PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Representatives from the Emerald Bowl are in attendance here at Stanford Stadium. But as one Notre Dame beat wag pointed out, this game Saturday may be better than the Irish can do when the postseason rolls around, with no better climates and no better opponents on tap in any lower-tier bowl contest.
The GMAC Bowl, the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, the EagleBank Bowl... all possibilities that are as enticing as they sound for a team that had Bowl Championship Series aspirations when the season began.
The only notable name absent from the Irish's travel roster: freshman kicker Nick Tausch. He is apparently still a bit hobbled and Notre Dame didn't want to chance another injury during warmups.
Ted Thompson, president of the Green Bay Packers, had a seat reserved in the press box. He was joined by representatives for the Oakland Raiders, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos -- all teams that, perhaps not coincidentally, might be in the market for a quarterback next spring.
