The bubble burst Tuesday for Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner, who was dismissed. (Chris Sweda/Tribune)
By Vaughn McClure
The Bears said Tuesday they have dismissed offensive coordinator Ron Turner, as well as offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton, tight ends coach Rob Boras, offensive assistant/assistant offensive line coach Luke Butkus and offensive assistant/assistant wide receivers coach Charles London.
Sources differ on the status of defensive line coach Rod Marinelli. While one league source expected Marinelli to become defensive coordinator -- and he is believed to have discussed the post with head coach Lovie Smith on Monday -- it appears the Bears will look elsewhere to fill the position.
The Bears retained receivers coach Darryl Drake and running backs coach Tim Spencer. Drake's receivers were the most criticized group coming into the 2009 season, but performed much better than expected. Spencer had to deal with Matt Forte running on a bad knee and inconsistent play from the offensive line.
Turner's dismissal was expected in light of the team's offensive
struggles during a 7-9 season. He still will be regarded as one of the
most productive offensive coordinators in the team's history after
helping the Bears reach Super Bowl XLI. But Turner's fifth consecutive
year as the team's offensive coordinator (and ninth total) went south
despite the addition of quarterback Jay Cutler.
Turner was one of the first assistants the team met with Tuesday morning. Turner's offense finished 23rd in the NFL (310.3 yards per game) and 29th in rushing offense (93.3 yards per game) this season. During the Super Bowl season, the Bears were tied for 15th in yards per game (324.9) and tied for second with 26.7 points per game.
The cold relationship between Turner and Cutler did not help Turner's situation
Hiestand, who declined to comment about his dismissal, figured to be gone if Turner was no longer in the mix. The offensive line didn't make much improvement from last season despite the additions of Orlando Pace, Frank Omiyale, and Kevin Shaffer, although Omiyale, Shaffer, and Chris Williams showed progress at the end of the season.
ESPNChicago.com first reported the news about Boras being fired.
Meanwhile, Joe Cullen, Marinell's defensive line coach when Marinelli was the head coach of the Detroit Lions, was spotted at Halas Hall last week and could take over the Bears' defensive line if Marinelli is promoted to coordinator.
In 2006, the Lions suspended Cullen after he was arrested twice, once on a drunk-driving charge and the other on a charge of driving naked through a fast-food drive-through lane.

Ron Turner is taking the fall for a poorly managed team. He is a quality guy with values and great coaching skills and execution. Because Cutler is a baby Turner has to suffer the consequences for his mamby pamby personality. I know he will be picked up by a better team making the Bears' organization wonder what they heck they were thinking...or drinking.
My take is this. Yeah, it's cool that Ron Turner got fired but more should've been done! Why??? There was as great a free agent crop of Superbowl winning headcoaches as I've ever seen. Mike Shannahan developed Cutler so didn't we bid for him vs. the Redskins. Bill Cowher, yeah we don't have the personnal to switch to the 3-4 yet, but the players would've been motivated and ready to play. That's something that couldn't be said week to week under Lovie. Heck, Jon Gruden won the Superbowl with a Cover-2 defense and had fire. Too many good coaches available to just ignore them!
"The defense was great when Ron Rivera was the coordinator."
Correction. The defense was great when Mike Brown, Tommie Harris and Brian Urlacher were all healthy at the same time. Rivera's great defense was markedly worse when Harris and Brown went down in '06. Similar to Mike Ditka. Good players, good coach. Bad players, bad coach.
Another great Bears myth debunked.
sweet34a - you are so right!
This is a good move guys. Can anyone honestly say that the play calling and non-utilization of Cutler's skills worked this year? All of us sitting at home watching the game were well aware of how uncomfortable Cutler has looked all year being contained in the pocket. Just look at the last 2 games when he was allowed to move. That's what we got him for and it took all season for Turner to figure it out?
Nothing personal to Turner, he is probably a nice guy, but it just wasn't working. Like him or not, Cutler is a smart guy who knows how to play...so let him play!
Response to ODD... You are 100% right. The Management is cheap and the coaches are incompetent.
The main reason they didn't fire Lovie Smith is because management won't pay for the two years left on his contract. They fired Ron Turner, which is a good thing, now they should fire the defensive coordinator, not just re-assign him back to head coach. The defense was great when Ron Rivera was the coordinator.
Players... They are either too cheap or they don't know how to evaluate talent. I suspect it's both.

Marinelli as DC; I think I need to go to the bathroom. Something in my stomach wants to get out. That should absolutely, positively insure Lovie's firing next year. The sooner Lovie is out of here, the better off the Bears are. He is not the future of this organiztion; Cutler is, providing they get the right QB coach. There has to be an OC out there who can get this team back where it needs to be, and one who can step up and take over the Head Coach job next year at this time.
One of the local columnists wrote a piece on Mike Heimerdinger with the Tennessee Titans a couple of weeks ago. Lots of pluses for him with a good track record developing QBs such as McNair and Young. There's a possibility he could come cheap as in less than $2MM which would appeal to the McCaskeys.
Thanks Santa for making my Christmas wish come true!!! Now, please, please, please, please FIRE JERRY ANGELO!!!
Not firing Angelo and Smith set us back at least another 2 years. Especially since there was a perfect coach available in Shanahan. We have invested a LOT in Cutler and we needed to bring in a coach that would get the most out of him!! It was an easy decision to fire Angelo and Smith based on their track record but they were not fired because of the money owed them. End of story!!
There is a GOD! No more TURDNER!
I've been hearing Bears fans call for Ron Turner's head for years. They finally hire him and I don't see a single positive comment. Go figure. Bears fans won't be happy no matter what, so why should the organization bother to try to make them happy?
As for myself: Whoohoo! Turner's gone! It's not the housecleaning it should be, but it should mean a better team next year! Go Bears!
