By Brian HamiltonPALO ALTO, Calif. -- Golden Tate is now Notre Dame's all-time leader with 2,626 receiving yards, and no, he did not accrue all of those in the first half Saturday.
But you might be forgiven if you figured as much. The Irish have a 24-20 halftime lead in a race to incinerate the Stanford Stadium scoreboards, as the two sides have combined for 410 yards of offense in the first 30 minutes.
Notre Dame shot itself in the foot en route to a David Ruffer field goal, which followed a fumbled snap. Then the Irish took advantage of a Stanford gaffe on a useless personal foul penalty, with Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate hooking up on a 78-yard touchdown pass that pushed Tate to the career receiving mark.
Then the Irish defense reemerged, giving up plays of 23, 12 and 22 yards on Stanford's last possession of the half, leading to a 1-yard touchdown dive for Owen Marecic with 11 seconds to play before intermission.
