PHILADELPHIA -- Surviving a ninth-inning scare, the Philadelphia Phillies won Game 5 of the World Series 8-6 on Monday night, sending the teams back to New York to settle a champion.
Cliff Lee raised his record in this post-season to 4-0 but could cruise to victory, as it appeared he would when he entered the eighth inning leading 8-2. The Yankees rallied for three runs against him that inning, and then scored another off reliever Ryan Madson in the ninth.
That situation could have been really dire for the Phillies had Derek Jeter not hit into a double play after a leadoff double from Jorge Posada and single by pinch hitter Hidek Matsui. Madson struck out Mark Teixeira, representing the tying run, for the final out.
Chase Utley homered twice for the Phillies. He has five in the Series, tying the record Reggie Jackson set in 1977.
Pedro Martinez is expected to face either Andy Pettitte or Chad Gaudin in Game 6 on Wednesday night. The Yankees lead the series three games to two.
