The first recruiting casualty of the Brian Kelly era at Notre Dame reportedly is cornerback Toney Hurd, Jr., who rescinded his oral commitment to play for the Irish, according to various reports on Rivals.com sites.
Irish Illustrated reports that Hurd told its partner site for Texas A&M sports that he is no longer committed to the Irish. Hurd is no longer listed as a Notre Dame commitment in the network's database.
The three-star prospect from Missouri City, Texas, told the South Bend Tribune earlier Thursday that he hadn't changed his mind, though both outlets reported that Kelly had not contacted Hurd since taking the Notre Dame job.
The 5-foot-9-inch, 184-pound Hurd is listed as the No. 48 cornerback nationally by Rivals.

Ron Foul-up was Jimmy Clawson of the 1990s, #1 recruit, all the promise in the world, posted great #s but wasn't a leader, and ND suffered for it. When I heard that Foul-up was hired by Weis, I had a fear that he would teach Jimmy to follow in his footsteps. He did. Great numbers, a few close games won, but also too many lost. Dayne Crist looks to me like a leader, and I for one am glad that Foul-up won't have a chance to ruin him, too.
Brian - Jon Tenucci? Are you serious? It's a joke right? How can you be commenting on Kelly's actions when you're COMBINING THE NAMES OF TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE in you comment? Jon Tenuta was our horrible, horrible DC. No one in the world would keep him. Frank Verducci was a good OL coach, and I liked him, but he taught a pro-style zone. I don't know that Kelly uses the same scheme, and even if he does I'm sure he has a guy ready to take that spot.
I agree that losing Bryant Young stinks, but nowhere has it been publicized that he was fired/let go. He could've chosen to leave, for all we know.
The ND assts were in every recruits home last week. If they bail in the first 4 days of a new coach being hired, and don't give him a chance to hire a staff and get on the road, they weren't really strong on ND anyway. They can give the guy 10 days. I agree he should reach out, but since the Assts did less than 8 days ago, it's not unfair to give him til next week before jumping ship.
Why should the new coach keep anybody from Charlies era? They along with Charlie proved they could not motivate the kids to play at the elite level week in and week out. I would definitley not keep anybody related to the Defense side of the ball what a waste. We can all sit back and say this and that bottom line lets just see where Coach Kelly can lead us.
Commenters should be required to take a test before being allowed to spout drivel. Thus far, BK has 'lost' one recruit - Hurd. Martin left before Kelly was hired. Louis Nix came on before Kelly was hired. If you blame Kelly for Martin, you have to give him credit for Nix, so it's a wash (never mind that it makes no sense though - logic is overrated, right?). And Hurd isn't necessarily gone. Kelly has been on the job not even a week. He hasn't had a chance to get out to visit recruits. Hurd could easily be back in the fold once that happens.
I am dissapointed in Coach Kelly only keeping Tony Alford. I was upset when Ron Powlus dissed Lou but after meeting him I feel he is a super ND man. Who knows better all the pitfalls that a prized QB recruit will go through. His failure in the NFL wasn't due to a poor work ethic or knowledge and understanding of the game. His arm was shot. I watched Eagle workouts and the arm was no longer there. Remember he incurred three serious injuries in his ND career, two in his first year. He was never the same. Lou was going to start him his original freshman year until the sever collarbone injury. That means he was ahead of Kevin McDougall who had a great year and led the Irish into a major bowl.
How about Bryant Young, Randy Hart, John Tenucci, Brian Polian--these are four more guys that Coach Kelly should seriously consider retaining. I heard him them talk, their fire and enthusiasm is contagious. He needs ND continuity and especially letting Young and Powlus go is a huge mistake.
I am so tired of these five year intervals. If he makes these kind of mistakes we'll be looking at Urban in 2015 again. Swarbrick should step in and put some controls on this staff.
I liked Charlie, both as a coach and a person. His big failing was inability to make kids achieve up to and beyond their potential. Some say it is failure to motivate and that is probably the most succinct description. If he could have fired up that defense he would be still there. Kelly trying to do it his way will fail just like Charlie and Ty and Davie doing it their way. Charlie did understand ND; I hope and pray Coach Kelly will get it. ND is unlike any other school and the passion and love that so many of us have for Our Lady's school cannot be explained it can only be felt.

Im not liking these "changes" so far. He lets all our best recruiters walk, save Alford, doesnt keep Bryant Young as an assistant, and now he isnt even giving committs the courtesy to call and say "we dont need you now"..just ignores them? The coach of ND should have more class than that.
This is the first decommit for Kelly. Martin decommitted after Weis was fired and before Kelly was hired.
He also decommitted before last week. Get your facts straight.
This wasn't the first de-commit for the Irish and Brian Kelly. 5-star DE recruit Chris Martin changed his mind last week and gave a verbal to Cal.
