A New York Yankees official downplayed the suggestion that the team had a serious interest in White Sox free-agent slugger Jermaine Dye, according to Tuesday's editions of the New York Post.
Meanwhile, general manager Brian Cashman told the Post that the Yankees won't spend as much money as they did last season in landing free agents CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte and Mark Teixeira.
Cashman added that he hadn't talked to free agents or even received firm budget numbers for 2010.
The Yankees, however, will need to address their outfield and designated hitter positions with Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui already filed for free agency and prospect Austin Jackson a candidate for a major league promotion.
Although Dye has stated he doesn't want to perform full-time DH duties, he would be willing to play in the Northeast. And if Cashman needs a firm scouting report on Dye, he merely has to call one of his better friends in the business - Sox GM Ken Williams.
Atlanta and San Francisco are among the teams looking for outfield help, and Dye could be a fit there.

Thank you very much for that incredibly astounding editorial!
Jeff. the "Nada Surf" posts from 11/24 at 11:01 and 12:11 were not me, the real Nada...
This stupid site allows anyone to use anyone's name, even though you have to enter an email address.
Sorry Dave V. what did you say? I couldn't understand it, either because it makes absolutely no sense, or I cannot read 'idiotese'.. take your pick..
I may have jumped the gun and presumed that the guy making what appear to be homophobic remarks about the Sox clubhouse was a Cubs fan, I guess he could just be a fool.
Unless you are also endorsing the questionable comments left by someone else earlier in regards to the Sox Clubhouse in which case someone with opinions like yours really do not matter.
But, otherwise, what you said makes absolutely NO sense.
Oh and have a nice day.
I just don't see Dye fulfilling any needs that the Yankees have, which are either a decent left fielder or a (presumably left-handed) DH. The most they could offer him (considering his age and loss of skills in both the field and at the plate) would be a pinch-hitting role. Their younger spare outfielders are better in the field and on the basepaths, so I don't see him getting much playing time in those capacities. I don't think Brian Cashman suddenly became a fool. Jermaine needs to come to terms with his declining skills. He's not a starting corner outfielder anymore, at least not for a pennant contender.
Oh...
And by the way...
The day some other teas signs Jermaine Dye, the Sox will have gotten a lot better.
I don't know why they allow multiple names on here, but when you see "Nada Surf" as a Cubs fan you know something is seriously wrong.
I guess anyone can be anyone else on this "Chicago Breaking News" section.
Geez, I guess I could be Northside Neumann if I wanted.
10% of Cub fans know something about baseball but they are bitter because they have to pay to watch the stinking pitchers bat in the minor league sewer they call Wrigley field.
The other 90% of the cub fans are drunks from boyz town!
God Bless Bartman, he wasn't on steroids like slimy Sammie and many of his other team mates!!!!!!
When do you think the cubbies well get any real outfielders that can play major league baseball. Hendry is a bigger joke than Lou! When these two clowns are gone maybe the cubs will make some progress.
The Sox had a bad year the cubs are on their second bad CENTURY!
Nada Surf? that is funny. Real baseball on the north side? what kind of baseball is that? When is the last time the flubs won the World Series? Get real.
Another guy out here pretending to be me. I may be a bigger star than Oprah or President Obama!!

I like how it appears that Cubs fans on the message boards are nothing more that resentful homophobes who have anger management issues..
Look fools, for a bunch of whiny self-absorbed losers who hate the White Sox you sure spend a LOT of time on the Sox boards.... (closet case White Sox fans)
Also, the Cubs don't need Dye, they are already have him in SORIANO.. Guess you buffoons need to check you own team before bashing other teams...
Dye couldn't play for the Cubs, they play REAL BASEBALL on the north side, no sissy DH nonsense. So OLD MAN DYE can either stay with the AL wuss league or retire. No one cares.
CUBS ALL DAY
