Having waved goodbye to Jason Bay, Boston is closing in on a two-year deal for free agent outfielder Mike Cameron, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.
The Cubs were talking to Cameron about a centerfield opening, but Marlon Byrd is also on their radar, and is a favorite of hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo.
With the dwindling number of talented centerfielders, the Cubs may have to turn up their efforts to sign Byrd. They haven't made a move while trying to find a landing spot for Milton Bradley, and if Byrd signs elsewhere, their only remaining targets are Rick Ankiel and Scott Podsednik.

AGAIN, we have to ask, where's Hendry? At one point do you get a clue and realize you'll have to eat the Bradley money? While you sit and dreamily hope someone's going to come by on a white horse and actually give you something for him, the best players are moved. We'll be left bidding against ourselves -- again -- for the last two ugly girls at the dance. And then we'll give 'em a no-trade clause. Pathetic.
