SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Not that the aching digit on his right foot was ever going to feel perfect any time soon, but at least Jimmy Clausen felt there was progress with his turf toe malady entering last weekend.
Then, Notre Dame's junior quarterback basically fell over himself in the third quarter of a blowout win over Washington State last weekend. Now, once again, he has a toe-jam problem.
"I jammed it on that one play when the guy barely clipped my foot and I tripped over myself, but it feels all right," Clausen said Wednesday. "It's going to linger on for the rest of the season. I'm going to have to deal with it. I'm just tolerating the pain right now.
"To be honest, my toe was feeling really good going into the Washington State game, and after that play it kind of set me back to a few weeks ago where I was hurting and dealing with the pain."
Clausen's general well-being is even more of a priority than usual now that the Irish are down to one scholarship quarterback behind him, with backup Dayne Crist out for the season after suffering a torn ACL against Washington State. Clausen remains the nation's No. 2-rated passer as the Irish prepare to host Navy on Saturday.

Bernie Hamilton must be the most depressed media guy on the planet and certainly hates being on the ND beat. Does he ever have a positive comment on anything ?
Clausen will deal with any pain. His productivity was not impaired since day one of the injury so why now is it a devastating blow to the Irish ?
Get a life Bernard - you Mom does love you despite her concern that you may never grow up and become a sports writer.
