Roenick: Goaltending could derail Hawks' hopes

jeremyroenick-ss.JPGStaff report

Former Blackhawks star Jeremy Roenick, now an NBC hockey analyst, said Wednesday the team's Stanley Cup aspirations could be torpedoed by unproven goaltenders Cristobal Huet and Antti Niemi.

"A lot of people say they are the best team in the National Hockey League right now, I cannot argue that fact," Roenick told "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on WMVP-AM 1000. "Their youth, their enthusiasm, the only thing that everybody says, and I'm going to have to agree with them, is the goaltending situation.

"Can Huet bring them 16 games (in the playoffs)? I say no, I think he can probably get you through two rounds," Roenick said. "To go 16 games, you need a goaltender that is going to stand on his head and is going to steal games.

"And Niemi is a good goaltender too, don't get me wrong, they just need that one little extra boost in goal that I think that would make the guys more confident in front of him. And if those guys are even more confident than they are right now, that team will be unbeatable. They are still two good goaltenders, but I don't know if they could do it for the full 16 wins."

Roenick said the Blackhawks might consider trying to trade for a top goalie.

"They can get by with Huet, there's no question about it," he said. "They can even get by with Niemi, they're so good. It just comes to if your goaltender has a bad game, though, and especially in a big-time situation, that's not going to bode very well for a Stanley Cup championship.

"They are good goaltenders, don't get me wrong, it just remains to be seen whether they can really knuckle down and take it to the next level and allow this team to win a Stanley Cup, because I'm telling you, that team is poised this year to win a Stanley Cup, as good as they are."

AS FAR AS GOALIE TRADES GO, I proposed this on another forum some days ago:
----------------------------------------------------------
1. The HAWKS send HUET and SOPEL to the CAPS.
2. The CAPS send THEODORE and NYLANDER to the JACKETS.
3. The JACKETS send MASON and FILATOV to the HAWKS.
----------------------------------------------------------
STEVE MASON is young and has been very good in the past and probably will in the future. COACH HITCHCOCK has a horrendous relationship with young players, hence the reason that FILATOV decided to go back to the KHL for the rest of this season. Now if the JACKETS plan to terminate HITCH in the off season, then they SIMPLY DO NOT MAKE THIS DEAL !!! Guess we will see ???

TOM COTNER on January 23, 2010 2:05 PM

AS FAR AS THE GOALTENDING FOR THE HAWKS GOES, I do think that NIEMI is our starter beginning next season, and I would like to see COACH Q play him in 2 of every 3 from heree on out, as he has clearly earned that distinction, even though he does give a SOFTIE every now and then. In regards to HUET, he simply DOES NOT move from post to post fast enough and often gets stuck out of position. If it weren't for the talent in front of him, his #'s would be alot worse, I believe.
----------------------------------------------------------
OMAHA ROBB: I really thought I'd had seen the last comment about KHABIBULIN. I remember all the posters who were clammering for the HAWKS to resign him in the off season, as though they thought he would soon repeat his 2003/04 season. NOW THE OILERS KNOW WHAT I ALREADY THOUGHT WOULD OCCUR ONCE HE SIGNED A NEW CONTRACT. HIS CAREER MIGHT JUST BE OVER AND EDMONTON WILL BE ON THE HOOK FOR THE ENTIRE $15 MILL.
----------------------------------------------------------
I have heard that the DALLAS STARS will NOT be resigning MARTY TURCO, and this guy has WON a CUP and could be a terriffic pickup for the HAWKS, if we could get DALLAS to entertain a trade for HUET, even though it is clear they have decided to go with ALEX AULD as their starter.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE STIRRING OF THE POT WHEN J.R. MAKES AN OPINON ABOUT A TOPIC. When I 1st heard of this J.R. interview with the CHICAGO RADIO STATION, I could only think how PATRICK ROY commented when J.R. tried to advise him how to play the goalie position. And this is NOT a knock on J.R.; the guy is full of class and is always good for an interview. MATTER OF FACT, I'LL BET HE COULD BE A GENUINE PROMO DELIVERER FOR PRO WRESTLING !!!

Kirk BlackHawk on January 22, 2010 8:51 AM

Ducks have goalies yes... could get the opld fella for a song and he has something left to prove. He is huge and talented and has won a cup.

Goaltending is an issue and jr is trying to point out something cause he cares.

jr, you will recall, was the one who had his face smashed in in what...his first playoff game was it...or regular season game? And still played and scored? Bled our colours and I think he is right about the goaies...hate to see us have our chance....and then fizzle out because of a long shot leaking in...... remember that?? Or ... those??

Gretz himself stated that the hawks in his heyday had old espo and bannerman.... enough said?

We would have won a cup in the 80's with a real goalie.....lets not repeat history and work like hell to get to the ball and be asked to leave.

Waukegan Tony on January 22, 2010 8:46 AM

Why? can't the Hawks win with Niemi. He can absoulutley steal a game for us. Remember the game during the circus trip in Vancouver.

The Canadiens twice won the Stanley Cup with rookie goal tenders. Kent Dryden and Patrick Roy. Kent Dryden won the Con Smythe Trophy before the he won the Calder Trophy.

The dreaded Red Wings have won three Cups with Chris Osgood. He is not exactly Marty Brouder.

I love Tony O, but how may cups did he bring to chicago?

It is a team game, and teams win the Stanley Cup not just goal tenders.

Chuck D of Valpo on January 22, 2010 12:47 AM

If you want to know how the goaltending is doing for the Blackhawks, perhaps you should ask Glenn Hall or Tony Esposito for their insight. 1960 was so long ago. Just saying.... Hope springs eternal and life is good.

Mike McFae on January 21, 2010 4:57 PM

JR, your point is old and tired. Goaltending is less than perfect on a fantastic hockey team.

