DETROIT -- If the Bears had started the season like they finished it, there wouldn't be mounting speculation that offensive coordinator Ron Turner will be replaced in the coming days.
Photo: Ron Turner watches Jay Cutler warm up before Sunday's game. (Chris Sweda/Tribune)
Would he be surprised if he's not brought back?
"I've answered that,'' Turner said. "Let's just talk about this game and what we're doing and we're pleased with the progress we've made. It was good to see the young guys get better and see their confidence grow individually and to see the confidence grow as an offense, and that's where my thoughts are right now.''
Smith has control of his coaching staff,
but there is no question that a lot of stuff will come up in the meeting.
Angelo hasn't been pleased with the lack of production by the offense this
season, especially the failures in the red zone.
"We had a lot of young guys, a lot of new
guys in the lineup, and as the season went on they got better,'' Turner said. "They continued to progress. As they played better, (Jay Cutler) played
better, or his numbers looked better anyway, and that's to be expected. We had
a lot of young guys that were learning on the job and growing up and
developing.''
If Turner is removed, he won't have a
chance to see them mature.

THank you for Aramoushou, still not mastered spelling that yet. Will soon.
Josh T, I agree with most of your players listed on the list except for:
Thomas Jones
Bernard Berrian
Thomas was a extremely solid back here in Chicago, and continued to be in NY. His AVG yards per attempt is very similar from his time here to his time there, and his final rushing numbers are very similar. He does have more touchdowns in NY over the past 2 seasons, but the Jets use him more, having more rushing attempts in general. If you remember the last season with Jones here he basically split his time with Benson.
As far as Bernard, well he is a guy that had career numbers with the Bears, and has not really become the impact player the Vikings were hoping to get. His best season was still in 2007 with the Bears were he grabbed 71 passes for 951 yards and 5 TDs. His 2008 season could have been a lot better if the Vikings has a Quarterback that could get him the ball, even so he averaged 20+ yards per reception.
A lot of the players you have on the list are typical things that happen to all organizations, especially with offensive lineman. You draft a young guy with potential, try to teach and develop them and they sometimes take a while, you are then forced to make a decision on them once they hit free agency, or you are forced to bring another guy in and choose to let the young guy that hasn't fully developed go. Another team picks them up and it just happens they are finally ready to play.
What is more disturbing about the Bears is they had Ron Turner years ago, he didn't get the job done as he was toovanilla, they bring him back and surprise surprise, HE IS TOO VANILLA! We need a qualified guy in here, someone that can run an offense, knows how to develop young guys, and can handle star QB egos. Hmmm. . . . Charlie Weis?
Instead of reiterating the fact that Ron Turner has accomplished nothing as offensive coordinator of da Bears, I'm going to analyze his gameplan yesterday. It clearly shows his lack of imagination or ability to fool the defense. If I remember correctly, 90% of Turner's plays were big or base two WR, one or two TE, one or two back packages. I-form & strong-I were his base formations, while he went big with twin TE single-back numerous times. He ran dives and off-tackles repeatedly and that resulted in frequent one yard gains until Forte's lucky 55 yd run. I don't think a counter, sweep or misdirection was used all game. Three WR personnel groupings were rarely used, except for third down occasionally. Granted da Bears put up 37 points, but they could've had over 50 easily.
The Lions have the worst defense in the league and it was a dome, yet Turner refused to spread the field. Instead he ran a basic, pop Warner offense and acted as if the weather conditions were 10 degrees and snowing. His playcalling is very predictable. Considering the amount of three-step drops, Turner surely thought da Bears were playing the '85 Bears. Culter finished with under 300 yards despite having mismatches all over the field. That is another reason Turner should be fired. He fails to take advantage of horrible secondary's. Did he know his job was on the line?
Ron Turner is like a bad penny, they always turn up. Its just that you hope if the bad penny pops up, that it appears on the other side of the railroad tracks. If not, then hopefully one has the guts to throw it away.

