Former Bear Jason McKie is on his way to St. Louis today for a free-agent visit with the Rams, according to a source close to the player.
The Bears released the veteran fullback Tuesday. He was signed through 2011 and due to make a base salary of $760,000 this season and $775,000. It was a mutual parting, with new Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz installing a system that doesn't utilize a traditional fullback and McKie not wanting to stick around without a role.

Releasing McKie Tuesday gave the veteran an opportunity to find a new
home well before the season rather than being cut during training camp.
McKie, who turns 30 in May, said he does not have any animosity toward the Bears, although he was confused about his decreased role last season. He originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Eagles and spent seven seasons with the Bears after one season with the Cowboys.
"There's no place like Chicago," McKie told the Tribune Tuesday. "The fans, the city ... and just wearing the same helmet that Walter Payton did was so special. Playing for coach (Lovie) Smith, he's just a great man and a great person. He really taught me a lot."
Mike Karney is currently the starting fullback for the Rams. If McKie signs, he would be asked to clear holes for star running back Steven Jackson.
