Staff report
After a holiday break, the Cubs are back in the hunt for a leadoff hitter/center fielder, with free agents Marlon Byrd and former White Sox Scott Podsednik on their radar.
But they also are looking to add one more pitcher to the bullpen and perhaps will invite several pitchers to spring camp to see if one can stick. ESPN.com reports they might be interested in former Sox pitcher Jose Contreras as a long man, although that would be unlikely with the acquisition of Carlos Silva from Seattle. He basically fills the same role of long relief/possible starter. Plus, Contreras should get better offers from other teams looking for a starter.
As for the outfielder, the site reports the Cubs have inquired about the Rockies' Ryan Spillborghs, who can play all three positions, although that role also could be filled by bringing back popular Reed Johnson.

The way some of these guys butcher names they remind me of Harry Carey.My favorite was the way Harry would butcher Ryne Sandberg especially when Scott Sanderson and Jim Sundberg were on the team.Who could forget "Ryne Sanderson" or "Sandy Ryneberg"?? One time a ways back a guy came up to me at work and said the Cubs just traded for Paul Assenmacher and then said can you imagine what Harry is going to do with that name??
Yea all the idiotic hendry bashers seem to forgot he built and created the 97-65 team in 2008.He "destroyed" the same team he made every acqusition on.They cry all the time about derosa being traded when hendry signed him in the 1st place when he was a no Name utility FA.While I disagreed with the milton bradley signing and it turned out to be a huge mistake for hendry the majority of his moves have been great.Cubs fans aren't to bright they think sam fuld should be starting and leading off even tho he's 29 year old career minor leaguer and cant hit for nothing.Let hendry fix his mistakes (That lou piniella suggested).
Hendry is unable "to build an MLB-level run-producing outfield that goes three across". First off, what does that even mean? Second, 2008: Soriano, Edmonds & Johnson, Fukudome. They all did a good job that season at producing runs at "an MLB-Level" what ever that even means. None of them are 40-120 guys, but how many teams have three of those? I know Hendry-bashers have bad memories, but I didn't think they were so bad that they couldn't remember stuff that happened a year ago.
YAWNS.
Yawns. Podesednik?? Marlon byrd? YAWNS. They are the guys that will definitely get the cubs to the playoffs and the World Series.
Who's Redd Johnson????? Why can't we just resign Reed Johnson.
How is this breaking news? ....Breaking News....Cubs continue to try to find players. WOW, earth-shattering.
Evidently the ability to spell is not a requirement for this job. If a proofreader is needed, I have an 11 year old daughter but she may be over qualified...
Where is the proofing on articles these days?
@sirbarry: well played.
I love Redd Johnson!
Podsednik? Please. The reason the Cubs are "scouring the market" for leftovers is because they badly missed out on all the top players changing teams...Cameron, Cabrera, etc. Now we're going to get the scraps AGAIN, a la Burnitz, Jockstrap Jones, the light-hitting Fukodome, etc. Hendry has proven unable, year after year, to build an MLB-level run-producing outfield that goes three across. It's like at least one outfield position every year is an afterthought to him. Unbelievable He's gotta go.
How does this article make it online? Joe Contreras???? But I have to admit that I'll miss Redd Johnson's heroics at Wrigley if he doesn't return.
