ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell is expected to be sidelined seven to eight weeks as the result of a reckless hit from the Capitals' Alex Ovechkin, the team announced Tuesday.
"Brian Campbell suffered a clavicle fracture and a rib fracture on Sunday," team physician Michael Terry said. "He will likely avoid surgery and we anticipate a full recovery. He should be ready to play in approximately seven to eight weeks."
Campbell will have his streak of 388 consecutive games -- second-longest in the NHL -- snapped Wednesday when the Hawks take on the Ducks. The veteran was checked hard into the boards by Ovechkin during the first period of Sunday's game, won by Washington 4-3 in overtime.
Meanwhile, Ovechkin issued an apology Tuesday but expressed disappointment with his t wo-game uspension.

"I am very sorry that Brian was injured and I hope he is able to return to his team soon," Ovechkin said, as reported by TSN.ca. "NHL hockey is a physical game. We all play hard every time we are on the ice and have battles each shift in every game we play so we can do our jobs and win. As players we must accept responsibility for our actions and I am no different but I did not intend to injure Brian and that is why I was disappointed with the NHL's decision (Monday). Every time I have the honor to play for my team, I will continue to do what I have done since I was taught to play. I will play hard, play with passion and play with respect for my teammates, opponents and fans. I look forward to returning to my team and doing everything I can to be the best player I can be."
The Hawks are practicing in Anaheim on Tuesday but defenseman Kim Johnsson (upper body) and goaltender Cristobal Huet aren't on the ice.
Nick Boynton, who was recalled from Rockford of the American Hockey League to replace Campbell, practiced and wore No. 24.

It sounds like Hawks fans are giving up on a Cup this year.

Ever been to Downtown Detroit? It's a Third World dump. Congratulations Detroit. Do you morons still throw a dead octapus on the ice? That's real class.
As long as we are cherry picking, the Bulls won more championships than the Tigers, Lions, and automakers combined.
------
Do you clowns realize that in the last few years the Red Wings
have won more championships than the Black Hawks, Bears, Cubs
and White Sox have won combined in the last 50 years? No town
has ever been more pathetic than Chicago, EVER.
If that's not a reason for the rest of the world to laugh at you, there will never be one. Enjoy
All you idiots who think Ovechkin meant to hurt him really don't know anything about hockey, or competitive sports.
As a 'Hawks fan, I guarantee half you morons who are calling out Ovechkin as a cheap player would be defending the same action of Buff or Eager did the same type of hit.
What I do not condone is the hit on Savard by Matt Cooke, or the hit Richards put on Booth. Those were at the head, and intended to injure.
Ovechkin has never hit anyone like that. Remember, he's 225 and a freight train on the ice. Campbell is a small d-man.
Watch more hockey and get acclimated to the climate and the culture of each players' game before you spew your inane and idiotic drivel. Ashamed to be a 'Hawk fan reading this stuff.
You can take your apology and stuff it or better yet save it for the next player you injure and the next one and the one after that. I do give him credit though he did apologize he didn't do a Michael Vick who is still at the top for lame apologies. If a lawyer reads an apology for their client at least get the terminology right. "I apologize to my Falcon teammates since I won't be with them at spring training."
What abunch of BS! 2 game suspension for a cheap shot and malicious hit on a guy with his back turned. This is why NHL will never become totally acceptable to sporting fans. When a players actions cause another player to lose rest of season and he only gets 2 game suspension. He needs to not be able to play or get paid until Campbell comes back from being injured. Do this just once and you won't have any more probelms with cheap shots. Give me the Olympic game anytime, no cheap shots and if there are then the player is suspended totally. Also, get rid of the fighting in the NHL, it does nothing but give a bunch of punks a leagal job.

If the Hawks ever actually win something, you can talk, until then we will just continue to laugh at you.
Let's hope Chicago can at least make it past the first round this year, that would be nice.

Excuse me? Someone from Detroit laughing at somebody else?

By the time he comes back, the Hawks players will be into their 2nd week of golf after losing in the first round to the Wings, again.
At 50 years, what's a few more without a a winning season?
IF the Red Wings do make the playoffs being a pretty shaky 8th seed and only 3 points from Calgary passing them.
Who?

Red Wing Fan you should look at your own team first before you judge another team's players, some of the Red Wings aren't choirboys

Let's see....8 weeks puts us at May 11. By the time Campbell returns the Hawks will have rallied and finished the regular season strongly, kicked the holy hell out of Detroit and Vancouver in the playoffs...
...just in time for the Cup finals against Washington. Revenge is a sickness. Justice is kicking the holy hell out of them on the scoresheet.
GO HAWKS !
Hawks fans are the dumbest of all sports fans.
I wish you people would shut up and stop making the rest of us look bad.
Sorry, but that wasn't just a push, it was a blatant cross-check. At first I thought that would be the penalty call. I was also surprised by the game misconduct, but on reflection that is exactly what the NHL needs to do: eject, fine and/or suspend even the top-level stars in the league when they are guilty of dangerous play. Putting a bounty on Ovechkin's head would only breed more of the same, returning the league to the Hanson brothers style of "goon hockey" it's tried to get away from since the 80s. Having said that, I won't shed a single tear should Ovechkin miss 20 games when someone blasts him into the boards. Karma... it's a beyotch!
@Steve - You have no idea what Hockey is about if you think it is nothing but thugs out there skating around until they can pair up. You played D1 football as a LB....whoop d friggin do. Hockey is a great sprot to watch and play. It is the best live sport there is period. Take your D1 I know cheap shots I was a LB crap and leave please
and you're another blue collar goof who gets drunk and yells at the players, wishing you didnt always get picked last in grade school.

