NFL fines Cutler $20,000 for abusive conduct

By Vaughn McClure

What has been a brutal week for Bears quarterback Jay Cutler got even worse today.

A day after throwing five interceptions in the Bears' 10-6 loss at San Francisco, Cutler was fined $20,000 by the NFL for abusive conduct toward a game official during last Sunday's 41-21 loss to the Cardinals.

Cutler was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct in the third quarter following a pass attempt to Greg Olsen. He argued with an official because he thought Olsen was held on the play.

Defensive tackle Tommie Harris was fined $7,500 for throwing a punch at Cardinals guard Deuce Lutui in the same game. Harris has no plans to appeal the fine.

Player fines collected by the league are used to support retired player programs, including the NFLPA Players Assistance Trust, disaster-relief initiatives and other charities supporting youth, education and sports-related medical research.

Hello, nice post thanks for sharing…. I just joined and I am going to catch up by reading for a while. I hope I can join in soon

People, these fines mean nothing. They are tax deductible to the player. See who gets the money.... it is all classified as donations. Only action by the league that means anything is supensions. Fines are just bad PR and who remembers them after a week, no one.

I am so sick of these so called "officials ! They have taken the true nature out of an American tradition. The regulations are so constricting to the players the it is difficult to do there designated jobs on the field. Football has always been a MANS sport, but it seems that they want to regulate it to touch football. LET THE TESTOSTERONE FLOW DAMN IT !!!

Before I found out Cutler had type 1 diabetes, I thought he just never looked well. His body and mind are a wave of varying emotions and physical changes, and he copes well. I hope he evemtually acheives the goal of doing well inspite of this condition. But like my son, some days are just not good ones.

What's with the "C" on the jerseys in football? In hockey, it serves a purpose. The man with the C (or A for Alternate, NOT assistant) is the only one allowed to speak to a referee. If the C is for show in football, I say take it off. If it means something, let 'em talk. Or yell.

Talk about crybabies.....all the idiots calling on Cutler. Morons. He manned up after the game and told it like it was. Give the guy a break and go back to your jobs. It's not the end of the world.

hahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, are these the cubs?!! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahhahahahahahahahahaha

The use of the word tool is soooooo juvenile. I mean wtf? Fined for what? What are these ref's children? It's football! Not hockey or some other whimpy game.

Jay Cutler was sold as is No warranty, No refund, No exchanges! Thank you for your business!

1) There clearly was holding on the play and the official was looking right at it.

2) He played badly last night, but pass protection was a joke. His mobility and most of his decisions was the only reason he didn't get sacked even once in 52 attempts. 3 of the 5 picks were not his fault. The first one at the goal line wouldn't have happened if Turner hadn't gone with runs for zip up the middle on first and second down. And I'm counting that and the last one as the 2 that were his fault.

3) The guy is still young and immature, but a good athlete and no dummy. Cut him some slack and demand a better O-line and next year may be a good one. The D and O-line are the real issues.

Should have been fined $20,000 for abusing Bear fans.

Thin The Herd on November 13, 2009 4:39 PM

This guy is such an immature loser.

The Broncos pulled of a great coup in foisting his kindergarten mentality off on da Bears.

I think I'll fine Jay Cutler... $1500 for my season tickets!

Cutler must have really said something. The disparity with the punch fine is this: Cutler was challenging the integrity of the officiating, which is ultimately a much larger issue than popping someone after a whistle. The NFL has to back their zebras. Harris' foul wasn't so much vicious as plain stupid.

As for Goose and Philistines who think the refs are out to get the Bears: If the Bears played better and capitalized on their chances, we wouldn't be having this debate. Children blame the officials. Children. The phantom-foul Scottie Pippen issue? Do you know how many free throws the Bulls missed in that game?

Cutler should be fined $50,000 for doing a bad impersonation of a pro QB.

8 seconds was the exact wrong time for there to be left on the clock. Any more, or any less, Cutler wouldn't have rushed it. would have seen that the one db was breaking forward anticipating that Cutler was going to run, and would have thrown it to Olsen's other side. Oh well, the football gods and the NFL are against us this year.

Dante Wesley gets suspended for 1 game with no pay, received no fine from the NFL.

Cutler gets a 20k fine?!?!?!

Dante could have killed the person for the hit he put on the person.

Wonder how much the Ref's make in bribes per week.

Lets face it; the officiating at games really sucks. NFL refs are part time; which is totally wrong. The NFL makes millions of dollars; and cant afford full time refs?
They need to allow a lot more red flags; and challenges for officials penalties as well. Cutler had every right to rip the officials for such a totally BS game they called. Seemed it was very biased against the Bears from the time of the ejection. They should fine refs when they screw things up real bad. Last nights game was bad as well. The head ref seemed like he was clueless; and didnt know which way to point for the call.

Good use of the fine money.

The relative amounts of the fines makes no sense at all. Way to go NFL.

Capt. Obvious on November 13, 2009 3:55 PM

Wow! That's impressive! I'm trying to think of what you could you say to a ref that was almost three times worse in the eyes of the NFL than slugging a player?? "I'll pay you twenty grand if you reverse that BS call, you crooked (*)*&)! )*&)(*)&"??

remember...the bears have no O line and no receivers. hester is a no.1? lol. on one pass, hester fell, on another, there was interference and no call. the two in the red zone were brutal though.

$20,000 for arguing and $7500 for punching someone in the head? Huh??

$7,500 for punching another player and NO league suspension but $20,000 for arguing with an official? Does anyone else see how that is completely perverse! Way to take a stand on Harris' conduct NFL and Bears. This team has less character than the 2009 Cubs.

The Bears should suspend him without pay or just bench him. This guy needs to be taught a lesson.

I thought Jay and Ed Hochuli were buds. True JC fans know this story ...

hahahahahahahaahahahahahaahahahahaha!!!! hey.. i,, just hahahaahahahahaahahahahahahahahahhaahhahahahahahahahaa hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaa

I hate that a good coach like Lovie is going down because of a prima donna cry baby. Can anyone say Jeff George?

Cutler the Stat Whore on November 13, 2009 1:17 PM

Culter is a stat whore. He just wants to be #1 at everything. Yards, TD's, INT's, picks in the Red Zone, poor performances at a press conference, fines. He will take them all!

Patrick Conley Colorado Springs on November 13, 2009 1:15 PM

5? 5! Okay. Now Cutler can cut a contract with Subway. Again thanks for Orton.

Cutler is a tool....
Better than Elway my ass.