Keith,
I wrote the same thing a couple of weeks ago here is the rest of that list,
Cedric Benson
Justin Gage
Bobby Wade
Marc Columbo (was starter for Cowboys)
Mike Gandy (current left tackle for AZ, started in Superbowl)
Thomas Jones
Kyle Orton
Lusaka Polite
Bernard Berrian
Mushin Mohammed
All of these players have been able to play better on other teams. They may not be top tier pro-bowlers but the fact that they didn't do squat with the Bears then go elsewhere and not only start but automatically become more productive players shows that the offensive coaching staff is totally inept. Angelo must be pissed to see all these players that he brought in succeed elsewhere. Sorry Bears fans, Angelo is not as bad as you think. All GMs miss on draft picks but the list above all START on other teams and are more productive now than they were in Chicago. At the very least the entire offensive coaching staff needs to be done away with. Also, Cutler had been begging for Aromashadu on the field since the PRESEASON!!!! The coaching staff just game him a chance to play a few weeks ago. The coaching staff sucks!!!
I wonder did anyone notice Cutler's demeanor when he threw away (purposely)the botched screen call at the feet of his RB Sunday? The call was another example of why Turner doesn't get it. Yes, screens had been effective, but only when they are unexpected. Turner went back to the same old screen at a very bad time, and Cutler seemed VERY disgusted with the play call. I am not one to read things into facial expressions etc. normally, and It may have had nothing to do with that, but it seemed very telling at the time.
I have nothing against turner personally but he is years behind the times with his schemes and play calling. he HAS to go.
I too am worried about who the replacement might be if Lovie is still there. I hope Lovie is gone too, but either way turner must go.
Although I somewhat agree with Dan (below), he probably could have spoken a bit more intelligently....
I am not sure Lovie is the problem, and I hope they keep him and Marinelli. Turner, Angelo, and Babich have to go.
I am on pins and needles awaiting word from Halas Hall.
Haa. So true Dan. Sorry those offended but the board should be reviewed by someone who 1) understands sports and 2) can read and write. Half the people writing on this board sound like bigger douches than Dan and his F bombs. Big deal. At least he speaks the truth. Most other boards at least block relatively bad language. Obviously the Trib can't afford someone or something to do the monitoring. Tell your kids to read a book!
I'll be VERY shocked if any news comes out of Halas about Ron being fired. We all know Virginia has a strangle-hold on the purse strings. Ted can't do crap. Why do they even have a team president? If the big V knew what she was doing, Ted, Angelo and Lovie would all be gone already. Kiss the money good bye and get a new coaching staff at the very least.
Talk about a difference in the speech police of the two Chicago newspaper sites. The SunTimes got to be so pathetic, they'd censor the word screw, and yet the Trib prints a post like the one below by Dan. There probably should be a happy medium somewhere, but i won't even hardly ever read the Times anymore i got so frustrated with their speech police. That said, i don't really think we need posts like Dans either.
Dan- C'MON MAN?
dan NEEDS to be blocked from here , doesn't her realize that kids read this stuff , grow up dan , & write your comments elsewhere
Mark Columbo, Cedric Benson, Chris Harris, Justin Gage...the list goes on and on. They sucked when they were here, and went on to play pretty well on other teams. Did they suddenly get good after leaving the Bears? Or is Lovie too busy pillaging Tampa Bays and St. Louis has beens (Archuleta, Pace, etc) to develop these guys?
Fire Lovie and his stubborn but blind coaching style. Hire someone who will bring in a defense that can adapt and also develop players.
I can't believe that everyone really thinks it all Ron Turner! It Lovie not playing the right people, So lets all step back and really look this over
The team is starting to LOOK really good, so guys are stepping up faster then we though! Hester goes back to returns Ulacher comes back, Jay works all off season with the young guys! THIS TEAM CAN REALLY COME TOGETHER HARD NEXT SEASON? I know it sound screwy be it true Wake up people and have faith in the players to wake up also kick some major butt next year
expects got nothing tgo do with it, loser.
