PHILADELPHIA -- Needing a victory to get the World Series back to Yankee Stadium, the Philadelphia Phillies pounded A.J. Burnett on Monday night in Game 5 at Citizens Bank Park.
A three-run home run by Chase Utley in the first inning and singles by Jayson Werth and Raul Ibanez in the third inning gave the Phillies a 5-1 lead when Joe Girardi lifted Burnett. They raised the mark to 6-1 later in the innng when Werth scored on a fielder's choice by Carlos Ruiz.
Burnett, the American League walk leader during the regular season, gave up four hits and walked four in two-plus innings. He also hit a batter.
Phillies ace Cliff Lee, who beat CC Sabathia in Game 1, was on his game after allowing a run in the first inning. The Yankees took a 1-0 lead on a two-out double by Alex Rodriguez in the first but Lee worked hitless innings in the second and third.
Before the game, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel hinted that Lee, who would be working on only two days' rest, could be in the consideration to pitch a Game 7 if the Phillies force one.
"Who's to say that if Lee pitches tonight and we win, he [won't] pitch again?'' Manuel asked.
