Pompei: Titans' Young should give Cutler hope

Vince Young's great four-game stretch and revival should give Jay Cutler hope.

Many had written off the Titans quarterback, who had been benched last year in favor of Kerry Collins. But Young looks like he has come into his own in his fourth season.

Young and Cutler came into the league the same year. Both remain young, developing quarterbacks. And that point gets lost with Cutler.

Developing quarterbacks are going to make mistakes. They are going to be inconsistent, especially when things around them aren't going well.

What has happened with Cutler has surprised all of us. But if we knew the pass protection would have been off and the running game terrible, maybe we wouldn't have been surprised.

But nobody should give up on Cutler yet.  Vince Young has proven that.

Relax everybody...

I lived in San Diego when a young qb named Dan Fouts threw a ton of pics and everybody wanted him benched.

I lived in Milwukee when a young qb named Brett Favre threw a ton of pics and everybody wanted him benched.

I see the same kind of player in Cutler. He needs QUALITY coaching but I truly believe he'll be really good.

Most qb's do better as they get older - is this not Brett Favre's best season?

"Look at how Jeremy Bates and Shanahan used Jay. They know Jay's Strengths!
Denver had the second ranked offense last year!"

Obviously no one watched Jay do exactly what he is doing now in Chicago in Denver over the last 2 full seasons.
Number 2 in yards but 16th in scoring. A red zone disaster under Shanahan and Bates despite having Marshall, Royal, Stokley, and decent receiving tight ends with a good O-line.

Jay Cutler put up tons of yards until he hit the red zone and sputtered to a halt which resulted in turnovers or FG attempts when the team needed 7 to stay in a game.

Getting a new O-Coordinator isn't going to fix a guy that does very little to demonstrate any sense of leadership. Leaders find ways to win games even when they are working with less talented or injury depleted teams. Jay isn't that guy.

Whats Cutler's winning percentage again? Oh thats right he hasnt had a winning season at any level. Compared to VY who has been a winner at every level. Cutler gets drafted onto a winning team and yet is unable to take them to the playoffs. VY goes to a losing team and goes 8-5 as a starter rookie year and 2nd year their in the playoffs.

It is amazing to see so many excuses for Cutler. The Bears don't have an o-line, receiver's, offensive coordiantor etc. If we apply that logic universally wouldnt every QB be great? Thats part of the game. You deal with the cards you are given. What that tells me is Cutler doesn't make his teammates better. VY on the other hand has proven that he can take a team that was 3-13 one year and turn them around the next. VY has now won 8 straight games as a starter. He has 5th highest winning percentage of active QB's.

One thing I noticed about Cutler is that he throws off his backfoot often.

I am a man of faith and I know Lovie is too! I like Lovie for that reason.

BUT why does Lovie not change his Offense?

I watched the Colts beat the Bears in the Super Bowl.

Good coaches "Adjust" I saw no adjustment against the Colts, just the same old plays.

Fast Forward 2009, the Bears are not adjusting, why??

The Titans know Vince is good at Dink and Dunk Throws and running. They have adjusted their playbook for him.

Why don't the Bears??

Here is what I don't understand.

1st Play - Run, 1 yard gain.

2nd Play - Run, 1 yard gain.

3rd and 8 - Pass, BUT, you only have two seconds to get rid of the ball or you will be sacked.

Snap 1 and 2 ball better be gone!

You have a Ferrari QB playing in a Pinto Offense!

Look at how Jeremy Bates and Shanahan used Jay. They know Jay's Strengths!

Denver had the second ranked offense last year!

The way I look at it. The more we lose the more they will bring in some weapons and change their offense philosophy!

Seeing how well Favre is playing this year, perhaps the Bears should give Dan Marino a call.

it seems to me that the offensive coordinator is a HUGE problem here. rather than trying to fit the "franchise QB" into your system, he should be building the system around the strengths of the "franchise QB". it seems clear that Cutler is more comfortable on the move, rolling out. so... hello turner, roll him out then. he just seems stubborn.
