More Breaking Sports:

Mike Martz, Bears' next offensive coordinator?

| 3 Comments | UPDATED STORY

The Sun-Times reports: In what seems like a simple enough connecting of potential but not publicly declared dots, the Sun-Times reports that the architect of The Greatest Show on Turf would 1) like to coach again and 2) could be interested in doing it in Chicago should Ron Turner take the fall for the Bears' offensive struggles this season.

So, Mike Martz and Lovie Smith: getting the band back together?

Perhaps so, if the unnamed source the Sun-Times cites is to believed. It certainly can make some sense, especially if Smith can get past Martz's criticism of quarterback Jay Cutler's interaction with the media.

Or maybe it's just Martz reminding the NFL world he's still out there? We'll see.

David Haugh's quick take: Someone please explain the genius of Mike Martz regarding Wednesday's reported interest in joining the Bears coaching staff.

If Martz is so smart, why would he be so dumb to telegraph through an unnamed source close to him in the Sun-Times the remotest interest in the Bears' not-yet-vacant offensive coordinator job?

If Martz is such good friends with Lovie Smith, wouldn't he realize the biggest way to disrespect Smith would be to distract him or his football team in the middle of the season?

Didn't Martz already make life uncomfortable enough for Smith earlier this season by calling out the immaturity of Jay Cutler, the quarterback Martz now reportedly would love to coach?

If this report has any validity, it's time for The Genius to take a football IQ test to see if the label still applies.

FORGET ABOUT MIKE MARTZ !!! HE'S ALREADY PROVEN THAT HE'S A LOOSER WITH A BAD FOOTBALL TEAM, THE ST. LOUIS RAMS. THE BEARS DEFINITELY NEED A NEW COMPLETE SQUAD OF MANAGEMENT, INCLUDING A HEAD COACH, OFFENSIVE COACH, DEFENSIVE COACH AND ANY OTHER TYPE OF COACH THAT CAN LIGHT A FIRE WITH 2 STICKS; PLUS A NEW GENERAL MANAGER, WHO SHOULD REPLACE JERRY ANGELO, FOR FAILING TO ADDRESS THE FACT THAT HIS COACH SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED WEEKS AGO, BEFORE IT WAS "TOO" LATE, WHICH IT NOW IS !!! I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THE MCCASKEY FAMILY HAS SAT IDLY BY AND WATCHED OUR FB TEAM SINK TO AN ALL TIME LOW, DUE TO A MANIPULATION OF IGNORANCE AND STUPIDITY !!! THE RUMBLE FROM THE CLOUDS MAY IN FACT BE THUNDER, BUT THE RUMBLE FROM BELOW IS DEFINITELY THE PAPA SLAMMING HIS FIST AT THE FOLKS WHO ARE ALLOWING THE FB FANS OF CHICAGO TO HAVE THEIR TIME WASTED AND INTELLIGENCE RUISED AND BRUISED !!!

A dead dog would be a better coach than Ron Turner. The guy is awful.

THE TURF IN CHICAGO IS AWFUL, THEY NEED FIELD TURF, WITH ALL THE EVENTS AT SOLDIER FIELD, CONCERTS, ETC, THEY NEED A PERMANENT SURFACE, FIELD TURF IS BETTER THAN ASTRO TURF, AND PLEASE STOP COMPARING SOLDIER FIELD TO GREEN BAY, GREEN BAY'S FIELD IS IN WAY BETTER SHAPE THAN SOLDIER FIELD, I DON'T THINK THEY ALLOW HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TO BE PLAYED ON GREEN BAY'S FIELD, AS WELL AS SOCCER GAMES AND CONCERTS!
YOU COME OUT CHEAPER WITH FIELD TURF ANYWAY, THEY KEEP RESODDING SOLDIER FIELD, BUT TO NO SUCCESS!

"They don't need field turf. Do they have it in Green Bay? Cleveland and Denver both have grass, and have weather equal to or worse than Chicago, at least precipitation wise. "

They NEED to stop selling out the field to every stupid show that comes into town, this includes U2 concerts, high school football, rodeos, and whatever else they destroy the field for.
I mean, they already destroyed the landmark status of the Stadium so I guess they want to finish it off.

You can keep Martz....a lot of coordinators could have won with Warner, Faulk, Holt and Bruce in their primes. what did Martz do in SF or Detroit? Sure, they weren't loaded with talent, but neither are the Bears. Plus, he was a pain in the butt in both cities.

The defense has played good at SF, GB, and against Philly, and did well against Atlanta for that matter. Stats can be deceiving, as they had some horrible games too, but the previously mentioned four were games the Bears could have won, except for the inept offense, which starts with the line and the lousy receivers they have. There is not one receiver they have that's a 1 or 2 on a good team. Personally, I'd fire the whole lot, Angelo for drafting winners like Bauzain (sp?) and Okwo in the second round, just two name two off my head, and Turner and Lovie to boot.

you are not going to win without a offensive line! the wrs are in-experienced.ron turner is a joke! devin hester is not a#1 receiver in this leauge! he is too short.he is a gadget man.why did they take the most prolific kickoff returner in nfl history and attempt to make him a receiver? ron turner was hired after a 0-11 season at illinois? gaines adams is a bust!why do they always hire coaches with no head coaching experience.outside of the bullsMichael jordan)in the 90s ,chicago and illini sports are a joke.yes, the sox won a few yrs.ago, that was great.and the bears have 9 championships, however, most of them were in the 30s and 40s! finally, why do all the best athletes, especially from the chicago area,go to universities and collages in other states?(notre dame, michigan, duke, north carolina, memphis)

No way. He's an ego maniac. Never ever would I hire Martz.

There are better choices out there.

No no no no no!!! What about the FAILING Defense whose stats are in the cellar? This could address Offensive issues, but what about the DEFENSE? The numbers and stats speak for themselves. This only addresses part of the problem and doesn't get rid of Lovie and Angelo which is desperately needed.

this won't fly....he'll still be doing what Angelo and Smith enable him to do (with personell, game philosophies, etc...) The "problem" lies, as WE all know, further on up the ladder, specificly where those two are standing, for starters.

Good idea....but not with the poor excuse of a field....the Park District and the Bears need field turf bad....less injuries, and no more concert complaints, and players falling down.
