Bobcats poised to sign guard Livingston

By K.C. Johnson

LAS VEGAS -- Shaun Livingston has agreed to a two-year deal worth roughly $7 million, which was first reported by the Charlotte Observer.

Livingston had been on the Bulls' radar as a backup point guard, which they currently don't have on their roster. With roughly $5-6 million of salary-cap space currently remaining while $7 million is tied into an offer sheet for J.J. Redick, the Bulls are exploring many free-agent options.

These include -- but are not limited to -- Brad Miller, Kurt Thomas, Raja Bell, Ronnie Brewer and Josh Howard. The Bulls are still seeking additional big man depth, a backup point guard and a wing defender.

They currently have eight players under contract -- nine if the Magic don't match the Redick offfer sheet by the Friday deadline.

it's a good idea about shaq being the insurance big man, but i dont think shaq would buy into that. financially, its not logical to get shaq. he's goin to eat up all the money the bulls left. if bulls sign him, then bulls will only get 1 player instead of getting 2-3 players. bulls need to sign key players that know their role & will do it good. bulls can get past those other bigs in the east if they play team defense. isn't that the new coach is known for being defensive kinda of coach? im pretty sure the coach has a lot of defensive schematics that he can run on the team. bulls need quick, athletic players that can help out on defense, rotate and stuffs like that. all-in-all bulls need a team that buys into the coach system.

key players:
++josh howard, i would really endorse this guy
++matt barnes, he's up there in my list, he's quick enough to help out & he's tough
++shannon brown, very athletic, explosive, can play multiple position
++josh powell, he's a long shot guy, he'll probably re-sign with the lakers so is shannon brown

Adam - I almost cussed when I saw:

Tracy Mcgrady
Adam Morrison
Allen Iverson

And I hope McGrady goes to Miami. It would guarantee their failure.

Matt Barnes, Shaq, Oberto, Scola and Kurt Thomas are the only players I am interested in. Bulls have to deal with these giant front lines on the top teams. Shaq doesn't have to start be a beast for us. We just need him to deal with big baby, perkins, Andrew Bynum, Howard and Illgauskis. He is just big man insurance. The team in the east that builds its front line is going to come out of the East and face the lakers.

Matt Barnes is an athlete, he can run, pass and defend. And he is LONG. That is what Rose needs in the back court.

so we are not getting shaun livingston or raja bell (oh well) they wouldn't make sense on the team anyways i think the bulls should take a chance on ronnie brewer, matt barnes or josh howard two of those 3 would be great and if it worked out they could trade Luol Deng for a better shooter who knows with all of these players the bulls are getting maybe they can trade one along with deng and james johnson to get carmelo or even BRANDON ROY who would be great for the bulls and a back court of Roy & Rose would though to beat

can everyone agree that the bulls should stay away from these 3 players!

Tracy Mcgrady
Adam Morrison
Allen Iverson

i don't think bulls need a superstar like the trio in miami. it would be nice to have a wade/lebron type of player, but i think bulls need players that would fit in. key players that would do their job night in/night out. bulls need to have a team with good chemistry, bulls need to have a good coach with a good system. look at the spurs when they were winning championship, we know duncan can play. we dont know much of manu and parker at that time, all we know is that they can play. spurs played within the system & they got the rings. when Detroit won the championship couple years back, they didn't have a wade/lebron kind of player. they have key players that can really play and know their roles. they got the job done.

Worried about the money? Why would I worry about how much the Bulls spend, tekioko? It's not my money. Livingston took over successfully as the Wizards' starting PG in the last 2 mos of the past regular season when Arenas was out. It's funny you mention Livingston's injury history while bringing up Ronnie Brewer when he didn't even finish last season because of an injury! Plus, the Grizzlies didn't even bother extending him a $3.5 million qualifying offer to stay with the team, so what does that tell you? Is the guy still hurt or not worth at least $3.5 million? Or how about the fact that the Bulls had a chance to draft either Ronnie Brewer or Rajon Rondo in the 2006 draft, but instead TRADED UP in that draft to select Thabo Sefalosha in lottery territory who is no longer on the team? And now you'd like the Bulls to possibly overpay the guy as an outside free agent while they missed out on drafting and retaining him at a cheaper price? Just not smart and poor drafting. Where in Bulls history have they ever successfully sign an elite top tier outside free agent? Tell me, tek. If you bring up Ben Wallace as your only example in the last 20 years of Bulls history, then the debate ends and you lose, period.

