CHAMPAIGN -- After a first half that consisted of three straight missed field goals, Northwestern added the only color to the bleak game with a late second-quarter touchdown to take a 7-3 halftime lead at Memorial Field against Illinois.
Northwestern scored with 17 seconds remaining in the half on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Mike Kafka to Zeke Markshausen.
The Wildcats scored just five plays after linebacker Nate Williams intercepted a pass by Illinois starter Jacob Charest, who went 5 of 14 for 34 yards in the first half.
After Illinois' Matt Eller missed a 23-yard field goal in the first quarter, the Illini got on the board with a 30-yarder by Derek Dimke. The Wildcats missed two field goals from 47 and 50 yards out.
Northwestern safety Brad Phillips left the game with a hip injury. His return is considered questionable.