You sound like an idiot.
The reason I'll never take my kids to hockey games is because this sport's main focus is cheap shots and fights on the ice. I played linebacker at the D1 level for four years so I know about contact sports. Hockey, to me is all about fights, thugs and smashing guys "into the boards"
boring!
Man, you knew the idiot Wings fans would be on here Talking nonsense as usual. It was nice to see Fans of a Real team (Vancouver) come on here with a little respect yesterday. The Wings and their nutty loser fans are just mad because they are what...... 17 points behind the Hawks. Ahhh who cares i guess. The Wings are just a 2nd tier team now. Vancouver and the Hawks are a Real Rivalry.
That said, There will be very few excuses from us real BlackHawk Fans if they dont win the cup. Losing Campbell hurts but.... As a team you have to play over it.
Since Oly broke the bones of our guy, I think it's only fair that an off the record bounty be put on Oly, the next time the Hawks and caps meet. Someone needs to come up from Rockford and break some bones.
It's not always the intention of the action or even the action itself that makes a play legal or illegal--or how illegal. The outcome also matters. (An accidental high stick to the face with no blood is a minor; with blood, it's a double minor.) Had Campbell spun after going down and hit the boards lengthwise, with no injury, there's no call. Had he hit head first but wasn't injured, it's a 2-minute boarding. He hit head/shoulder first and sustained a relatively serious injury. I think the suspension was too much (the ejection might have been too much also), but the major penalty was fine.
Yeah, O"kvetch"kin boarded Campbell. They were skating pretty fast towards the boards, and Ovi knew DAMN well what would happen if he even pushed off of Campbell - EVERY hockey player knows it, that's why players ride the other player to the board - to ease the impact. Ovi just nailed Campbell and that was just not cool. 2 game suspension is about right, though Ovi should get his the next time the Hawks play them. What goes around comes around. Grudges are easily kept in hockey, and Campbell will certainly work his way back into paying it back. Nice apology by Ovi, too... "I'm sorry, BUT..." Dude, that isn't an apology for your actions. You did something completely Busch league, man. Professionals don't pull stunts like that, and you could have injured him worse. Why not just put Campbell's head through the glass? Maybe take a crack at him with your stick? Drive his head into the ice? There are things as a player you know not to do out of respect for the other players, and you completely disregarded that. You're a pr!ck and you're gonna get yours soon enough, hopefully at the hands of a 'Hawk.
Dirty Russian
From what I've seen, Ovechkin plays hard, but that's a long way from chippy or dirty. I have more of a problem with guys like Semin and Crosby flopping on the ice like they've been harpooned after they get touched. But back to Ovechkin - the push was unnecessary, but a long long way from anything resembling dirty. Just unfortunate, as is the case whenever anyone gets hurt.
I completely agree with Amber...couldn't have said it better!!
If you wanna watch fighting, why not just go watch MMA??!!
Ovechkin plays hard, but that's a long way from playing chippy or dirty. Playing dirty just doesn't fit the guy.
As for a "reckless" hit, he just pushed Campbell a bit. The whole thing was unfortunate, but not dirty. Geez, the Pens Cooke didn't even get suspended for trying to decapitate a guy last week, so the league has to find some consistency.
RealityCheck: Retribution in the Stanley Cup finals consists of one thing and one thing only, winning it. All the petty stuff gets taken care of during the regular season
Mike - you're not a hockey fan if you think the sport is all about playing rough and not being a "nancy." The sport is at its most beautiful form when it's played on international ice. And, if you knew anything about this sport, you'd know international hockey play has NOTHING to do with rough play along the boards like North American hockey.
There's no room in this sport for crap like that hit. No, I don't think it was intentional, but I think it dilutes the game just as much as playing the trap did. Players have been begging for years to see more authority from the refs out on the ice. And, this is the reason why. Yes, Mike, the NHL PLAYERS want to see crap like this cleaned up. And, Ovechkin is WAY too talented to play like this.
Also, agreed on the retribution. Bertuzzi tried that and it cost him, the Canucks, and Steve Moore dearly. I would like to think the Blackhawks are too classy for that, though lately Kane has not been the epitomy of classy.
Here's to a good playoff season, Hawks. Go get 'em!
When the Hawks lose in the first round of the playoffs this year, at least now they will have an excuse.
"as the result of a reckless hit from the Capitals' Alex Ovechkin"
Nice unbiased journalism there. Stop whining. There was nothing dirty about it. Campbell fell awkwardly. Go watch the NBA, ya nancy boys.
With Campbell gone the Blackhawk's will never make it to the finals. As for cheap shots the Blackhaw'ks rank right up there.
What's with all the talk about retribution and putting a bounty on Ovechkin? Go talk to Steve Moore and see how he feels when another team starts talking "retribution". If the suits in the NHL front office would property discipline players who make these plays, the problem would be solved. Let's play hockey. Retribution will come when the Hawks beat the Caps on the scoreboard.
That doesn't sound like an apology.....
Come the playoffs....Time for the Hawks to take the Caps seriously.....How about Coach Q puts a bounty on Ovechkin's head? Reggie Dunlap would.
For fans of a team, one of who's members nearly removed a body part with a spear last year in the playoffs, it is interesting to listen to them whine about dirty play.
"I will play hard, play with passion and play with respect for my...opponents."
Uh...Alex? You've never done that.
Hope we see this thug in the cup finals.
So, as it turns out this could actually help the Hawks.
Too bad Ovechkin couldn't get a shot at Toews and Kane so the Hawks would have a legit shot at the Cup this year. At least they will end the year with their Olympic medals.