So, just to recap, in another five years we'll be celebrating the Bears 1985 superbowl win, it will be 30 years since the bears last won a superbowl, the ownership is cheap, the coaches they get are incompetent, and the talent they surround the Franchise QB with is a joke, here's to you the fans that will be celebrating the 30th aniversity of the bears last superbowl win, loosers.
Why arent the defensive coaches FIRED? Mainly defensive coach LOVIE WE ARE A 7-9 TEAM SMITH. This was the worse bears defense I've ever seen. In some games they could of lost by 60 or 70 points if it werent for the other team feeling sorry for us. BEARS ARE JUST IN SAVE MONEY MODE RIGHT. GUESS WHAT? Ill SAVE SOME MONEY BY NOT ATTENDING YOUR GAMES TOO.

Best offseason move the bears have ever done!!!
Big Tuna Weis is available, if you act fast. Or even if you act half-fast.
I'm still upset that the Bears kept this FuckTard this long but with that said, best headline I've seen in a while. "Bears fire offensive coordinator Ron Turner" Let the door hit you on the way out!!!
No Defensive Coaches? That was the worst Bears Defense I have seen in a long time, maybe ever!
If Cullen does officially get signed and goes for another Double Stack, Big Mac, BK Kids Meal or whatever nude, please take the Staley bear costume just in case.
There is a GOD!!! I've hated this incompetent turd since the super bowl year. GOOD RIDDANCE!!!
Finally! The Bears got it right. When the color commentator this past Sunday said the Bears finally opened the play book against the Vikings, I wonder where Turner found the play book? Does it take a sport commentator to finally shine a light on the issue?
Jerry Angelo, fire yourself as well.
Let's get something straight! It was the first time I drove nude through the Wendy's drive-thru (I did test it out by going through Taco Bell & BK).
I promise I will bring good raw football to Chicago!
We will play football like we have a hard on for winning!
Monday night Raw will not have anything on us!
Angelo can't spot talent.
Lovie can't develop players.
Lovie can't recruit good coaches or if they are good coaches, they grow frustrated by having their hands shackled by Lovie's conservatism.
The only constant on the Bears has been change.
Remember last year when Lovie said he needed new position coaches because they needed to "coach 'em up" better?
A big fat lot of good that did.
What makes anyone think that a new slate of position coaches is going to do much better in 2010?
This is a team with marginal talent that probably won't spend much in the offseason to acquire free agents.
The league will adjust to Aromashodu. They will also pummel Knox and Hester at the line of scrimmage, making their speed much less a factor.
The defense will be another year older, slower and we will still have no stable secondary.
We also will face a much tougher schedule in 2010.
This team has shown a propensity for whining -- at the defensive line position (T. Harris) at the linebacker position (Urlacher) and at the QB position (Cutler).
I don't see that changing much.
Just like Lovie holds onto the failed Cover 2 scheme, the Bears players hold onto the ghost of the 2006 team.
BTW, did anyone notice that Ron Riviera's team made the playoffs for the second year in a row (even though he had to deal with a number of key injuries on defense)?
Riviera had to make adjustments.
That's something Lovie has never understood.
Someone please wake me up from this unfolding nightmare, oh wait I'm not asleep and I'm not dreaming. Damn.
conspiracy theorist says Mr Ron (got fired from U of Illinois and never produced a top racked offense since) lost his mind and thought that if he called the offense like dodo that the owners box would agree that it was Lovies fault fire Smith and promote him to HC. Then he was revisited by reality. Lovie (the level headed Big Boss who maintains his bearing) Smith is the head coach and should be. Rod does great with the D line dont change that. The defense struggled underneath the coverage was too deep get healthy Urlarcher. How many games have we won without you. And a full time DC will fix that. Consider looking to the top college teams for position coaches and what not. Bring in unequivical winners and we'll march into dynastyhood next season. P.S. Stop hating Lovie the Soldiers of Soldier Field love him. 13-3 or better
LMAO! And the Bears have a fluke season in 2010, win 11 games and win a playoff game. Contract extensions for everybody? More and more Lovie.
TEs have the best year ever and you fire the coach? I don't get that one. I guess Lovie had to throw everyone under the bus in order to save himself. What a P.O.S., fall on your sword with honor.
Gee, I didn't see this one coming.
And they played so well this year, too.
What's next?
Hiring the nude driving former asst coach from Detroit?
What? They're interviewing him? OMG
Bring back Abe Gibron.
Glens:
You misspelled the team name,
with Cullen it will be the BARES.
WE WANT COWHER!
WE WANT COWHER!
LET IT BE HEARD
Defensive Line are you ready for Joe Cullen?
Joe Cullen to pump up Bears D-Line, Lets see how the D-Line squirms when he is coaching them while in the buff. Don't turn your backs boys.
The media will have a field day... Picture the boys being juiced up for the game....
Talk about the false starts and Offsides and Holding..
Lets face it.. The Bears new post game show... The Naked Truth.. Field Day!

Same idiots with man crushes on Kyle "neckbeard" Orton. Most of you will be screaming a whole different tune next year if the Bears go 11-5. This was a messed up season. But it doesn't warrant a head coaching change. Last year I thought the Bears would go 4-12 and they went 9-7. Did you honestly thing they could've make the Playoffs with the roster they had last year and this year? I was disappointed just like everyone else but I say give Smith 1 more year to get it together. Give these young players another Year of developement (especially the recievers). If we win 11 games next year I promise the meatballs will be singing a different tune."
You thought the Bears would go 4-12 last season but others have the footbal IQ of 0??? Wouldn't that place yours in the negative region? Lovie has had the last three seasons, so a genius perspective is to give him another chance as this team has become worse over that period. The young players would be more developed if Smith played them instead of trying to make a KR a #1 receiver.
Doesn't warrant a coaching change? You lie about being a Bears fan.
Funny the guys who come on here and call others challenged have the dumbest post themselves.