Most Hawk alumni have too much class to harp on what everyone already knows, so class-up and start rowing in the same direction as the rest of the ardent fans. Management is trying to address this obvious imperfection and I wish them well.

Robb In Omaha on January 21, 2010 2:25 PM

JR is right and it was even discussed by the Blackhawks insider on CSNChicago.com this morning as well. I have never liked Huet and I think that is also part of the reason Tallon got fired from being the GM of this team besides the free agent or restricted free agent debacle last summer. Niemi maybe something one day however, still needs more experience as it is and Crawford will wind up leaving and getting his chance somewhere else. Khabby, if he was not having back issues and still with us, I would feel more confident with as he has won a cup already. Bowman hopefully will get someone to bite on a trade that would get rid of Huet for us and win the Cup.

Really, you guys are questioning what JR said? Huet gives up goals in bunches, while showing flashes of brilliance. But do we really need that uncertainty of which Huet will show up come big game time? I think they should package Barker in a deal and pick up a solid goalie. Barker is the turnover king of the NHL, can't stand him.

Right on JR! He belongs in the front office evaluating talent. He's forgotten more about hockey than Baby Bowman will EVER know.

Yeah...it's all Hossa's fault the last 2 years in the Cup Finals, his team hast lost. I mean, with his poor playoff numbers the last 2 years -
43gms - 18g - 23a - 41pts - +13

No way that helps his teams...what a choker. And playing hurt last year thru the playoffs with a shoulder that needed surgery...what a complete loser.

Thin The Herd on January 21, 2010 1:41 AM

LOL, have to laugh at the people sitting in front of a keyboard saying JR doesn't know what he's talking about.

The Keyboard Koaches know much, much less. (Goes for me, too.)

Huet has not been capable of stealing a game as other goalies have done against the Hawks. Niemi has, but the knock against him is just that he's an unknown quantity in the playoffs.

But, his play so far points to him being a positive rather than negative surprise. Still a lot to risk with a team this good in most other areas.

Most likely, though, this is the goaltending the Hawks will have in the playoffs--other teams can see the same things, so why would they make a trade for Huet, as people continually mention--so get used to it and hope for the best.

The Blackhawks are such a good young team, their enthusiasm and speed is unbeatable problem is..... Hawks fans knew why JR noticed. GO HAWKS GO!

JR took the words out of my mouth. I posted 3 days ago that Huet was the weak link in the Hawks team - and that was before the Ottawa game when he was awful/out of position in all goals. Huet is too erratic and Niemi too inexperienced to get the Hawks the Cup - the Bowmans should try to pry away a top/experienced goaltender somewhere. Huet will never steal a game in the playoffs for the Indian Head.

Thanks JR, agree on Hawks team plays real well all they need is a solid goaltending to win the cup.

JR is the only athlete in the world who would suggest his own number be retired. But I have to agree with him on this one. Huet is SOFT and Niemi just does not have enough games under his belt. I think there is a guy in Anahiem looking for a starting job?

whiteshadow on January 20, 2010 10:30 PM

Any person who has watched the Blackhawks this season cannot credibly suggest that Huet has not cost the team at least 3 wins with some "soft" goaltending lapses ...too many times to think that this deficiency will not raise its ugly head in the playoffs. I never personally liked Roenick, but this is not a reason to disregard a valid opinion based upon facts. No, you will never hear a Blackhawk analyst admit to the problem since the tv and radio teams are just too close to the players. Wake up and smell the coffee, fans.

thats the first that came out of his mouth in a long time that makes sense.. People hes right!! There is no denying it. CH is a bust.. Give JR credit for that one. Dont kill the messenger in this case

Peter Smith on January 20, 2010 4:40 PM

Something to remember - The 'Canes got the Cup in 2005-2006 season with the play of both of their goalies.

Hey guys, I know how to shut Roenick up...

-Derian Hatcher

I think JR saw the word "anal" in analyst and wanted the job too badly.

JR, if you remember correctly, in the '92 playoffs Belfour stood on his head and still lost 4 straight to the Pens against TOM BARASSO - a mediocre goaltender less talented as Huet or Niemi. It's mostly about the team in front of the goalie... Speaking as a goalie, there are supposedly 5 people in front of me and my kind to get through to have a shot on goal, so let's focus on the defense to do their job so Huet and Niemi DON'T have to stand on their heads, shall we?

People could make fun of Roenick all they want but believe me Bowman is trying to get a goalie. This, however may not be possible. The truth ir Huet is extremely dangerous and could ruin a short series. I believe you will see alot more of Niemi in the meantime.

Windycity sportshack on January 20, 2010 3:21 PM

When did anyone ever, ever, ever listen to what that idiot Roenick has to say?? He's flapped his jaw every where he's been (except of course in Phoenix when Darian Hatcher of the Stars rearranged his braces). I agree about Hossa - great regular season player but is a no-show/jinx in the finals. If the Hawks make it to the finals and they lose Hossa should do the honorable thing and fall on a sword. Plus I hate to admit it but don't count the Red Wings out just yet - they could end up the 8th seed, fully rested and shock the hawks in the 1st round.

Commit to the Indian on January 20, 2010 3:05 PM

Two games in a row the "Frightening Frenchman" has allowed goals because he can't get off one post to the other. Think teams aren't watching? Remember Kaner's comment to Habby, "Hey Habby, keep that glove up". Players watch, pay attention, and talk to each other. JR is absolutely right. If Eddie O had done the game instead of Steve K I guarantee he'd have brought it up. Huet makes my stomach nervous now ... don't even want to think about May.

Marion Hossa on January 20, 2010 2:59 PM

The main reason the Hawks will NOT win the Cup is me. Just ask Pittsburg and Detroit.

With affection,

-Marion Hossa
