Haugh: Bears have seen this movie before

MINNEAPOLIS -- All Bears defensive end Adewale Ogunleye could do today as he walked slowly off the field after Brett Favre's rollout 10-yard TD pass to running back Chester Taylor was shake his head.

Ogunleye shook his head in disgust, but the rest of us did so in amazement seeing the oldest quarterback in the NFL scramble to the perimeter to create a clearer passing lane. Guys his age just aren't supposed to be that good on the run, in a moving pocket, in space.

Thanks to Favre, 40 is the new 30 for quarterbacks.

The Bears have seen this movie before, but the jersey on the leading man was green, not purple.

Predictably, Favre's ability to pick the right receiver has been the biggest difference in a 24-7 game in which the Bears have slowed down Adrian Peterson better than maybe even they expected.

Tight end Visanthe Shiancoe, one of Favre's favorite receivers, didn't catch a pass until the final drive of the half when he capped it with a 6-yard TD reception.

When did Sydney Rice become Terrell Owens anyway?

Peterson has lost a fumble and been bottled up for 35 yards on 11 carries. So far the Bears tackling looks improved and their effort up front impressive. They will need to apply more pressure from the front four in the second half - the only sack of Favre came courtesy of a blitz from safety Al Afalava.

But will it matter? Not unless the secondary challenges routes and shows ball awareness that has been missing in the first half. Minnesota's outside receivers are doing whatever they want.

The Bears haven't been manhandled yet this game still could end up being ugly as Bears defensive end Alex Brown worried earlier in the week. Now that's confidence.

In the battle of explosive rookies, Percy Harvin is getting the best of Johnny Knox. Harvin made an impressive 15-yard TD catch from Favre in traffic and added a nifty 35-yard run on an end-around play. Harvin's impact might even have been greater if not for Robbie Gould consistently booting kickoffs in the end zone.

As for Knox, he caught a perfectly placed 22-yard TD pass from Jay Cutler but also fumbled on a kickoff return. The Vikings' Kenny Onatoiu recovered at the Bears' 31 and Ryan Longwell turned that mistake into a 52-yard field goal. That marked a big momentum shift... i.e. the horn started getting louder in the Metrodome after that.

Knox's ability to beat Benny Sapp on the TD fooled the Bears into thinking they could do the same thing on the opposite side of the field. But the other cornerback, Cedric Griffin, is more proven and polished and picked off Cutler's underthrown pass to Knox late in the second quarter. Knox had beaten Griffin by a shade but the throw had to be perfect - and it wasn't.

That was Cutler's worst throw of an otherwise solid first half for him. But it was costly because it cost the Bears points after they had moved the ball deep in Vikings' territory.

The ricocheted second pick by Jared Allen, a ball batted into the air by E.J. Henderson as he broke on Earl Bennett, is just football and not Cutler's fault.

Take away the first interception, and Cutler showed the necessary poise in one of the toughest, loudest venues in the NFL. The Bears obviously detected a hole in the middle of the Vikings' pass defense that they thought they could exploit with tight end Greg Olsen. Olsen caught six harmless passes for 38 yards.

Could they be setting up the Vikings for something deeper in the second half?

They better be. Safe and efficient won't good enough to overcome a 17-point deficit against the most complete team in the NFC.
