PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Things we know after one quarter of play at Stanford Stadium, with Notre Dame leading Stanford 14-10:

If Bob Stoops is on a plane to South Bend, Ind., on Sunday, it is news to Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick, who said any version of coaching rumors are "simply not true." Irish quarterback Jimmy Clausen indeed has a noticeable black eye stemming from whatever happened at CJ's Pub last weekend.

And a NASA supercomputer might be required to keep up with the scoring of both teams Saturday. One turnover apiece led to one touchdown apiece in the first six minutes.

Stanford then moved the ball well before stalling for a Nate Whitaker field goal, which the Irish then answered with a 78-yard drive to an 18-yard Michael Floyd touchdown reception -- a pretty catch the sophomore made on tip-toes near the sideline.

Meanwhile, Stanford just again moved into Notre Dame territory as the first quarter ended. Buckle up.
