By Brad BiggsMOBILE, Ala.--The perception at the Senior Bowl is the Bears can't give away their offensive-coordinator job right now.
Not after Hue Jackson did a 180 before traveling to Chicago Monday night, opting to join the Oakland Raiders before even meeting with the Bears.
The job represents an opportunity for a coach to come in and work with a young former Pro Bowl quarterback in Jay Cutler. Yet, San Deigo assistant Rob Chudzinski backed out of consideration over the weekend following an interview last week. Like Jackson, Jeremy Bates, who ended up in Seattle, wouldn't show up to interview and he worked with Cutler previously in Denver.
Another man who worked with Cutler as a member of the Broncos staff is
Tennessee offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger. He called Cutler a
valuable asset for any play-caller and remains a big fan of the
quarterback. Heimerdinger didn't see why Cutler would be a deterrent
for any potential candidates, one of the theories that has circulated
here this week.
"I thought he was an easy guy to manage and work with," Heimerdinger said. "I had no problem with him. I think he makes it easier because he's going to tell you how he feels. He's going to communicate what he likes and what he doesn't like. When he does that, it always makes it easier for the coordinator so you can get on the same page."
So the job would be a no-brainer for anyone looking to be a coordinator?
"I don't know all the things that go with it so I would be a bad guy to ask," Heimderdinger said. "The quarterback is very talented and that's about all I know about the whole situation. He's a good quarterback."

Didn't Cutler go 8-8 his last year with the Broncos?
Cutler is not the issue. The issue is job security which could be alleviated thru a properly structured contract. The OC should receive an excellent salary guaranteed for 3 years which would be enforce despite obtaining other employment. Golden parachutes work- just ask Lehman and Morgan Stanley.
I cannot wait to see all of these people on here cheering for Cutler and saying "I knew it all along" when the Bears are back to being winners. These are the same people who said that it was the best trade ever.
What kind of article is this? Are you serious? The number one reason no one wants to come to the bears is because this will be Lovie Smiths last year. Who wants a One year job. The Bears will fall on their Faces next year because they have NO draft picks to get anyone that doesn't need a few years of development. Will not spend the money to get Free agents to help fix the major holes on the team. Also, the bears will not get rid of anyone that has some value to them. To bad the majority of the players on the team will only get you a 2nd round pick.
IF the Bears got rid of Urlacher, Hester, Tillman, and Harris, they may be able to get a second round picks. The only bad thing is Urlacher is the only one that will get you a second round pick. Hester will get you a 3 or 4th round pick and a number 3 wideout. Tillman, a 3rd round pick, and Harris will get a 3rd rounder and a player. The Gains Adam trade was horrible and it's sad that he passed away. but still that was a horrible trade!
looking at Cutler as the problem is like saying Liam Neeson had a part to play in the downfall of the star wars saga heheh. Cutler knows what the problem is, and is doing his damnedest to be as professional about it as any young, sane and competitive man could be in that corporate fiasco that is the Bears ownership. His apparent "dis-interest" on the field is his bitter and barely masked disappointment for the cover-your-own-ass "defense" that Lovie focuses on in front of the podium instead of the skills he has at his disposal on the field. Ron Rivera know's what the problem is too I imagine. If there were no money in this franchised and over-analysed game and just pure honest reaction, we all would know.
Bears in 2017 on January 27, 2010 10:53 AM
Two sure things about our future as Bears fans. We will never get a highly respected coach to come here while Jay Cutler is our QB and we will not have a winning season while Jay Cutler is our QB.
It sucks to say, but it is the truth.
----------------------------------------------
Wow this guy see's the future and speaks the truth. Sounds like the head of a cult, do not listen or ever pay attention to this guy. The Bears will never have a winning season as long as Cutler's here, even though they were all round awful and 1 win from even and 2 wins from a winning season last year. In spite of everything & that list is oh so long.
I was skeptical about picking up Cutler in the first place. His demeanor reminds me of a friend I once had, who always had potential but never really amounted to anything. Jay has great physical talent, but succeeding at the NFL level requires a great mind also. Cutler doesn't seem to be in the game most days, just going through the motions. Even when he makes a great throw, there isn't the enthusiasm you'd expect from somebody who just made a great play. I suspect he needs to be treated like a baby, and I'm guessing the candidates for OC aren't looking to be his father. Jay Cutler will never amount to what many in our town have predicted. I understand the excitement behind picking up our "quarterback of the future", but in hindsight we all probably jumped on the bandwagon too soon. A few interceptions here and there, maybe you could say it was bad playcalling by the coaches or lack of talent at wide receiver. However, I don't believe there's an excuse for throwing more than 20 interceptions in a season. Most of us can't make that many mistakes at our jobs, and still have the full backing of management. I'd be on the street if I made that many mistakes at work. Simply put, Cutler is exactly who Josh McDaniels thought he was, and Bears fans were fools to jump on the bandwagon when we traded away our future to get him. History will prove what's really true, but don't expect Mr. Cutler to turn into the next Peyton Manning. He just doesn't have that kind of unique talent. A strong arm doesn't equal God-like status. It's time to bring Jay back down to Earth where he belongs. As soon as he accepts that he hasn't proven anything, maybe he'll come around and play like a teammate - as opposed to a prima donna who doesn't care about the mistakes he makes and how they affect his team. With all that said, I hope for a great future in Chicago, and would love to see Jay become successful. It just doesn't seem like that's going to happen anytime soon. That's the biggest reason we can't get someone to be OC in Chicago. You couldn't pay somebody enough to be a loser.