We need a new waterboy here in Champaign, Turner are you interested now that you need a job.
To all Bears fans:
I am sorry to hear that you are not happy with this decision to keep Phillips, Angelo & Lovie.
I APOLOGIZE FOR THAT BECAUSE I AM COMMITTED TO WINNING!
Please continue to go to the games & spend money, don't boycott our merchandise and most importantly: stay stupid & shut up!
Smart move. Take the money saved from keeping Lovie and buy yourself an o-line and big play receiver. Get Urlacher on the field, Devin off the field except on special teams and watch us win the wild card next year.
Good. Should have never got a chance to run any program after running the Unv of IL in to ground. They need to go after a veteran wr like Marvin Harrison so he can teach the young receivers to finish there routes. Bring in a strong offisive coach to teach Cultler the game of when to throw the ball away veses squeezing it into a window thats not there.
As long as DA BEARS have a waiting list for season tix
they will do what they want, when they want. All you goofs
in Bear costumes every week @ the games just let the owners
know they don't have to change a thing. The same garbage
happens on the north side every year, a bunch more(3.5 mil)
in Cubs drag go see the 100yrs. war continue @ Wrigley
cemetary. You want some bang for your buck? Go to a Hawks
game, it took them a while but their on the fast track now.
By the way is Rev. Harris going to practice this week?
Oh silly me, DA BEARS season is OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Welcome to 2007... Turner should have been let go then. Why is it that any sane fan knows what the heck to do but the McCheapskates don't?
Michael, you aught to be ashamed of yourself. You fired Ditka after losing season and you keep this staff after three?
SHAME ON ALL OF YOU MCCHEAPSKATES!!! PAPA BEAR MUST BE TURNING OVER IN HIS GRAVE...
I never in my life would have imagined the complete distruction of a once proud franchise.
Shame on you. Shame on you all.
That is all.
Uncle Meatball
Bring in DON CORYELL as offensive coordinator! He's only 85 years old!

Come on now, don't hate. The girl at the Wendys drive thru window was cute, I wanted to show her my Supersize, oh wait that was McDonalds, how about my Whopper, oh wait thats Burger King, my deluxe Double Stack yeah thats Wendys.
The Bears coaching staff didn't hold anyone accountable this year and they wont do it next year as well. It all steams from the Head Coach. I am Offically a Packer Fan as of Today. Bears Suck!
I think the National FootBall Leagues, made the right decisition about keeping Lovie Smith as the Chicago Bears Coach!.....
turner is awful
Virginia should learn a little something from the Buffalo Bills. FIRE THE WHOLE COACHING STAFF.
"In 2006, the Lions suspended Cullen after he was arrested twice, once on a drunk-driving charge and the other on a charge of driving naked through a fast-food drive-through lane."
That's our guy!
Are the Bears going to place another full page apology for keeping Smith, Marinelli and Babich?
I hope Rod doesn't get the DC by default... Martz, as our OC?! He can do a few good things, but he's not about balance, and uses Time Outs slightly better than Lovie.... Ron Turner, your pathetic, sure your a nice guy? Lol, go be Norv's clip board holder. I think we should get Perry Fewell as our DC.... Not that it matters, this New Staff has one more year, and then they'll be asking Ron for options on what to do...
The Ad apologizing to Bears fans said they were committed to winning. AND ALL YOU DO IS FIRE TURNER!
MCCASKEY YOU ARE AN IDIOT!
What a slap in the face to Bears fans, it's like thanks for your money but shut up and stay stupid!
BOYCOTT BEARS MERCHANDISE FOR 12 MONTHS! Except the shirts that say "SELL MCCASKEY SELL"
The Writing on the wall was already there for Ron Turner. He deserves to be fired, as the offense stunk the joint up.
Also the McCaskey's are not going to fire Lovie & throw away about $11M left on the contract. And if you fired Jerry Angelo, than Lovie would have followed suit as well.
Who is the best offensive coordinator that is available? There is no mentioned of that.
If the Bears do not make it to the post season. Then you fire Lovie & Angelo both.
Hey, Ginny, WAKE UP! please
Smith's staying is the Peter Principle in place. This organization does not care about the team or the fans. The defense is still the bigger problem. What are they doing to improve this? Lovie will keep that stupid cover two which is not working. Marinelli hasn't improved it. Are they keeping Babich?
So let's see if I have this right. Bears carved up the Lions defense for many seasons and the guy responsible for it will possibly running our defense? Wow.
Simply shocking news! Now someone better come over right now to apply salve on my bedsores. MICHAEL...
Clyder on January 5, 2010 12:39 PM
If Cullen showed up on the practice field nude, whould Lovie have a reaction or change his expression?
Nope. He would do his usual...get on his knees and suck him off. That's why the players love playing for him so much. He doesn't put a foot in an ass or call anybody out for playing like a total loser. Great stress free environment to work in when you makes millions as a player.
@ron, i was just going to say, 9-7 at best, and if they do that good, it will not be because of Lovie's coaching.
But we are stuck with Lovie for 2010.
Then, BC is coming for sure.
Can u say charlie weis o.c or mike martz
Fire Turner blame Turner for Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelos failures... At the beginning of the season the WR position was the weakest by many. But surprise they were not the problem. The defense can't stop the run much less can't prevent a 3rd and long either. The line of scrimage is owned by the other team (both offensive and defensive) Players don't show up for the 1st qtr) Mentally that is? Blown assignments! Penalties add that and its a wonder why any coach remains. Add the big mouth Uracher, (for the best of the team) and lets not exclude Jerry Angelo for his poor top selection in the draft. Where are they? A super Bowl appearance years ago doesn't make up for the Bears annual hibernation. Sack 'em all. Bit the bullet and spend the money. Keeping Lovie and Angelo is wasting another year or two. Try bringing in free agents when the ship is half sunk. Sink it totally and start the rebuilding.
