Notre Dame GameDay: Irish-Navy first quarter report

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The idea was to hurry up the offense, maximize possessions and not let Navy's befuddling triple-option attack gobble up the clock and set the pace.

The execution of that plan? Well, as they say, Charlie Weis is fully in favor of that at some point Saturday. His Notre Dame team trails 7-0 at the end of one quarter against Navy, botching its first two offensive possessions while failing to demonstrate any ability to halt the Midshipmen's attack.

The Irish's first possession ended with a fumble -- three plays into the game -- which Navy then turned into a 1-yard Ricky Dobbs touchdown, on fourth-and-goal. The Irish then moved into position for a field goal on their next drive... which Nick Tausch sent wide from 41 yards out, for his first miss after 14 straight conversions.

For the record: Navy has 103 yards on 17 rushes already.
