The Atlanta Thrashers have called up 48-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios on Wednesday from the AHL's Wolves."Chris has been an outstanding leader and mentor for our young players in Chicago and his level of play has made him deserving of this opportunity," Thrashers general manager Don Waddell said in a news release. "He's a tremendous competitor who strengthens our group of defensemen and instantly adds a veteran presence to our locker room."
Chelios, the Chicago native and former Blackhawk, last played in the NHL in May for the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference finals against the Hawks.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution writes Chelios likely will join the team in Columbus for Thursday's game against the Blue Jackets.

Chelli will have a long career after hockey selling whatever it is that has allowed him to keep in professional NHL condition at 48. And this is not some "don't touch me" goal scorer. Just amazing.