To those saying the Bears will fire Lovie during next season wake up. Never in the Bears history have they fired a coach mid season. He's here for at least one more year when they can then get BC in here for 2011. The bears even with a new O coordinator will be at best 9-7 next season which will not be good enough for Lovie to keep his expiring contract. We still have no O line to speak of.
@clyder - Bob Babich is Lovie's boy. But you got a point.
If Cullen (Mr. Driving Nude) is hired would we have to change the name to "DA BARES"?
Think of the merchandise, uh no don't go there.
MICHAEL MCCA$KEY AT LEAST VIRGINIA HAS AN EXCUSE SHE'S SLEEPING! $HAME ON YOU!
Why does anybody care what the Bears do? The Bears are losers. They had 1 good season in '85 but other than that they suck. That's the real history the Bears have. Sure if you want to be a loser and brag about the days before Superbowls when there were only a handful of teams and they actually won, great. I hope your car is from that year too if you like living in the past. Me, I'm not surprised because the whole Bears Packers thing is how they distract you from the the big picture. The big picture is the Bears are losers as usual.
What's with all the Cullen haters? Do you guys not understand how tough you have to be to drive through a drive through naked?
Good news on Turner....but...Marinelli as DC? The former head coach of one of the worst football teams in human history? A team that couldn't stop a 10 year old from getting into the red zone? And it looks like Smith is staying? It's probably a good time to turn my interests to soccer. (No, that WOULD be an act of desperation...Euro kick ball...ick.)
@zak
just a sell out by Bear ownership, they're sucking up some salaries this coming year, so as to hire Cowher in 2011. So, the moves are just that, moving a few chess pieces, and minimizing the cost, (silly as that is for them to do).
If Cowher has said, he'd come out this year, the probably would have forked over the few pennies their going to save by keeping Lovie and his staff next year.
Selective firings typical Bears. Turner takes the fall and Lovie stays. Buffalo sucks but they fired the whole coaching staff, guess the Bears weren't taking notes. Now they're interested in hiring Cullen? Arrested twice? Are you serious? What the he** are the Bears doing. Bears want to hire a former coach with a criminal record. FANTASTIC!! Bring back Tank Johnson, sign Pacman Jones and Plaxico Burress too, make it complete. What a complete freaking circus. I'm a diehard Bears fan but I won't be supporting them anymore until the right changes are made. The stupidity coming out of Halas Hall is ridiculous. I'm just thankful Papa Bear isn't around to witness this garbage. Next season the NFL North will have the Minnesota Vikings, the Green Bay Packers, the original Detroit Lions and the new Detroit Lions, formerly known as the Chicago Bears. Unfreakingbelieveable.
If Cullen showed up on the practice field nude, whould Lovie have a reaction or change his expression?
So let me see if I have this right: The Bears fire a coach who has no indiscretions that we know about, promote a coach who was 0-16, and hire a coach who drives nude and drinks before he gets in the car? Turner might be bad but I would rather have a coach that is dressed during cold football season. Well the good news is that the comedians will focus on the Bears and not Blago.
I agree Turner had to go but:
1) He didn't make the dumb personnel decisions
2) He didn't have anything to do with the horrible defense
PHILLIPS, ANGELO & LOVIE SHOULD ALSO HAVE BEEN FIRED!
BOYCOTT ALL BEARS MERCHANDISE FOR 12 MONTHS.
@OBANDOUG,
There are a lot of Jay Haters, non sports fans, and the like that can't see the big picture.
There is the huge upside to Jay Cutler that you write. Some of us get the picture. This is Jay Cutler's team now. It's a pass happy league, and Ron Turner just couldn't adjust to the changes.
When he finally let Jay play the whole Offense picked up.
Now, on Lovie, plain and simple, they sold US FANS out.
The obvious play here is the Bears have talked to the Roon' Family in Pitt, and Roon's have talked to Cowher.
Cowher via the Roon's has told everyone "wait one more year". A smart move on Cowhers part. Letting the Bears clean up some of their little mess first. Then he walks in, has a few draft choices, and maybe he has us tackling in practices. Maybe he raises the hair on accountability? THAT JAW, will look much different than Love's lockjaw.
It's all in the bag for Cowher to become the coach of the Bears in 2011. By keeping Lovie's salary one more yr., the MC'CHEAP's sold us out for a mere 5-6 million in spare change.
The only way I could be happy about Joe Cullen joining the staff is if after a practice near Halas Hall he went to a Wendy's, gave his order, and Jerry Angelo yelled out from behind the window, "you want fries with that?"
brubacher is right on. Angelo's personnel decision's are atrocious. Omiyale, Pace, making Hester a WR, extending Urlacher for a huge sum at 32 years old, Bazuin, Okwo, Garret Wolfe in the 3rd round, Gaines Adams, I could go on for a long time.
I'd be a little surprised if the McCaskeys would agree to hire Rod Cullen due to his past arrests. They have always been big on image and family values.
I'd be a little surprised if the McCaskeys would agree to hire Rod Cullen due to his past arrests. They have always been big on image and family values.
Now that Turner is fanally gone will his entire staff be gone with him. I mean guys like Tim Spencert RB coach, Pap Hamilton, QB coach, and espacially the very incompetent Harry Heistand.
Glade i am a Northwestern football fan.
There is way too much focus on Lovie and not nearly enough on Angelo. He has made so many errors it is crazy and you can't win without players.
I agree that the Bears' coaching is weak, but not even the best coaches could make this group of players look good. There is no protection on the offensive line, and there hasn't been a consistent pass rush since 2006. None of the receivers would be better than a #3 on most teams in the league, and the secondary can't stop any good receivers. The coaching changes are just window dressing for a total lack of talent. Until the organization starts identifying and developing real talent, this team won't get close to another Super Bowl.
