VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Add another chapter to the Blackhawks' nasty rivalry with the Canucks.
Following Vancouver's 5-1 victory over the Hawks on Saturday night, center Ryan Kesler called Hawks winger Andrew Ladd a "coward." Apparently, Kesler is still angry about a hit by Ladd during last season's Western Conference semifinals.
Late in the first period Saturday night the two dropped their gloves, took off their helmets and squared off. After sizing each other up they came together and Ladd drilled Kesler with a quick, hard left. Kesler then lifted Ladd's leg and took him to the ice. As they were escorted off the ice, they jawed at one another and Ladd pointed to a spot under his eye, indicating where Kesler had been cut from the punch.
"He's a coward and that's the way it is," Kesler said on Vancouver radio station AM-1040. "It started last year in the playoffs. He hit me, cross-checked me in the face when I wasn't looking. At least he was man enough to hit me when I was looking this time."
Kesler got what he wanted and a bit more when the two were facing each other as Ladd's punch found its mark in the Hawks veteran's first fight of the season and fourth of his career.
According to hockeyfights.com, it was Kesler's second fight this season and the 14th of his career.
The teams will meet again once more in the regular season, March 5 at the United Center.

Really lucky left by Ladd. Really lucky. I'm no fan of Kessler but Ladd is a punk. Hawks are an awesome team though! Chicago is set for Cup I'm thinking.
The point is NOT the fight on Saturday -- it is Ladd's blind side shoulder to the head / face of Kesler -- when he was no where near the puck yet -- in the playoffs last year -- THATS what Kesler is talking about. Seriously one of the chaepest shots -- to the head yet -- that you'll see. I saw it live at the time and have seen many replays. It should have been a major penalty, attempt to injure and a suspension to Ladd. The lack of call was and is appalling. Either people have poor or short memories or just don't get it. Have a look at the tape, its been replayed alot!! So its not about who got one punch in or who won a consentual fight -- Kesler has never been a good fighter -- but he continued in that game last playoffs after Ladd's cheap and dangerous hit to the head -- it bears repeating -- when Kesler wasn't even looking -- so that to me seems like toughness and nothing to do with fighting ability. As for Ladd, that hit was as close to the definition of cowardly as you could get. If someone applied a heavy blow to your face and head when you were not looking, or expecting it b/c, say you weren't near the puck in a hockey game -- would you call that cowardly? Would you respect the person who applied the blow? I like the Hawks, but that was a world class cheap shout by Ladd, well, well outside of tough and physical play, so I understand Kesler's comments.

That said, I have to disagree with one thing in Particular. You said they have very good players because they stuck 5 in the net. Well.. That its always good to score 5 goals but they were outplayed the whole night by the Hawks as happens sometime in Hockey. They were also facing a Goalie that had not played Back to Back all year and got 3 in the 1st, 2 that were the yopung guys fault (If you will). They got outshot by alot and the Hawks were keeping the puck on net consistently. The ONLY thing about the rest of the team besides the Twins i liked was the way they kept the net clear for Luongo last night. Again, i dont think that will play out o the playoffs if they face each other.

I am loving the rivalry between the Canucks and the Hawks. A lot of emotion going on there. These teams, in my opinion are the two biggest cup contenders in the Western Conference. If either of them are going to win the cup, I would bet that there going to have to play each other in the playoffs. Then we will probably find out who is better.
Saying that Canucks rely on Luongo is actually a vary valid statement. He was biggest part of the Cancuks on Saturday and that's why they pay him $7 million a year. The Canucks chose to use a big part of there cap for a #1 goal tender and the Hawks didn't. I think it was a good move to. He isn't performing at the top of his game this year, but the whole Canucks team is and that's why they managed to put five in the net.
Ryan Kessler isn't a coward and neither is Ladd. Tackling someone to the ground, doesn't make you a coward and neither does cross checking.
You Americans shouldn't be so hard on Kesler, after all, he is American and will be playing on your Oylmpic Hockey team. He will probably be a big part of it to.

The canucks is a a cry babies, like Alex Burrows got a fine from being a cry baby. Based on the reactions, something may have been lost in translation during our post about Alex Burrows(notes) of the Vancouver Canucks receiving a $2,500 fine for accusing Auger of premeditated bias, followed by the NHL telling us that the matter is "closed" as far as additional punishment for Auger from the League.
Initially, Burrows using a public forum to expose this alleged bias from Auger seemed like proper whistle-blowing. But in hindsight, and in assessing the fallout, it was the wrong tactic: What was a dispute between a player and an official.

The canucks win last night was probably the biggest upset in nhl history. They beat the number team in the nhl with a 50% AHL defense. I don't think that's ever been done before.

Kessler got in over his head and resorted to trying to wrestle. Perhaps this is an example of what the NHL needs to crack down on , this grabbing the leg to throw the player down to "win" the fight . They should make that a penalty as that is a dangerous play that a player may be seriously hurt by.
