were several misplays not counted as errors in today's game.
Why is Ozzie and KW even thinking of keeping Alexi at Short when we have another Jeter right next to him and their stubbornness prevents them making the correct decision.
Also, KW, please forget about Pods he has no more to give, thank him and forget him.

I don't know why they don't move Beckham to short and move Alexei back to second. Alexei makes way too many errors to play short.

JD is no longer a viable option... especially at $12M/yr. He'll be 37, has slowed down significantly, is no longer a plus defensive player (if anything he's below average now) and his production has fallen off. So Sox take buyout at about $1M, and free up $10M+ if they want to spend it to pursue Figgins or some one else. Konerko is still under contract for $12M with full no trade clause so he's much harder to move.

Dye was a great ballplayer over the majority of his career. However, the man is now 36 years old and has slowed down. His play in right field showed it.Many balls got by him to roll to the wall for doubles and triples. He no longer can cover the ground he once did.His physical skills are in decline. His heart may be big but aging take its toll. His batting average fall off in the second half of two consecative seasons shows that he now longer has the stamina for the daily grind, and 12M for a part time player doesn't make sense. Thanks Jermaine for being a class act while with the White Sox.

That's ironic Nada Surf. If I were stereotyping Cubs fans, I'd say they're "what have you done for me lately" types who throw their players under the bus whenever they slump. Jermaine Dye was Series MVP in '05, and has been one of the most productive RFs for years. You can pick a White Sox player who's been wire-to-wire excellent each of the past two seasons?

Your expectations, like the stereotypical CUBS fan, are unreasonable.

And since when is sticking up for yourself whining? Is that what you do at work? Tell your boss that you should be passed over for someone else?

It's remarkable how many people on here want Jermaine's Dead back after he: whined through the entire 2007 season for a better contract; got the contract and then choked badly late in the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

You guys are SOX FANS!
NOT CUB FANS!
Hold your team to a higher standard!

I don't understand why the Sox want to part ways with Jermaine Dye. He's a good player. I would rather see them dump Konerko than Dye.

David Beckham is going to Milan not second base.

Sooooo excited to add another player from KC. Sisco, MacDougal, Horacio Ramirez . . . it's like a gold mine. Go get 'em, Kenny! Snap up Farnsworth and Alex Gordon next!

Another minor league move for a major league team.Whats sad is that the fans buy into it.The team needs major rebuilding but they are afraid to talk about that.Only luck has the Sox in contention next year.Hey Kenny Williams find some TALENTED ballplayers. Not just the retreads of Kotsay,Rios and now Teahen who are quality backups not starters you count on to win a WS.

How great is it that Beckham is willing to do whatever needs to be done for the White Sox to succeed? What a fantastic attitude!!!

I'm glad this is the move and not Teahan to RF. They can find better choices for the Of than Teahan, maybe even a Dye smaller contract.

Remember a young guy named Sandberg moved from 3rd to 2nd. That worked out well, didn't it.

This is a great move, as it affords the White Sox a great deal of flexibility. Teahen is a lot like Kotsay, solid contact hitter who offers the Sox a lot of options. He will have better numbers playing a regular position and in a hitters park--potential 25/90 guy. Like the idea of Beckham at 2nd, where he can really excel, he did a credible job at 3rd but will be a lot more comfortable playing a position he's comfortable with.

Remember, Viciendo is down on the farm and only a year away from making the team. If he follows in Alexei and Beckham shoes, that means he'll be called up sometime in May. Put him at 3rd, and we have a pretty solid hitting infield.

I like Beckham more and more....what a great attitude to have for a player that could have a huge ego after winning ROY honors

I think Gordon Beckham will make the adjustment to second base just fine. Beckham played second back in Spring Training, and there was a great deal of talk dating back to the Arizona Cactus League that he, not Chris Getz or Jayson Nix, should've broken camp with the Southsiders instead of having to learn a completely new position once the White Sox recalled Gordon in June at third base. Beckham did a good job at third once he replaced the disasters that were Josh Fields and Wilson Betemit (remember him, Sox fans?) early on in the 2009 season. While I'm not exactly enamored with Mark Teahen's body of work and the trade sending Getz & Fields to Kansas City, the White Sox move of Beckham to second base is the correct one over the long term.