What about Lovie????? Does this guy got dirt on Ted and Jerry. Seriously how many Coordinators is a head coach allowed to fire and still keep his job?? This will be Lovie's third offensive coordinator and his 4th Defensive coordinator. Its not like his coordinators are leaving for head coaching jobs like the Patriots guys do. I mean no one in the NFL is given that many chance. NO ONE!!
Good thing they didn't fire Angelo. It looks like Matt Millen would have been the #1 guy on their list to replace him.
There is a huge difference between DC and Head ball coach. Marinelli is great at DC, Remember they lost two starting linebackers in the first few weeks and the secondary has been inept since the SB (an arguement could be made it's why they lost that game anyway). The bears were 9-7 last season and 7-9 this season not that much difference. They will be better with an O scheme shaped around the QB. Lets put Hester in the slot plus returning kicks full time. A couple more adjustments in the secondary and O-line maybe even a good free agent X and things won't be as bleak as some seem to think.
DO THE RIGHT THING AND FIRE THAT LOSER LOVIE SMITH.
ANOTHER disapointing season, one would think that would indicate change. Turner and other Offensive coaches gone, while its a step in the right direction the team needs a taxi in the right direction to get back on the path of being competitive. I must ask at what point does it make sense to sign any coach off a team that went 0-16 not to mention 2? (Rod Marinelli, and his side kick booze boy the naked driver) This front office takes a middle school nurse approach to running a franchise, regardless of the problem they just slap on a band aide and send you back to class, eventhough you have a compound fracture and the bone is sticking out of your leg (Lovie Smith).
I don't think Martz is a good fit for a outdoor NFC North Team, (outdoor/no turf)!! He had a handful of HOF'ers on that Rams roster, we have none at this point. (Pace doesn't count he's old and so beat up he can't bend down to take a shit in the morning not a good combo for an o-line men) Some day we the Bears will get it,I'm 31 I just hope it happens before I die, one Championship a generation is not an acceptable pace!
It's a START!!! Now show Lovie the same door!!!
Typical Bears. Fire a scapegoat and be cheap. Lovies job situation is all about money. He is owed how much? Forget that in light of the team's offensive struggles the defense struggles couldn't stop Virginia McCaskey from running for a first down and Why? Who was in charge of the Defense? The Bears problems have been that they lost both sides of the line of scrimage consistently. Add that Bears players regress oppose to improve makes every coach (even Lovie) to be shown the door. Don't even think about the 1st quarter lack of showing up?
As for Mr Angelo... when are you ever going to address the line of scrimage problem? It helps when the QB doesn't have to worry about defensive players interfering with the handoff to the Rb much less setting up for a pass. Maybe Orton and Grossman would be a lot better if they had more than 2 seconds to scan the field. DUH!
Watching the Bears under Lovie & Company is like what it was in the Wandstead years Boring and asleep at halftime.
Forget Cover Two.. Worrying about winning, much less being competive. Duh Bears are boring and need discipline too many mistakes and broken down plays. ie lack of COACHING!
Are The Bears Owners Too Cheap To Clean House Or Are They Too Greedy To Clean House. They Would Have Made Less Of A Profit By Cleaning House, But They Still Would Have Made A Profit. It Was A Pefect Chance To Bring In Shanahan, Who Has 2 Super Bowl Rings, And He Could Have Persuaded Both WR Marshall, and DL Dumervill (both free agents) To Come To The Bears.
So, what do you all you Cutler bashers think of the trade now? He did what Grossman, Orton, Griese couldn't do. He got Turner fired! Well worth the draft picks given up.
Half the problem fixed. The Bears will procrastinate and then they will fire Lovey about three or four games into next season.
Why are people still saying the Cutler trade was bad? Orton played well this year overall (choked in the final game) but he's not someone that will ever lead a team to a Superbowl. At least with Cutler, we have the talent at QB to take us there. He definitely has some maturity issues but he's 26. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt that he'll work it out. He's our best chance even if we had a #1 pick this year.
The bigger concern should be hiring a naked dude for the D-Line. I know it shouldn't matter but who is going to show this guy any respect? If I found out my boss was driving around naked, it would be hard to get past.
That's the ticket, hire more losers from the Lions, a LOSING franchise. Especially the naked ones. Good idea.
And with the first pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears select...............
now for lovie angelo and marrinelli. hire a top notch coach can you say bill cowher.
Gotta love it! They trade Benson and Johnson due to their bad behavior and are now (allegedly) going to hire a guy who tried to show the Wendys girl his frosty? Nice! Class organization we have here.
Football has become a joke league wide. Seriously, could the game be any slower, any more predictable? Do we really need 3 timeouts to drag the last 2 minutes into 20 minutes, littered with car commercials? I lost interest long before the bears decided to suck. I'm just glad they air Blackhawks game now. Finally, an action sport.
In my opinion: ONE timeout per half; NO VIDEO REVIEW (unless it's truly questionable, in which case the review SHOULD COME FROM THE BOOTH, not the coaches); no 'commercial breaks' in between TD-extra point, extra point-kickoff, kick off-next offense drive...I mean seriously?...3 commercial breaks after a team scores? That turns me off more quickly than Lady Gaga. Also, play clock reduced to 20 seconds, PLENTY of time for these guys to get ready...maybe if they didn't walk everywhere and take their sweetass time, they wouldn't need 40 seconds to get a play called into their in-helmet headset.
very bad OL....very bad receivers....weak running back. yea, fire Turner...that should fix it.
Well, I now have my scapegoat in place for next season, with 0-fer Marinelli running the defense. So I will get a free pass after missing the playoffs, yet again, in 2010.
I nedd some rest, starring clueless at the scoreboard for 16 games is more tiring than it looks.
Where is MIKE DITKA when you need him
The people who were responsible for the Cutler/Orton trade need to be held accountable. It was a bad trade and I said so last summer.
