Meyer says he won't be Notre Dame's next coach

In truth, the Urban Meyer-coaching-Notre Dame idea seemed a flight of fancy, if not outright fantasy, given the resources and fertile recruiting ground and national championship trophies he enjoys at Florida. But it seemed at least worth asking about.

Now, Irish athletic director Jack Swarbrick can save his pennies on long-distance calls to Gainesville. In an emotional news conference Monday, Meyer emphatically quashed any speculation that he will be coaching any program other than Florida's for the foreseeable future.

"I will be the head coach at Florida as long as they will have me,'' the former Irish assistant told reporters.

That eliminates one high-profile pipe dream of a candidate should Notre Dame choose to part ways with coach Charlie Weis, who is now 35-26 overall at the school heading into Saturday's season finale at Stanford.

Utah Fan needs to get his facts straight. Meyer was never at Marshall, he was at my alma mater, Bowling Green. He moved on to Utah...no cherry job. Another step on the way to stardom..and that's just fine! Utah Fan would do the same if he had the opportunity. And...Jerk Face...it is "Meyer"...not "Liar". Pull the bundle from your undies and GROW UP!

Utah ND Fan,

Are you that ignorant or just don't have a brain in your head. If someone asked you if you were going to quit your job with your boss listening what would you say? Football is a business that is all. Hope you cheer for the right business. Do not hang your hat on anyting they say. It is not that they are liars, it's the fact that they are the only ones who are continually asked if they will ever quit their job. Fact is, they all leave at some point save Bowden and Paterno. Then you complain, because they didn't leave soon enough.

It's a done deal, it is going to be Nick Saban.

I am a Utah fan and a ND fan, and Urban Liar is one of the best at falsehoods lol. He swore to the AD and people at Marshall he would not leave under any circumstance. Then left for Utah.

At Utah, he rode Alex Smith to stardom, and was asked if he would ever leave. He smiled and said he would stay at Utah through his contract as they had built new facilities at his command and otherwise moved heaven and earth for him. Then he left for Florida.

He has talked about the pressures of constantly winning. Says his wife loves Florida. Denies ever wanting to leave Florida (ala Utah). And now tells everyone he is there for the long haul. The only thing consistent about Urban Liar is he will consistenly deny he is leaving, then leave lol. Don't trust him as far as you can throw him. I personally do not want to see him at ND.

why is this the THIRD press conference Urban Meyer has had to give regarding an inferior job to the NUMBER ONE team in the country, who are going for their third national championship in four years?
seriously? the thought of notre dame returning to a national and perenial contender may sound great to some alumni and misty eyed old drunks, but the reality of that is quite far off. with the imminent departure of charlie, followed by the exodus of blue chip players to the nfl, (and how are they recruiting now with a lame duck coach?), it really is going to have to be blown up and started over.
I think it would be a great challenge to someone like Meyer to try and accomplish relevance at ND, but really, people just don't care about ND as much as they used to. I know the tv contract is there, but with cable and satellite packages, more people are watching better teams because now they have a choice, unlike the nbc forced down our throat ND of the 80's. I'm not saying no one cares, but a lot less then the press around here would seem to indicate.
but leave urban meyer alone, he has some real work to do. the only unranked team he should be worried about is FSU....

If ND wave enough cash they can get a top tier coach who can actually recruit and then, unlike Charlie Weiss, deliver on his promises to those recruits

Urban Meyer was sought by Notre Dame prior to going to Florida. He knows that Notre Dame has academic admission standards incomparable to the other programs he was coach of or was considering to coach. Supposedly ND's administration would not give him the unrestricted number of scholarships he wanted but when Florida came into the picture for him, there was probably little doubt he would sign with Florida.
Coach Meyer wanted to win a national championship and this happened for him at Florida. He knew the talent pool was there and would be there forever as long as athletic academic standards remained at a lower level. If Coach Meyer would ever leave Florida for Notre Dame, it would be for reasons other than establishing a legacy in the Southeast Conference or nationally. Hopefully, he has made a contribution toward the young men he coaches beyond the national championships.

That's fine by me. Brian Kelly is THE MAN for the job, just like Lou Holtz was following Gerry Faust. Just like Holtz, Kelly has turned programs around and built them to sustain without him, everywhere he's been. He took a little school in Michigan to two NCAA II national championships. He then went to Central Michigan and turned a program around that hadn't had a winning season in seven years in one season. And in just three years, he built a program to last that is performing at the highest level in history. Now after almost three seasons at the University of Cincinnati, he has won the Orange Bowl, been named Big East Coach of the year 2X, has UC at 10-0 for the first time in history and is rated #5 in the country.

Brian Kelly has more head coaching experience (19 years), and more victories (155-54-1), than Davie, Willingham, and Weis combined.

Unlike CW, Brian Kelly knows how to develop and motivate young college athletes. Unlike CW, Brian Kelly is great at reaching out to the fans and the community.

Beside, his name is Kelly for crying out loud!

The Irish need Brian Kelly NOW!

If Meyer left Florida to coach Notre Dame it would be the worst move ever by a coach, its like coaching the Yankees and wanting to coach a girls high school team, wy would anyone even want to bring it up, its way out of line and if Meyer did it I hope my Fighting Irish lost every game if they think they can think an ounce that Meyer would ever come to coach here, I am a huge fan of Notre Dame, but come on we stink and need to change something.

In other news, Nick Saban *swears* he's staying in the NFL.

Seriously, why anyone puts any stock in anything these guys say until the season is over is beyond me. They will happily lie through their teeth (tearfully, even!) right up until any rumor is confirmed. This isn't a knock against them, confidential negotiations are confidential for a reason. But the indefatigable will of reporters to relay their denials as immutable facts continues to be a source of hilarious-in-hindsight headlines.

Do I think Meyer will be the next coach of Notre Dame? No, but not because he says he's staying with Florida. He can deny it all day until the sun sets but until an announcement is made (or leaked), nobody will know for sure who is or is not going to be the next coach.

Yeah , Notre Dame make a decision - let's hire another coach that maybe will take them to the national championship game - that understands football - coaches from the heart and not out of the wallet - until then - football at Notre Dame will always be just another commerical venture that only NBC can love and embrace on weekly schedule.

Ok seriously, what do you expect him to say. His team has a huge game against Alabama and possibly a national championship. Do you really expect him to come out and say," Well folks, Im waiting until the end of the season to go to Notre Dame, but until then, I will focus on Florida." No way. This means nothing to me. We will just have to wait and see how this plays out. Until either Notre Dame makes an announcement I wouldnt believe anything.