Tommie Harris said after the game, "They better keep, Lovie. If they start cutting, they better cut from top to bottom." Well said Tommie Harris. I hope you are one of those cuts at the bottom. Where have you been all year? The Teddy bears win two games, finish with a losing season, and miss the playoffs for the third year, and suddenly they think they are a viable team. Tommie Harris is an over-rated underachiever who likes a coach that allows him to reamin an under-acheiver. Lovie Smith has created a team of under-achieving misfits. It is so sad to hear the interviews after the bears beat the hapless Lions. The players sounded like they were heading for the playoffs. They sound content to be 7-9. This is the team Lovie has made. They have no pride, dignity, or courage. They save their best for last in order to save thier enabler. Hey Tommie Harris, that is not the Super Bowl you are headed to, it's the TOILET BOWL!!!!!!!!!Fire Lovie!

Hey if the listed changes above do not materialize this week .....
Let's do this......
Let's petition the Chicago Bears be rename them Chicago Goats.
That we we can laugh at a joke team and not worry about pride anymore..cuz they are goats....
Heck the folks at Hallas Hall can even orginainze goat feed parties during team
practices and even invite to the post game reporters to ride them after a another goat loss -Laughter would abound...It would put Chicago on the map for the most goatish
team in the NFL ..Besidesother teams would feel good about themselves...and we would just laugh at a situation that was and always will be meant to be....
Virginia could do cameao apperences for the 53 man roster maybe take a few minutes
and pat the goats(players) on the heads..."Nice Gottee want some more hay in your contract extension" ? You so cute chewing your cud....
Ok, so let me make one thing very clear hear folks........
Am I feed up with this team ? You betcha ......
I need to laugh ...For winning and crying just isn't cutting it anymore.....
It's all over -Forever...
GO-GOATS !
Oh Yeah.....
FA, we should pick up are
Malcom Floyd Height:6-5, Weight: 225 of Chargers, YDS 776 as the 2nd Wideout.
Steve Breaston Height: 6-0 Weight: 189 of Cardinals, YDS 712 on the Year as a 3rd Wideout
Too bad you can't trade coaches in the NFL.
Ron Turner expects to be back as OC.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
IN YOUR DREAMS.
I can't wait for Black Monday. It will be a pleasure to see Ron Turner get fired. He stinks..stinks...stinks...STINKS AS AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR.
This is not Turner's fault . It's Angelo's . I know he'll need a scapegoat . Fire anybody , fire Angelo . I listened to the postgame show on CSN and Jiggs and Jim Miller say a new offensive coordinator will set the offense back , not forward . Then what , start the whole charade again with Lovie being fired next year . Forget that , I only have so many football seasons in my lifetime .
Hey Chicago remember me? I need a job and I'm making a comeback, watch out Cutler I still have a cannon of an arm and I'm going to be invited to training camp.
Frank OMG was another GREAT pickup by Angelo. He jumped offsides 3 times today vs. the Lions. Boy, those long arms are great. Get this idiot out of here! Take Garrett Wolfe the smurf w/ him. We need Brandon Marshall. Our best WR is not even that good Devin Aromasomething. This team suxs and EVERYONE MUST GO!
Ron expects to be back next season, and I expect a nice, sunny 80 degree day tommorow. Now where did I put my swim trunks?
If it was up to me I'd give the whole Bears coaching staff big fat contract extensions.
I think this Dan guy that is f bombing is really Cutler or
Hester, and maybe Lovie.
Dan, please make yourself more clear. Are you into sex or
just upset with Turner. Now, for all you Pack fans, I say
YES YES YES, TURN MAN IS BACK BABY...........
Bring Norm Chow as Offensive Coordinator.
He is perfect fit for the Bears and QB Jay Cutler.
Ron McDonald would even be a better offensive coordinator.
I hope everybody comes back.
Please fire RonLovieJerryVinny TurnerSmithAngeloDelNegro.
I want to congratulate Ted Phillips, Jerry Angelo, and Lovie Smith for another successful season. You will not only be back next year but extensions will be handed out when your contracts end.
Thanks to the dumb Bears fans The Chicago Bears sold out all our home games this season. It is nice to know that whatver crap gets put on the field you idiots gladly buy it. We also forsee home games sold out in 2010, 2011, and 2012 regardless of what direction this Bears team is going.
Thank God, we have the dumbest fans in football. In Chicago we don't have real fans we have real dumb fans.
That would rather choose to be blindly loyal and watch the team lose rather than be proactive, force the owners hand to make changes and be a winner.
As for the rest of us Bear fans we will continue to suffer. At least the Blackhawks will give our proud city something to cheer about!
