NEW YORK -- Hideki Matsui was known as Godzilla when he played in Japan. He was a monster for the New York Yankees in Game 6 of the World Series.
Matsui's second-inning home run and third-inning single, both off Pedro Martinez, put the Yankees ahead of the Phillies 4-1 through four innings on Wednesday night. Alex Rodriguez was on first base when Matsui homered. The bases were loaded when he delivered a line shot to left-center, scoring Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel had lefty J.A. Happ warming up in the bullpen when Matsui came to bat in the third inning. He left Martinez in even though Matsui had gone 3-for-3, with two homers and a walk, off him in his two starts in this World Series.
Matsui made him pay.
The Phillies got their run in the third inning on a Carlos Ruiz triple and Jimmy Rollins sacrifice fly.
A victory by the Yankees clinches the 27th World Series championship in their history. That's what manager Joe Girardi had in mind when he selected 27 as his uniform number.