Bottom line, going into this Summer's free agency with all the moves that the Bulls have made in practically TANKING the last 3 seasons to free up cap space, trading away Salmons and Hinrich, giving away guys like Shannon Brown for NOTHING in return, penny pinching on a rookie head coach, etc.... EXCUSE ME if I expected to at least land any of the top not 3, but at least the TOP 5 free agents this Summer and we came away with none of them. Boozer is fine as a consolation prize, but wasn't among the top 5 free agents this Summer. Top 10, yes, but not top 5. So regardless of all the excuses and the undeniable exception of losing out on the 3 clowns in Miami, the Bulls will have come away with Boozer and complimentary pieces in what was supposed to be a bonanza 2010 class. Sorry tek, as a long time die hard fan, I'm not gonna accept that as satisfactory.

I apologize for being negative but this offseason started with so much optimism the chance to build another dynasty and it all got Crushed.

To the other guy marcus camby re upped with the blazers he's not a FA

Also McGrady wants to play for miami and as we see they get whoever the hell they want.McGrady is nothing but a bench player at this point if he cares about winning he goes to miami or the lakers if he wants to get paid and pad his stats the bulls it is

The bulls should target Marvin Williams... he has more upside than Deng offensively and Defensively... and it would allow the bulls to play a "Smaller" line up that's fast... but it would be much bigger than the small line ups the bulls used to use.

@edgar: 2 yrs for $7 million isn't that cheap. if you're worried about money, there are cheaper backup PGs who don't have livingston's injury history.

@alan: we can play the what if game all day, with any team. it gets us nowhere, so please kill that noise. putting livingston in the same sentence as the other 3 is ludicrous.

@mattchew: who have we really missed out on? aside from the miami trio all the of the bulls needs are still out there. examples:

backup point guard: law, will bynum, nate robinson
defensive wing player: ronnie brewer, matt barnes, keith bogans
big man off the bench: brad miller, kurt thomas, jamaal magloire

also just because the local media isn't reporting on them doesn't mean the bulls aren't in pursuit. personally i'd like to see them get bynum, brewer, and thomas, along with redick.

We'll get Brewer, Will Bynum(Detroit), Matt Barnes

Livingston would have chosen the Bobcats anyway... he can compete for a starting job there plus 2 years $7 million is probably more than what the Bulls want to pay for a guy that will play 10-15 minutes a game

I have to agree with Edgar of course they tried in free agency but like all the other moves that never pan out the Bulls management just can't deliver when it comes to free agents and trades. Our backup PG options are dwindling to nothing. Nate Robinson would be worth a look but he's gonna be gone to Boston soon. Then theres Shannon Brown but he won't come here after we didn't give him any PT when he was here. After that whats left Acie Law? Hopefully we get Raja Bell cause he plays D and hits 3s but he probably would rather go to LA and get a ring. Marcus Camby would be a good backup center / PF why aren't we looking at him?

Wade,bosh,lebron,shaun livingston miss,miss,miss,miss,miss

Just think where the bulls would if they didnt luck up in that 2008 lottery.Just put that in perspective

Ah geez, always slow to pull the trigger. Livingston would have been a very nice cheap alternative to back up Rose and GarPaxDorf missed out on another one again. Josh Howard made over $10 million in salary last year. No way will that guy take a pay cut to play for the Bulls. No way. Raja Bell is fine, but he's 34 years old and he's reportedly being courted by the Lakers. Hmm, somehow I don't see the Bulls winning that battle. So much for attacking free agency quick! After 3 long seasons of slashing payroll, firing coaches and gutting the roster, only Boozer and Korver so far this Summer, yet hey, let's all applaud the Bulls for trying right? Unbelievable. Why do I have the feeling that the Bulls are sitting back waiting to scrape the bottom of the barrel?
