SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- If Notre Dame is brutally honest with itself, at no point did it expect an entire season to come to this. To playing a mistake-riddled game against Navy and having everything, including those lofty Bowl Championship Series hopes, in momentous jeopardy late in the fourth quarter.
And by the end, all of those aspirations were vaporized in an unsightly and eminently disconcerting 23-21 loss to the Midshipmen, in which the defense failed to stop much of anything and the offense failed to convert on numerous red-zone opportunities.
Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen completed a career-high 37 passes for 452 yards but also threw an interception and fumbled at the goal-line on a mammoth hit late in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Navy's befuddling triple-option offense accrued 349 yards rushing on the day.

ND will rise to the challenge at Pitt, play thier best and still lose. Pitt may beat them bad. I predict Pitt will rush for many yards.
As someone who lived through and survived the 13 year winless streak against ND I say, "Give chokin' Charlie another 10 years!!!"
Fight On USC
THIS IS BIGGEST LIE stating that
This weasel school has interests in Chicago area..
NO WAY.. NO ONE CARES
Is there any agenda on BCS bowl propaganda on who covers ND?
If
This weasel school wants BCS bowl game even before
Season started?
Charlie Weiss is a great coach, and Notre Dame has great athletes. Ken Niumatalolo is a better coach, and has a better TEAM.
There is not a single player on Navy's roster who would have even received a pro-forma recruiting questionnaire from Notre Dame or any BCS school. As former Navy coach Paul Johnson used to say, Notre Dame has a bunch of Parade All-Americans, and Navy has a bunch of guys who march in dress parades.
But, today in South Bend, the better team won.
Navy is not a lowly college football also-ran. Navy will be going to its seventh straight bowl game, meaning that they win a lot more football games than they lose. Sure, it's a "gimmicky" offense, but the idea is to win football games, and Navy is doing that with pretty good regularity. Navy's losses this year are to Ohio State, Pitt, and Temple -- all of them pretty good football teams.
Poor old Notre Lame. I thought losing to Michigan and USC was bad enough for this overhyped, overrated, and underachieving joke of a team that was supposed to be in the BCS title game according to Lou Holtz. Losing to The Naval Academy for the second straight year is just icing on the cake! Go Midshipmen, Go Trojans, and Go Blue!
Joey - you hit the nail on the head. The better TEAM won.
Once upon a time I went to Notre Dame. Then I flunked out and went into the Navy for 3+ years and then came back. I flunked out again and that was long (40+ years) ago and now I am retired and I watched the game today and then when ND lost to Navy AGAIN I got a call from my sister celebrating Navy's victory and it occurred to me that I too should have been rooting for Navy. After that silly little farce last May ND has forfeited its right to my loyalty and to its right to be called a Catholic college.
Anyone out there remember "Ara stop the snow"?
While this really isn't an upset, it would have been nice to see Weis prepare the team more for Navy's expected running game. Navy walked all over the Irish today.
The only way Notre Dame can win is to wear their green uniforms. Try it and see.
You have no idea how awful I feel. I went to a college that didn't have a football team. The only consolation I have is that I can read.
I am so glad that Notre Dame continues to lose. I'm so sick of those arrogant bastards!
Please, the University is far from being racist. Let's not get into the whole Ty Willingham thing again. I will agree that the football program is a joke as it stands right now, and with multiple degrees of it.
First, Weis comers in and inherits some quality talent and can't win like Ara did early on (Besides a top 20 Michigan team his first season-THIS is his foremost win to-date and probably ever for him).
Next the talent is gone and they really suck playing youth for two years.
Then, they rebuild (He can recruit, but only certain positions-NOT the D-Line, and not top notch RB's and what also seems like a secondary)
And now today, skill positions covered, but no overall COACHING to make all the parts work.
Forget what color the coach is, if this was Devine, Ara, hell, even Holtz- They would all be gone by now for this non-production.
Man if Charlie were black he would of been fired two seasons ago. I believe ND is the only bigot and racist. ND is a joke what is their biggest win Charlie's tenure, an almost win against USC a couple weeks ago. I'm glad ND is failing to win big games or games against somewhat good teams.
This was not an upset.
The guy who wrote about ND being a joke is a tribute to the human race. It is a pleasure to know that classy, articulate guys like him are around to entertain and enlighten us. His family must be proud.
Weis does care- about coaching QB's for the NFL where he is going to go back to. He's good at that, and bad at everything else in the college ranks.
As far as the slander on the Irish Catholics, learn to spell "right" first you hick.