It wasn't the head-for-head trade of the QB's that was so bad. It was the addition of choice draft picks that resulted in this trade dooming the Bears for years to come.
A coaching change won't help a team that won't have a 1st or 2nd round draft pick for next year. Just think! The Denver Broncos will be the beneficiary of the Bears poor won/loss record in the draft. Plus, the Broncos have a competent QB who isn't a "problem child" for the coaches.
Coach killer Cutler has taken down another coach.
This is what happens when a big arm is accompanied by an empty head, someone other than the person who brought in the brainless QB has to take the blame.
More to come in 2010
OK--let's start the Charlie Weis watch.
Here's a guy who will take no c-rap from anyone.
This player sits, this player starts, we need a pick up at this or that position.
He can be the anti-Angelo, i.e. someone who can evaluate talent and not give guys too many chances until they produce.
And we'll never see that stupid wide receiver screen again.
Apparently it is cheaper to blame everything on the assistant coaches instead of the two guys responsible for how those assistant coaches perform.
I missed this when it happened. So, Cullen was sober when he was buying food naked?
If the Bears are going to clean house, start at the top with Lovie Smith. He's not blind, he was aware of Ron Turners ineptness and he did nothing to change the offence. As a head coach you have to take the bull by the horns. The way to motivate young players is to get in their faces when they are not playing up to their potential. Smith is incapable of this. He is too passive to be an NFL coach. Fire him and make the city of Chicago proud and not another embassament in 2010.
Doesn't it make you sick to your stomach that a guy like mike and Kyle shanahan are there for the taking, and our FO does nothing but say lovie is still our guy? It makes me sick to see snyders plane flying into Denver, and hearing all the rumors that he will be announced as the HC tomorrow. When we will be making the same announcement about keeping a coach who's team looked like it plays high school football on Fridays.
What's wrong with driving naked?
Underlink:
1. The anatomical space located between the human genitalia and the human anus.
2. The smell of Ron Turner's offensive play-calling.
Synonyms: taint, perineum
With the addition of Marinelli last year and the speculation of Cullen joining the Bears soon we are slowly becoming the Detroit Lions. This news is BS. Fire Lovie Smith and get a real crew in there. DO YOU HEAR ME VIRGINIA!!!!
well after all this is the bears...
Well hopefully we never have to see another wr screen attempt on 3rd down again.
Anybody who thinks we need to bring Martz in is crazy unless they want us to look like Detroit under Marinelli, 0-16. I can't believe our defense is going to be run by the folks that ran the 0-16 Detroit team. That's insane and just moronic. Martz would just seal the deal to our ultimate trip to the very bottom of the NFL. Charlie Weiss would be much better. Bring Weiss in. Sure he didn't do so well at ND, but his offense in New England was incredible and wide open. We'll need to score a lot of points to win games next year with the defense being coached by former Lions coaches.
With Turner gone, a great weight has been lifted from the Chicago Bears organization.
Don't get too excited about Joe Cullen yet.
The Bears might not want his naked baggage.
Don't hire Martz, what will we be then "a team that comes off the bus throwing" That guy is Hudini, he can make any running back disappear!
Last year it was Babbich's fauly. This year Turner Next year, Mr. 0-16.
Somehow the quotafilling clown in charge of it all seems to made of teflon. Pathetic.
At least one more year of the outdated Cover-None D, terrible game management, and of course, staring emotionless and clulessly at the scoreboard
what's an underlink?
This is all sort of funny.
So Mr. Mumbles is still our Head Coach. They fire Turner
promote Marinelli and interview Joe Cullen, the same guy who encountered legal trouble for, among other things, driving without clothes.
Yeah guess that proves the Tampa Mob is still running the show.
So who is they're next hire? Got to be some other loser from the Bucs.
What an absolute laughing stock.
And for those that think Marinelli was a great coach at Tampa Bay...Get Real...Monte Kiffin was the reason for they're success on defense.
Welcome to the "Fall Guy" starring Ron Turner in place of Lee Majors. Apparently Turner wasn't good enough buds with the Bears brass as he should have been. Seriously though, not a surprize, and the O-Line coach definitely needed to bite the dust. Sure would be nice if the Bears could find an offensive guru to replace Turner, so hopefully Martz is that guru, because it looks as if it will most likely be his job.
'MEET JOE CULLEN', the Chicago Bears new D-Line coach.....Cullen will be hired and Ron Marinelli wil take over as Defensive Coordinator for Lovie Smith, but, Lovie wil still be the head coach....Lovie Smith really is Chicago..."Upper Management with a huge salary, no work responsibilities, and underperforming underlinks"
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/62734/introducing_joe_cullen_best_nfl_coach.html?cat=14
Marinelli came from another big loser team; Detroit. Why does anyone think the defense will be better with him? Remember when Ron Rivera was coach; they had one of the best defenses in the league...and you can see how great San Diego defense now is. Lets put blame on cheapskate McCaskeys for not wanting to pay Rivera what he was worth.
Sure; maybe next year; the Bears will have a much better offense; and better play calling; but the defense will still suck until they get a better D-coach.
Great. Toss Turner under the bus and bring in another buddy from a failed enterprise. 0-16 here we come. Maybe Virginia will wake up after next season and through out this bunch of clowns. Angelo gave Turner nothing to work with but he's still got his job -I can hardly wait to listen to the drafting genius' excuses and rationalizations. What a wothless, incompetent organization.
Oh good...now we can really look like the Detroit Lions. All we need is Mike Martz to take over the offense.
Angelo is the joke. This team will be a joke while he is at the helm. The fact that they blame their troubles on Ron Turner and then promote a failure from the worst team in the NFL speaks volumes about the descision making capabilities of the leadership of this team.
I don't know anything about Hockey...but I am about to learn! Thank god I have the NFL package, so I can watch other teams.
