Team USA eyes on Blackhawks' Kane, Byfuglien

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in town to take on the Blackhawks and that means a couple of American-born Hawks will get a chance to strut their stuff in front of the hierarchy of the United States Olympic team.

The head coach of the Leafs, Ron Wilson, also will be at the helm of Team USA for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in February. Toronto general manager Brian Burke is GM of Team USA.

That means Hawks Patrick Kane (Buffalo) and Dustin Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn.) will be able to showcase their talents in front of the men who will help decide who dons the red, white and blue.

Both Kane and Byfuglien said they won't be pressing in hopes of putting a good show.

"Right now I'm worried about the Blackhawks," Kane said. "When that comes, the Olympic team, if I'm fortunate enough to make it, then obviously that would be a fun experience. It will be good to play against them, but I guarantee when I'm on the ice I won't be thinking about that."

Kane figures to be a lock to make the team, while Byfuglien has a chance if Wilson, Burke and the rest of the committee to decide the team want some physicality and size on the roster.

"I haven't heard anything," said Byfuglien, who joined Kane at a summer orientation camp for Team USA. "Right now guys are trying to play their best to make sure they make the team. They told us everyone has an opportunity and it's just a matter of how you're playing at the time."

The roster will be announced during the Winter Classic at Fenway Park on New Year's Day.

One-timers: Tonight is the only meeting this season between these Original Six teams. They have met just once per season since 2002-03. The Hawks have a four-game winning streak against Toronto, with their last loss Feb. 12, 2003 at the UC. ... Cristobal Huet gets his third consecutive start for the Hawks in goal. ... Vesa Toskala will start for the Leafs. He has had a terrible season and sports an 0-2-2 record and 5.13 goals-against average. Toronto is without defenseman Mike Komisarek, who has a quad injury.