All these cutler haters are not even bears fans anyways. There a bunch of idiots hanging out in their grandmas basement blogging all day. Mr biggs. The problem isn't cutler it's lovie. I'm suprised you would even write an article like this. Cutler is the only bright spot on this team. No one wants to come to Chicago for one year and then get fired because lovie has one year left. Cutler and company I expect are going to have a big year the defense is what we should be worried about going into next season.
JAD --
Exactly who are the Bears competing with in terms of finding an offensive coordinator? A team or two?
There is no need to rush.
A lot of teams don't fill positions completely until March, and they do just fine.
In fact, I think the hasty job search is exactly why teams end up with bad personel. It's only a perception that you need to work quickly.
In about three weeks, this will all take care of itself.
Like you said, they need to know who they want. Not just hire someone out of a need.
In the meantime, calm down. This is not a crisis.
Cutler dumb? I wouldn't say that.
Cutler not able to make quick enough quality reads? Absolutely. Look at early Petyon Manning footage. He was not always able to figure out early coverages. I am not saying that Cutler will ever be good enough to sniff Petyon's jock, but there is room for improvement. Despite having an awful season, Cutler still set a number of Bear's single season passing records. I do wonder if the Bears would be better off with Jay making the line adjustments instead of Olin. Olin has blown a lot of line calls in the past 3 years.
I hope we sign an OC soon. Jay needs to get on the same page with his receivers ASAP. That was a MAJOR problem this year.
I don't know.
Maybe the issue is the Bears are doing what they said they would do, and way various options?
The underreported rumor is just that. That after Bates, they have not been quick to offer jobs, and want to speak with other people.
That's called a job search. And in most professions, when people want to make a solid hire, the process of making that decision takes at least a month, because people don't want to make a hasty decision.
Seriously. The last time someone was hired at your job, did they hire the first person they interviewed, if it wasn't an internal candidate? Or did they post the job and take multiple applicants.
That's how things work. . . . except for meathead Bears fans.
With Ron Tturner as O.C. How could anyone fail?
And lets not forget that stellar Chicago Bear offensive line. Two yards and a cloud of dust. What a bunch of road graders. I'm sure the Hall of fame already has their bronze statues in some back room.
The problem the Bears are having in finding an OC isn't the QB. The issue is any person that they bring in as OC will probably be looking for a new job after the 2010 season when Lovie and his staff are filing for unemployment. Why take a job with no job security when you can get more committment from another team, even if that team is as bad as the Raiders!!!
I think all those people Cutler dumb must be mentally challenged then. You all seem to forget that Cutler led Mike Shanahan offenses when he was a pro bowler. Shanahan expects his QBs to do a lot so I'm pretty freaking sure all you idiots need to shut your traps. Everyone is making a big hoopla about trying to get a big name coordinator. Well I got news for all of you, even Don Shula calling plays is not going to make a difference if he doesn't understand the players this team has and calls the right plays with the personnel we have. Ravens QB coach took the raiders OC position because they had already offered the job to him (a firm offer), he still had to interview with the bears hence he wasn't offered the job, he was just given the opportunity to possibly get the job.
I think a more likely reason we're having trouble filling the position is the instability at the top of our organization. It feels like whoever comes in as the OC won't truly have control over the offense. It doesn't feel like the Bears give their coordinators the freedom to run the team the way they'd like. Nobody wants to take a job where they know they'll be micro-managed particularly on such a large stage. To bring in top talent, you need to hire people with a vision and give them the freedom to execute that vision.
Cutler is one of the only reasons anyone would want to be the OC for the Bears. The only reason nobody wants to come to Chicago is Lovie Smith. Get rid of Smith and everyone will be knocking at the Bears' door.
You people amaze me. Now Jay Cutler is dumb??! The guy who played his college ball at Vanderbilt? You all are aware that that school has a very high academic standing, that it is not easy to get into, even if you are an athlete...correct? You are aware that you cannot be dumb and get into Vandy...yes? Further, let's look back at Cutlers track record: He asked all season long for Aromashado to get more playing time, and what happened when he finally did? He asked to have more plays called with him rolling out, and what happened when they were? Everything he asked to occur has been pretty on point if you ask me. If you ask me the guy has more football intelligence in his pinky toe than 99.9% of you. If you're going to call someone dumb at least show some intelligence yourself.
Now I know why everyone I know outside of Chicago calls us the dumbest sports town in the country...It's not Jay Cutler, it's because every possible coach knows that Lovie and the staff will more than likely be out after next season, WHY ON EARTH WOULD ANYONE JUMP ON A SINKING BOAT?
NO PICKS, NO PLAYERS!?!?!!?! Why would anyone come here, it's like vacationing to a city in the middle of a hurricane?
That's it, that's all!
It could be Jay Cutler...or it could be the far more likely reason - that whoever takes this job has a better than 50/50 chance of losing the job in a year after another bad season when management cleans house.
But I guess when you're working in a dying industry, one finds the occasional need to drum up stories and controversey. Another solid example of journalism...
I am so sick of hearing Bears fans state that they would rather have someone else other than Cutler. I have been a fan for 32 years and this is the first time I have been excited about the QB position in a long time.
Do we all have such short memories and forgotten the likes of Jonathon Quinn, Shane Matthews, Henry Burress, Kordell Stewart, Chad Hutchinson, Cade McNown, Rick Mirer and the list extends to at least 15 more bad QB's. Give the kid a chance. Everyone that thinks he is dumb must not have heard JaMarcus Russell speak. If you had then you would know who is the dumbest player in the NFL is. Also, Ron Turner can't even call a game on Tecmo Bowl when there are only 3 plays. He would still get it wrong.
Get on board and support your team. Too many people complain on this board about every little thing. Cutler is here and thank the football gods because I am sick of seeing 3 QB's play a year.
