Bears' Cutler talks about reducing red-zone picks

By Dan Pompei

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler touched on a variety of topics, including some of his travails, today at his weekly news conference.

Here are some of his comments.

*On red-zone interceptions: "[Coaches] know I'm aware of it  They know I'm going to be more critical of myself than anybody else. They don't have to say a lot to me."

*On cutting down on red-zone picks: "We have to put ourselves in good positions and be careful with [the ball]. If we've got to take three points, we have to take three points, except in situations where we have to get a touchdown, we're down, trying to win a football game. At the end of the day, if you get down there, you want to at least get three."

*On problems on the road: "It's tough to play on the road in this league. I think everyone knows that. Defensively, I haven't seen anything from other teams that's really shocked us or made us struggle. Crowd noise hasn't been that big of a factor. We go on silent [count] a lot. But nothing really stands out."

*On using the pass to set up the run: "You have to figure out how your team is built  and stick to it. That's how (Eagles coach) Andy Reid does it. He's not going to go back against that philosophy. Every offensive coordinator is different."

*On how the Bears are built: "That's a good question. We try to run the ball. We've been in some situations where we've been forced to pass. At the end of the day you have to run the ball in this league to win."

*On the Eagles' defense: "Different personnel out there, but still the same scheme, a lot of secondary pressure, really active front four, linebackers are buzzing around. Asante Samuel is one of the best corners in the game. They've got a really good defense."

*On being forced to pass in lopsided games: "If we get in a one-dimensional game, defensively they know that. We're going to get certain coverages. The front four doesn't have to worry about much. So it's a tough situation."

*On using Devin Aromashodu more: "I'd like to see him. He's a different type of receiver for us, a little taller. Still has the speed. Presents a different target for me. If we could sprinkle him in and keep building his confidence, we don't want to overload him, but to put him in different situations, get him in the seams, some back shoulder stuff, that would be good."

*On Donovan McNabb: "He's done a great job. Donovan went through a lot of ups and downs. Each year battles back. He's constant. He's steady. He's fun to watch."

*On showing leadership in tough games: "We have to stay positive when things are going bad like that. You have to keep the guys believing in the huddle, which I think they do. They know I'm going to bounce back. They know no matter what happens, I'm going to keep fighting out there."

*On if he ever has had such a bad stretch performance-wise at any level: "Not that I can remember."

*On if he would have benched himself after four interceptions: "No, I'm not going to bench myself."

On showing leadership in tough games: "We have to stay positive when things are going bad like that....."

Come on! Enough is enough already! You have NO authority whatsoever to make any comments on leadership. Talk is cheap, and your idea of leadership to sit alone at the end of the bench and sulk. Man up and get your head on straight, then maybe you can help your teammates. Until then, they see the same thing that everyone in the stadium and TV viewers see, a waste of talent.

How about this brilliant idea: Don't throw inside the five yard line.

The Ron Turner offensive philosphy has poisoned Jay Cutler.

Got ro fire offensive coordinator Ron Turner.

Take a look at the NFC standings right now. Take out Minnesota, New Orleans, Detroit, St. Louis, and Tampa Bay and ALL the teams are bunched together. AND we still have 2 games against the Vikings.

If in August you were told that Jay Cutler would have 17 INT's after 9 games and the Defense gave up 2 40+ point games in 3 weeks... you would think the Bears record was 2-7. BUT we're 4-5. That's not bad, HAVE SOME FAITH IN THE TEAM AND COACHES!!! Jay answered all these questions the way you want a leader and competitor to answer.

GO BEARS!!!

Everything will work out! this team isn't use to a real QB so lets see if the team can bounce back and get maybe 5 wins ! The vikings can be beaten and I'd like to see the Bears do it in there house and ours and for the Packers we owe them big time

He's had his picks/bad games... But I STILL Believe He Takes a Snap Better than Rex, Turner is the Real Culprit Behind our Offensive Woes! $hi... Play Calling with the Personnel Packages in the Game on Down and Distance.... And Lovie being the Head Coach responsibility falls on Him Too! I Think if We are Going To Pass, then 3/4 Wide with Olsen in... Screen Every Time to Forte if the Defense Blitzes!!!

val has a point...

when we can't run, has a offensive line that lets a 3man rush pressure and sack our qb, i don't care if its brady or joe montana in there they're not gonna do much better

He will get this fixed.

It's really ALL up to Cutler to fix his HEAD, all he has to do is THINK before he throws. AWFUL interceptions like the one's in Frisco and Packers games are all his FAULT, end of story people!! If he throw the ball away, the Bears get a possible 3 points and momentum. He throw easy interceptions, guess what-you give the other team momentum...easy as that. YES, I wouldn't mind a change at OC, but let's not coddle Cutler either. If Cutler cannot FIX his THINKING, then the BEARS just got a LEMON as a QB...sorry to say.

Once we "get off the bus running" I think the passing game and Cutler's INTs will sort themselves out. Maybe investing in a new offensive line and new secondary and new defensive line will also help.

Dan,

It all gets solved when Lovie solves the running game...otherwise...we have a one dimensional game and the defensive backs just sit back there (not worried about a non-existent running game) and wait for an opportunity to intercept a pass. Even a 2 year old understands that...why can't you?