For those of you who think firing Turner is the solution, do you people realize that if Lovie stays, he'll only bring another one of his buddies to take Turner's place? Lovie must go, too. Also, Smith is responsible for the development of the players, not Angelo. Angelo has brought some good players in, but they all get destroyed by the coaching crews. On the other hand, Gaines Adams has to be the dumbest move he's ever made. It makes me sick to know that Brandon Marshall will become available and we have no way of getting him. I can't believe how these Tribune writers actually defend this lousy losing coaching staff; it's unprofessional as well as unbelievable. What shills!
It is time to make the wholesale changes in the front office and the coaching. I've been a Lovie fan through his time here and it was good to see the team have some success these last two games, but it's time to get a fresh voice in here. If I were to retained one coach it would be Dave Toub who has established himself as one of the better special team coaches in the NFL. He helped turn Tim Shaw into one of the best special teamers in the NFL. Like I said, they should clean house and it should start with Angelo. Angelo has proven that he hasn't had one solid draft class since he's gotten here. Granted, Angelo did pull off one of the biggest trades in team history, but the Bears need to have someone that puts together solid drafts after drafts. The Bears need to decide Angelo's future immediately so if they do let him go they can bring in someone that can evaluate the team and start the scouting process for the 2010 draft. They should look to the teams that has had some success in the drafting area and talent evaluation like a Pitt or New England. If the Bears do decide to let Lovie go then they should look at established coaches that has had some success in the past like Cowher, Shanahan, or even Billick. If they can't land one of them then they should look at someone that has had some success in the past with Cutler. Let's face it, the Bears future on the field is built around Cutler. If the Bears cannot get someone like the three I above mentioned established coaches then someone like Mike Hermindinger. Hermindinger would break up the streak of D-coordinator hires. Hopefully, if there is a new head coach brought in that that coach brings in solid position coaches especially a strong offensive line coach.
If Ron Turner returns as Offensive Coordinator....Im getting a new football team to cheer for next season....the Packers maybe? Just the thought of it makes my insides curdle....GET RID OF THE ENTIRE STAFF AND START WITH SOME PEOPLE WHO KNOW HOW TO PLAY FOOTBALL!!! FOR ONCE, LISTEN TO THE FANS....
Was he watching the same anemic, pathetic offense I was watching this year? If Turner isn't fired, I won't watch the Bears next year.
Dan spelled backwards is "NAD" and that's what he is acting like below. It's people like Dan that make Bears fans look like morons and maybe we all are for watching these games this year. Especially after the Cincinatti and Arizona games.
Yes, Ron Turner is as predictable as Lovie Smith is stuborn. They both have to go. Get rid of the cover 2!
Someone better get us some good free agents this year!
Corners & safeties are a must!
journalists shouldn't use the word "stuff" as a noun.
As much as I want to see the Angelo/Lovie/Turner show gone, I can't see the Bears getting rid of all three. In all honestly, I blame Angelo the most, as good teams always have young guys in reserves to step up for guys who leave in free agency. While good teams take players who played for good teams in strong conferences, we take players who are on Youtube for jumping out of pools.
l smith, r turner and jerry angelo could not coordinate a dozen eggs if they had a carton
Just have to say I love Chicago Bear fans! We are the habsolute best people!! Oh year, btw I hope Ron Turner gets fired big time!
If either Turner or Smith returns next season, then it's over already. I think fans should start boycotting this garbage ownership. It's the McCaskeys telling us they could give a crap about the fans. It's time we tell them back.
This team is so far from Halas it might as well be in the Canadien league. I'm not supporting a team with no chance in hell.
Turner is shit. Get him the fuck out of Chicago. Lovie is waaaaaaay overmatched by good NFL coaches. Quit embarrasing the city, and unload this gobbler. Then pitchfork the McCaskeys and create public ownership like the Packers have. These crapheads have no right to ruin this team for another ten or twenty years.
Geez Dan, get a vocabulary. I'm starting to think you went to school in the US.
