Andre Dawson to enter Hall of Fame as an Expo

Andre Dawson will be going into the Baseball Hall of Fame as a member of the Montreal Expos, the Tribune has learned.

Dawson, who played the first 11 seasons of his major league career with the Expos, signed a blank contract to play with the Cubs in 1987 and promptly won the National League Most Valuable Player Award after hitting 49 home runs.

After attending the annual B.A.T. banquet in New York Tuesday night, Dawson sent the following text to The Tribune:

"Hall will issue a press release (Wednesday) announcing that I will go in as an Expo."

Dawson was the only player selected for the Hall of Fame in 2010 by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Dawson famously signed a blank free-agent contract with the Cubs during spring training of 1987. Cubs general manager Dallas Green filled in the contract with a modest $500,000 figure for the 1977 NL Rookie of the Year.

Dawson later told me: "If I had to do it all over again, I probably would do it the same way. It was just a matter, for me, of going somewhere that I knew I would enjoy the game and be a little more respected from a management standpoint. I couldn't have picked a better place. I always loved daytime baseball and I always enjoyed playing in Wrigley Field."

Dawson had made it clear earlier this month to the Tribune that he preferred going into the Hall of Fame on July 25 in Cooperstown, N.Y., as a Cub.

"I will probably have a preference, but again I will respect their decision," he said then. "I feel that (the decision) is probably going to be based on the history of the game.  (The Hall of Fame officials) made it obvious when they sent the letters out to us before the announcement...and I respect that."

Dawson will join catcher Gary Carter as the only members wearing Expos hats on their plaques.

I am very picky about shoes and sometimes I think it seems that there are few shoes fit right or be comfortable. Until one day, I got to know MBT shoes on a certain website. I looked through the MBT shoes! I thought I could never afford to buy these MBT shoes, but there are MBT shoes on clearance now! These shoes provide me with such wonderful support and comfort. They are Discount MBT shoes online well made and the engineering is truly amazing. They really have great temptation, and I finally decided to buy a pair. Highly recommend!

For women who love a beautiful high heels, the christian Louboutinhelped stilettos back into fashion in the world.
Jimmy Choo shoesis one of the a lot of admired shoe designers in the apple of artist fashion.

Dallas Green and his measly 500K didn't buy a cap in the HOF. That cheap-a$$ lowball decision was bad karma and this is the payback.

I want to make a sandwich of my 2 favorite juicers, Sammy Sosa and Andre Dawson. I'll provide the baloney. Yum!

I lived in Montreal for almost 20 years and i understand why Andre Dawson is so dissapointed. Why he should wear an Expo's cap??? The team doesn't live anymore, the team is dead for 4-5 years now and it's obvious that most of the people in Mtl (especially the young people)doesn't care about the "HAWK"...

I'm sorry for all of you dear Cubs fans!!!

In Mtl...it's all about hockey and the Habs ;o)

Eric!!!

He might as well go in as an Expo. The fans in Montreal have nothing now except for their memories.

Ahem, Warren, the article clearly states that Dawson preferred to go into the HOF as a CUB, not as an Expo. Do you read before you post?

Calling some Sox fans...please stop bashing the Cubs and Andre Dawson. This story has NOTHING to do with the Sox, so why even bring them up? Some of the posts on this board are vehemently anti-Cub, and I strongly suspect those posts are coming from fellow Sox fans. I'm personally a huge Sox fan, but I'm embarrassed to see the rivalry make its way into this discussion.

As for Dawson, I think it makes sense that he would selected to wear an Expo's hat, but I still liked him when he was with the Cubs.

Just a small redemption for a city that has become pityfull sportswise. Media here will talk about something else than the Canadiens...for 15 minutes...hey, you guys have all the major sports, and even 2 baseball teams...so leave us Andre, ok?

What else would you expect from BBWA. MLB tried to prop up Montreal for years, to the extent of MLB running the team. A city that just plain didn't want Major League Baseball. The franchise didn't want the stupid nickname," Expos" either. The city doesn't even want to be part of Canada!

Yes, Andre spent more years in the exile called Montreal
but nobody knew who he was until he came to a baseball city. More people saw him play in Chicago in 3 Years than saw him play in Canada in 10 years. In the future BBWA will be able to say Montreal has 2 players in the HOF and kids will say...Montreal had a team? Just like the STL Browns or the Pilots, MLB Franchise FAILURES. Lets shame these poor players, doomed forever to being connected to FAILED Franchises.

This is the BBWA's Hall of Fame, they own it, they make the rules! They are the supreme ones. The only people on the face of the earth capable enough to make a judgment as to who gets in OUR Hall of Fame. You have former baseball writers across the country writing food columns, eligible to vote for ball players they have never seen play, they don't care. At the minimum....broadcasters should be included. People who are qualified and knowledgeable should be voting: Bob Costas, Vin Scully, Ernie Harwell, Pat Hughes, John Rooney much less those who have passed and never ever had a chance to vote Brickhouse, Carey, Jack Buck and Bob Elson, but no, we rely on food critics & gossip columnists who qualify to vote.

This is not a True baseball Hall of Fame.

Maybe I should start of the old-timers commitee.........If RON SANTO doesn't get in ...... this whole HOF thing is total BS. It really isn't worth talking about. Sorry I wasted your time.

While you dopes have been doing ribbon dances, giggling and wetting yourselves over your little Andre, he doesn't even consider himself a Flub! He chose to be Identified with a team that doesn't even exist rather than the...
"Greatest Team Ever In The History of Baseball"!

Look at poor Timmys remarks...He heart broken! Poor little guy! Stomp you feet Timmy and hold you breath that'll make It better!

Martin Cruz on January 27, 2010 10:38 AM

FYI Hall of Fame players no longer have the option of choosing a team. After the Wade Boggs (Tampa Bay?!) and Dave Winfield (the highest $$$) fiascos, the decision now belongs solely to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown

It would have been nice to see him in a Cubs hat, but he had a lot of great years in Montreal. This also gives the hall a chance to acknowledge a franchise that isn't very well represented in the Hall considering some of the players that went through there.

Now that Dawson is in it may be quite some time before there is another Cub in the Hall. Maddux will be a first ballot HOF guy, but he'll definitely go in as a Brave.

I always thought it was the player's choice. Not really sure why it would not be. Heck, they're the ones who played and earned it.

Le Grand Orange on January 27, 2010 10:29 AM

After Tim Raines, Andre Dawson was the best Expo ever. This decision was a no-brainer to everyone except delusional Cub fans, the same who think Greg Maddux should go in as a Cub. Pitiful.
