Stoops: Not interviewing for Notre Dame job

The Tulsa World reports: Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops said he is not interviewing for the Notre Dame job that is soon expected to become vacant. Stoops reportedly is a candidate to replace Charlie Weis.

"On the record, I am not (interviewing). First I've heard of this (rumor)," Stoops said in a text message to columnist Dave Sittler.

However, as Sittler points out, Stoops typically doesn't do job interviews, believing his track record at Oklahoma says it all.

This reminds me of something my old geography teacher - Mr Marshall - used to say on those Thursday afternoons

You just found your blog a spot in my favorites

Doesn't Notre Dame have the only exclusive nationwide television contract (NBC)? Didn't NBC extend it last year until 2015? Doesn't Notre Dame have to improve their program in order to justify further extensions? Assuming this fact, isn't their next hire extremely crucial? Hasn't Stoops proven he can resurrect a program? He took Oklahoma off the floor. Why do people consider Oklahoma a better position than Notre Dame? Oklahoma will always be No. 2 in its own division. Texas, also in the Big 12 South, will continually get the quality recruits because the recruiting pool is in that state. Moreover, what program is better positioned in the future for the continual intrusion of television contracts into college football?

I think it's funny that so many are saying that ND football is no longer relevant...yet when you watch ESPN or any other sports programming over the past week, all you hear about is whether or not CW will lose his job and/or who will replace him. Like it or not folks, ND football is still relevant, even though their record over the past decade might suggest otherwise.

Obviously none of you are overcaffeinated. As I (I I I I I) reported earlier, this is a done deal. Stoops is Irish. My NC State source let me know. I love the Internet and I own my own business (but I no longer have a basketball credential). Damn integrity.

If there is coyness in his statement, it's likely to get leverage for future OU contracts. There is no way OU would fire him. Why would he want to take a hornet's nest of a job at Notre Dame???

Ich bin ein von Stoopsy!

How can this be the first he's heard of the rumor when he addressed the same rumor last week?

Kevin O'Keefe on November 29, 2009 1:06 PM

Says he's not interviewing. Doesn't say he's not taking the job. He doesn't have to interview he's done that for 11 years at OU.