I'm with Jerry - if they're bringing back everyone else why not bring back Turner. Not that I want him back or he deserves to be back, but he's no worse than the others. Why make him scapegoat? I find Loveless much more responsible for this mess than Turner. And Angelo didn't give him anything to work with. They should get rid of ALL of them and get Cowher or anyone else with a clue to what winning actually involves.
How exciting! Imagine this same crew back next year. I can't wait to watch the games. Heck I hope they bring back Orlando Pace at left tackle. Why not the same Quarterback coach as well. He has done wonders for Jay Cutler this year.
Hopefully the horrible Bill Wirtz like owners of the horribly coached Chicago Pretenders team are working out a buyout with Sleepy and his dumb staff. Sadly the truth likely is the horrible old lady owner is working with the many Chicago Sheeple writers in order to get the many dumb Bear fans to fall in line while at the same time lowering expectations for the rest of us so they can continue to sell out next year while putting on a low quality Friday Night Lights product.
If this happens everyone that is a Bear fan should stop being so until the horrible owners care about this team as much as the horrible owners. Firing Wrong Turner should not be enough for anyone.
If everyone else comes back, why not Ron Turner? Are people prejudiced against Rons? I wonder what players will depart? Fans have spent a lot of time on the coaches and Angelo in regard to employment. Journalists, announcers, and fans have not commented much on the players.
Oh thank god Turner and the gang are comming back. I don't think I could handle Cowher and his crew, all that winning might give me a suger high. Nope I am from Chicago and except for the 90's Bulls and the 05 Sox I am very used my teams loosing. Nope, give me good old fashioned mediocre football anyday. I also love getting parking tickets in front of my house in June because its a supposed snow day. Add to the list of things I love about Chicago, Corruption, drugs, murder, all kinds of fines, greed, pollution, planes flying right over my home late at night, prostitution, but most of all my Bears.
PS. I am not Satan and Jerry Angelo is not my sone. Really I mean it.
Turner can't coordinate himself out of a paper sack. What has he done to return next season? Bears offense was horrendous and he was in charge of it. He ruined Illinois football and he killed the Bears offense. The whole coaching staff needs to go.
This is a joke.......rite?
Is it April Fools day.......no. Than why is such a idiotic article posted because If not lovie being shown the door I atleast knew or atleast thought that turner was gone 100%.
This better be a joke!!!
If this blowjob comes back next year than there's really no point in following this team.
Dan...Mom is yelling from upstairs to tell you your hungryman tv dinner is ready...Holy Crap...lay off THE CAPS YOU KNUCKLEHEAD!!!!!!!! The capital letters are distracting to anyone who has a pulse and can read. Also, nice mouth. Obviously, a college graduate, given the completely incoherent fragmented sentences spewing from your head. Your parents must be so proud knowing that Rhodes Scholarship you received didnt go to waste.
I don't know how many more seasons Ron is going to waste for Bears. He has done it for at least 10 years. Please no more. Something tells me if he goes now, he will return again in about 4 - 5 years. Why does this keep happening to Bears? Why a coach who couldn't produce in college is given a job at one the most historic franchises? I guess we will never know.
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!! I HATE YOUR FUCKING GUTS AND PLAYCALLS!!!
IF THEY BRING BACK THIS STROKE THAN IT JUST PROVES THAT WE HAVE ABSOLUTE MORONS RUNNING THIS ORGANIZATION!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
GO RUIN SOMEONE'S HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM NOT THE CHICAGO BEARS OR BETTER YET GO SIGN WITH THE PACKERS OR VIKINGS!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
FUCK OFF RON TURNER!!!
Somebody remind him that the Bears are #24 in the NFL in O and # 29 in the NFL in rushing.
GO AWAY!!!! I want a winning team!!! With winning coaches!!
DONT BE CHEAP!!!!!!!!!!!! WE HAVE ARE SHOT AT THE BEST COACH OUT THERE.....BRING THE CHIN TO THE WINDY CITY!!!!!!!!!
u've got to be kidding me!
He should've been given the boot years ago and should be the 1st one to go!!!
Lovie should stay and Angelo should go.
Angelo becuz under his management, the team wasn't able to get T Johnson and C Benson on the right track....but look at them now.
Sorry Ron, you got to go, you have
been a disaster since day one and
i dont think these last 2 games
should be any reason to keep you
around.