Don't go putting it on Cutler, Ron (3 yards and a cloud of dust) Turner bought this one himself. In what bizarro Fantasy futbol league does calling a run up the gut on 3rd and a country mile, constitute ANY semblance of competence.
The guys a gimp, straight up. This D*uche couldn't call effective plays for a Pop Warner team, WHY was he ever allowed to call them in Chicago? The U of I football program is STILL reeling from the damage he did there. Zook is trying to clean up the mess but it sure hasn't been easy.
So to Ron Turner we bid a (Not so) fond Adieu. And don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split 'cha!
Wait til this press conference later so we can hear sleepwalking lovie say "We're close" "We're closer than we've ever been" Close to what exactly? Close to a top 10 draft pick or a mediocre middle of the pack 9-7 nfl team? I can't take it I will not renew my season tickets and I won't watch this team until smith and angelo are gone I'm wasting my time and money supporting this sad sack franchise.
Now go hire Mike Martz. Since we have no early draft picks, sign Brandon Marshall from Denver, spend money on the OL. Again, the BEars don't have to pay a bunch of money to a first or 2nd rd pick. PUt HEster back as part time receiver and full time returner. Run from the a 3 or 4 receiver set. Marshall, Devon A, Knox, Bennett, Hester. Do what many teams do, open up the run by spreading the defense. On Defense a healthy Urlacher is going to help tremendously. Find a FA safety. I admit I believe 2010 could be a fun season. Go BEars.
Thank you Lord ! That guy was terrible !! I am convinced he did not call any of those plays in the first half of the Minnesota game when the Bears were cookin ! I hope this isn't a stal tacktic to keep Lovie - he shoudl go too -- they need to toughen upand start hittin again Go get Doug Plank!!
Good riddance and 2 years too late!
Ron Turner was a failure when he was the OC during the godawful Wannstedt years. Then he went to U of I and destroyed that program, breaking a record for losses. Twice.
Then he came here and did his best to destroy the Bears.
Turner belongs coaching high school. His skillset is terrible and he has no vision.
Would you call a run play up the middle on 3rd and long if YOUR running back was Garret Wolfe? Turner did.
Would you force Cutler, one of the best scrambling QB's in the league, to stay in the pocket when the pocket collapses because your O-Line is terrible? Turner did.
Turner is about as creative of a coach as the copy machine in my office.
Now, please take the O-Line coach who has worked with Turner for 12 years with you and go find a good high school to ruin.
This is the guy who was rewarded for singlehandedly destroying the Univ of Illinois football program by getting an NFL O-coordinator gig. He's the brother of Chargers coach Norv Turner, who is only half an idiot, not a complete idiot like Ron. In other words, he's in the club, and will soon get another cushy gig on some other NFL team.
hey boodownbears, you say that marinelli has proven to be a successful defensive coordinator. Really? When was this? Has he ever been a defensive coordinator?
They better alert the employees of the Lake Forest Wendy's that Joe Cullen is in town.
I'm glad Ron Turner is gone but there is a scarier thought: what type of coordinator is going to come in here considering after a year he might be out of a job? It definitely won't be a top notch one.
This organization is in shambles now! What a mess!!! Thanks Jerry.
Really. 2010 I'm going to just keep wishing they lose - and 2011 I hope for a lockout - and 2012 I hope for a sale -
Here's a question - which will rebound first - the Bears or my house's value
Surprise, surprize. Mr. Cutler finds another victim to NOT
get along with. First with the Bronco's, now the Bears. There is more problems internally than meets the eye. Any and all offensive line's will suffer if Jay C. finds someone to dislike. Why don't they let Jay be the recruiter, maybe he can surround himself with his kind of people, Kudos for Jay's arm, now can we do something about his being such a big-headed brat.
Oh, yeah. That fixes everything.
then follows up here by coaching a defensive line that couldn't sack an order of groceries.
----------
Of course they could sack an order of groceries. Where do you think they found these losers in the first place? They were sacking groceries.
Cutler's only here for 5 years, one of which is already gone. So when exactly does da Bears dynasty begin. How about some sense of urgency from the yahoos at the top.
He should take over for Ron Zook now. Now 2x Bears offensive coordinator, should get a chance at being 2X head coach.
Why do proven losers keep on in this league.Marinelli, now his D line coach coming in? Matt Mullen in the TV booth opining on what has to be on the football field.
Today is a sad day in Bears history to be a fan...
This organization is clearly about the almighty dollar. in the business sense I can't dislike this organization making money and saving money.
However, as a fan this blows!
Keep Jerry, keep Lovie, make Rod the DC and bring in another Lions guy that was apart of the 0-16 season. Hmm...It is all about money and not until people wise up (i.e.stop buying the product) will REAL change occur.
Those small changes saves money...They could have went out and got a real DC. I bet Martz is next in line to be the OC. He will probably sign for league min.
Business wise this organization is outstanding. They probably could sell water to a shark.
First of all, Marinelli, as a defensive coordinator, has proven to be pretty successful (at least in the past). But, on the other hand, I strongly believe that a full house cleaning is in need. Unfortunately, I have to disagree with Robert -- he's forgetting the person who brought in a firm to help find Angelo -- and his name is Ted Phillips, team president. The house cleaning should start with him for hiring the guy, Angelo, who has made so many of these recent hare-brained decisions. But, those are just my two cents. Giving Lovie one more chance with an "or-else" ultimatum may actually work. He is not a bad coach, he just is a coach that doesn't really adapt to personnel changes.
I can name you about 5 coaches who have kept their jobs despite 3 straight losing seasons. I can handle one more year of Smith. I can't, however, handle one more year of Angelo, or by extension, Ted Phillips. Anyhow, my rant is done.
My God! Is this the best Angelo can do? Rod Marinelli goes 0-16 with the Lions, then follows up here by coaching a defensive line that couldn't sack an order of groceries. And now, based on that brilliant record, he's being PROMOTED to Defensive Coordinator? Can't wait to see who Jerry will bring in to screw up our offense even worse than it is now. Lovie lingers on. And then, there's the upcoming draft... The despair deepens.
