Shani Davis skated the third-fastest time ever -- and fastest anywhere but Salt Lake City, the world's fastest rink -- to win the 1,000 meters at the speedskating World Cup today in Calgary.
Chicago's Davis clocked 1 minute, 6.91 seconds, not far from the world record (1:06.42) he set in Salt Lake last March. Trevor Marsicano of the U.S. recorded the second fastest 1,000, 1:06.88, the same day in Salt Lake.
The previous Calgary Olympic Oval track record, 1:07.07, was set by Beorn Nijenhuis of Holland in March, 2008.
Davis is unbeaten in three World Cuo 1000s this season. Marsicano
was 7th (1:08.06) in Sunday's race. He has set track records in two of
the three.
Davis chose not to skate team pursuit, and his absence was telling.
The U.S. team of Marsicano, Chad Hedrick and Glenview's Brian Hansen finished 7th Sunday, 4.93 seconds behind the Dutch.
In
the first World Cup team pursuit of the season at Heerenveen, the
Netherlands last month, the trio of Davis, Hedrick and Marsicano had
tied the Dutch for first.
