Nady determined to play regularly before June

MESA, Ariz. -- Xavier Nady said the June 1 target date mentioned by manager Lou Piniella on Wednesday for when he'll be able to play regularly is not set in stone.

"I don't think there's any set date," Nady said Thursday. "It's all going to be a day-by-day process, when I feel comfortable or when I'm capable of throwing certain distances. But I think that was just a random date kind of thrown out there. Obviously, I'm the one that will be able to have the most input."

Piniella said the June 1 date was what he'd been told by Cubs trainer Mark O'Neal. Nady still will be able to start the season with the Cubs, but they don't feel he can play the outfield more than a couple times a week in the early going.

But Nady said he thinks he can still play outfield if his elbow is at 85 percent strength. Nady had elbow reconstruction surgery last season with the Yankees.

I love the idea of Nady out there, but if they know he's got a bum flipper, they're gonna run on him all day. He's gonna have to catch every ball on the fly, or flip it to Marlon Byrd to throw in! Yikes!

I would hate to see the Cubs trade Colvin for just middle-relief, especially considering they got John Grabow for two borderline MLB pitchers and a low minor leaguer. I wouldn't want them to trade a former first round draft pick for a Frasor or someone like that. Plus you are going to need someone to take over for Fukudome soon. Unless he improves at the plate this year, I could see them trying to move him and clear off as much of the final year of his contract as they can. Unless they make another pick up or someone else progresses through the minors quickly, I would think that Colvin would be the top internal choice to take over in right once Fukudome leaves. That's why I'd rather see him playing at AAA every day to start the 2010 season. You can always make due with one of the young arms early in the season and pick up a relief pitcher over the summer when teams start falling out of the race.

If it wasn't for this elbow thing, Nady would (and should) be starting over Fukodome. He's 10 times the hitter Fukodome is. That will become apparent later this summer.

Xavier is a veteran, he knows his body best. My guess. Lou plays him sparingly, mostly as a pinch hitter and late inning replacement until he is fully healed.

As for Colvin. I would expect him to stick. They will no doubt be audioning him as trade bait. Expect him to be moved for relief help.

They could not put Nady in AAA because Nady doesn't have any minor league options left. They could put him on the DL and have him go on a rehab assignment, but he could only stay down there for a couple weeks at most. Sam Fuld better make the team now, as he is the only one left in camp who can play all three outfield positions. Tyler Colvin maybe can too, but I'd rather see him get regular at bats at AAA instead of 3 or 4 a week riding the bench at the major league level.

Then start him at triple A!