Turner was garbage and should have never lasted this long. Every season the Bears finished near the bottom of the NFL in offense. F U Turner and your dink and dunk BS
As for Ron Turner his West Coast offense just didn't fit Jay Cutler. Timing passes to inexperienced receivers. No qb rollouts. Seven yard passes when needing ten for the first down. No running game. Jay Cutler's brain freeze on his interceptions didn't help. Seemed like the last 2 games against the Vikings and Lions Turner opened up the offense and played to Cutler's strengths or, in other words, Turner trying to save his job.
As for the defense. I don't care who the coach is. The Bears never controlled the line of scrimmage defensively. No pass rush then you get games like Arizona and Cincinnati.
Finally! 1 down and 2 to go. Otherwise it doesn't matter.
THE MCCASKEYS ARE EXACTLY WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!
The lions have more talent than the bears do.
========
Right, that is why the Bears slapped the Lions twice this season.
Cullen was arrested and charged with indecent and obscene conduct Aug. 24, the night before the Lions' third exhibition at Oakland. A worker at a Dearborn fast-food drive-thru window saw him naked behind the wheel of his SUV and called the police, according to police reports.
Then Cullen was arrested and charged with drunken driving Sept. 1, the night after the Lions' exhibition finale against Buffalo. After he sped down a Dearborn street without his headlights on, someone called the police, and when the police found him, a breath test determined his blood-alcohol content was .12, over the legal limit, according to police reports.
No doubt Turner needs a fresh endeavor. Lane Tech might need an OC. What about the offensive line? Was it Turners uncomplicated (read simple) offensive philosophy or were these bozos just too untalented to pull off even Turner's predictable efforts?
For example: How do you know Turner called a running play?
Answer: Matt Forte leaves the huddle with tears in his eyes.
If the Bears keep Pep Hamilton (QB coach) and Daryl Drake (WR coach), then I know Lovie has talked with Mayor Daley and Todd Stroger on how to keep administrators happy.
The whole lot of em should have been let go. Keeping Lovie for another year is just going to delay the inevitable. He'll be fired next year. And they will have a new offensive coordinator this year, who will also be fired next year when everyone is purged. So, Cutler will have been through 4 coordinators in 3 years. All this is doing is wasting Cutler's prime. They need a GM that knows how to bring in offensive talent quickly so that the offense can be stablized. The entire defense is old and needs to be reworked, but now the team has no top picks in the next two years, so they can't draft anyone, so they need to bring in free agents, and Angelo has never been any good at bringing in free agents.
Turner should be gone, we need a guy who understands that we have one of the top 5 QB's "potentially" in the league, and run plays to support that. Next year will prove I'm right with Mike Martz in the fold. Watch and take note!!Bears in '10
A couple of giant steps in the right direction.
If you can't get it right please sell the team.
And Angelo stays ????? Sure we get rid of the worst OC. but what about the worst GM ???
Come off the bus running, then push Tunner under it? Give Lovie a bus ticket out of town!
The lions have more talent than the bears do.Calvin johnson is better than any receiver in bears history.Stafford is better than cutler.I'd take calvin johnson over anybody on the bear roster he's a real #1 wr not some practice squad all star who gets overhyped like deven aromamishubuai
Thanks for your hard work Ron. Too bad it starts at the top though. Jerry A never could draft an offensive player. Maybe we can offshore that portion of the draft to China or India. No. Just give that task to a 10 year old Chicago kid with a draft magazine in his hand and he'll do better.
So, no accountability for 3 years of mismanagement?! Are we SURE the Bears aren't owned and operated by Mayor Daley and the city of Chicago?
I'm just sayin'.
rlr you are hallucinating. He may be a great guy but he completely lacks imagination and creativity, an asset required for OC's. Also, he has never been able to develop anybody. His players get worse the longer they play for him.
I wish him luck too I'm just glad he is no longer with the Bears.
Isn't Joe Cullen the guy who drove up to Wendy's drive thru window naked? I guess when you can't get Singletary to drop his pants to motivate, you go for the next best thing.
I still am holding out hope that Martz is not the choice for OC. Cutler won't survive the minimal protection his scheme provides...
You got to be kidding me? Marinelli as DC??? And now they are looking at another LOSER from the Lions organization??? Why on earth do they continually pick people that are proven LOSERS? They are so inept!!! I'm turning in my season tickets!
seriouly? we are hiring Lions retreads? f' this organization
Marinelli our new DC...I guess Angelo got his wish. He tried to hire him from Tampa before he was hired as head coach of the Lions. I guess if the "D" sucks next season, we can officially blame Angelo for this mess. Looks like the same ol same ol...Marinelli only knows the tampa 2...him and Lovie are lock-step together in defensive philosophies...Angelo needs to go big time!
Ron Turner is good man and has more than adequate skills as a coordinator. It's a shame he takes the fall for the offensive woes. Doesn't matter who the QB is or offensive coordinator is when you start the year with an aging offensive line and your #1 receiver was a special teams guy who can't quite figure out where he is supposed to be and the rest are young guys just learning the business.
Too bad and I wish him well. Quality guy.
Oh no!!!! Bears need to hire Rivera as DC with the promise that when Smith gets S.C'd he gets the job. Another dismal season looms. BRING THE BLACKOUT BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I say clean out the entire house - GM all the way down to coaching staff - they have had enough time to mess around and try to get better - the one year into the super bowl is not good enough - chalking that up to a major fluke or stars aligning - whatever - start over period.
Predictability by field position, lack of being able to run outside, and horrible play calling ='s fired
Now do the same for Lovie.
Seriously? Rod 0-16 will be the new DC? Let's hope the offense can score 100 points a game!
