SEATTLE -- Manager Ozzie Guillen hoped that Gavin Floyd could pitch deep Wednesday night, and not just match Seattle ace Felix Hernandez.

With Thursday serving as a day off, Guillen wanted to give a rest to relievers Matt Thornton and J.J. Putz.

"Those guys have had a lot of action the last week," Guillen said.

Floyd threw seven scoreless innings, but Seattle rallied for a 2-1 win in 11 innings on Franklin Gutierrez's two-run single with one out off closer Bobby Jenks. The Sox had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning on Omar Vizquel's two-out single. Vizquel's hit scored Gordon Beckham, who hit a double off Brandon League with one out.

Erick Threets pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings and was in line for his first major league win until Jenks blew the save.

Floyd allowed five hits and struck out six, but Hernandez didn't allow a hit after Gordon Beckham's single with one out in the second and lasted eight innings.

The Sox caught a break in the ninth when umpire Jeff Nelson ruled that Juan Pierre eluded Chone Figgins' tag on a steal attempt, although television replays showed that Pierre was tagged.

Nevertheless, Alex Rios flied to center and Paul Konerko struck out against closer David Aardsma.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Mariners put runners at first and second with one out. Pinch hitter Milton Bradley hit a broken bat fly down the right field line. Andruw Jones made a diving catch and made an underhand throw on his knees to first base to double off Jose Lopez, who broke from first on the play.

Before the game, Guillen said he preferred to give relievers Matt Thornton and J.J. Putz a rest because of their heavy workload recently.

As far as why we have Teahen? Well, last year during one damn series, he got hot and killed us, but apparently he hasn't killed anybody since.

Sometimes these GM's can't see any farther than the end of their noses. That's why I say, "leave things alone, we are doing OK for being a team from Chicago." LOL

Sir Dragon of Mulberry

After Jenks had that screw inserted in his arm everything changed. The Sox outsmarted themselves and didn't deal him after a few years ago when he had some value. These GMs see what we see. They listen to what fans who watched this clown night in and night out say about him. There are additions by subtractions and unfortunately Jenks, Teahen and to a degree Linebrink fall into that category.

I continue to be puzzled by the Teahen trade.
And you don't weaken a vulnerable team by dealing the few strengths you have. I am sick and tired of hearing the Sox won't deal with Boras. There are reasons why he has the cream of the crop. If the Sox want to be known as an elite organization they need to start acting like one. Go after these guys in free agency. Trading Beckman and Hudson is out of the question unless you're bringing me a signed and seal Albert Pujols!

Jenks has lost it. Without a curveball he is too easy to zero in on. Bye! Bye! Jenks.

fat bobby's stats are very misleading this year. lets face
.................

Not true, his ERA of 5 is a very accurate number for him. Save totals have no meaning and never have.

fat bobby's stats are very misleading this year. lets face
the fact that the c in closer has to go. thanks for 05
bobby.

Bobby Jenks has to go. I'm tired of watching a game for 3 hours and then having this fat bum give it away. Every time he comes in I say " oh sh"t here we go again.

Superdessucke:

No problem with Jenks, just give him away, or tell him not to come back.

Other than that, I have never seen such a dominate pitching staff as the Sox have this year, and with the improved defense, those two things will carry us to the World's Championship.

Our hitting has improved too, and we should have beaten one of the best pitchers in baseball last night and we won't be facing him every game, and I hope we never see Jenks again. How obvious is that.

And anyway, you didn't read my post, you just start posting like I do when I scan yours.

Brave Sir Dragon, no one, my good dear sir, shall trade for de fat man. I hath fear that we beath screwedeth come hath September, and be vanquished from the first within a fortnight.

I'll tell you one thing, it wasn't cheeseburgers that put all that fat on Jenks.

I have seen enough hangovers in my time to know one when I see one, and Jenks coming in Sunday all nervous and sweaty was a classic.

That guy must be a demoralizing factor for this team, I know he is me.

He makes me want to throw up all over my keyboard just like captcha does.

I got an idea. KC has Farnsworth and the cubs have Howery, so I don't see any reason why either one of them would not want Jenks and Linebrink.

We don't need anything for them because all I see is, besides their ridiculous salaries, that they are just taking up a roster spot so it would really pay us if they just stayed home, and Teahen too. Just pay them to stay away.

Just get rid of them and leave the rest of the team alone, especially Hudson! We need him a lot worse than we will ever need Prince Fiedler! Just stop that talk now as it is demoralizing to both the fans and players!

Don't worry about Bobby. It's only his second blown save all year. He's been pretty reliable, converting 20 of 22 save opportunities. Not many other closers can say that.

Dragon 2 on July 22, 2010 6:30 AM

Le Grand:

Of course that's it they pay him big money so they feel they have to use him, and it is nuts!

If I was Reinsdorf I would sell off Jenks and Teahan for $1.98 and pick up the rest myself. They can't help us in any way shape or form and are nothing but a detriment to the team. I hope that these two games don't come back to haunt us next September.

Damn! This team was running so smoothly, and we had those games won, and then in comes Jenks "The Monkey Wrench" and throws us completely out of gear. We survived him once but not twice!

Teahen is a jinx and so is Jenks, if you will excuse the pun. Unload them and keep everybody else and I think we can win this thing.

I don't think I've yet gotten over Sunday's blown game by Jenks, now this. And, as Dragon and others point out, yesterday's "save" should have gone to Omar and Alexei, not Jenks.

I think Ozzie is trapped. I sure feel trapped. By what, you ask? By the combined $14 million payroll for Jinks ($8M) and Linestink ($6M). Kenny simply can't unload these guys, so Ozzie is stuck with them just like the Cubs are stuck with Zambrano, Soriano et al. You pay a player that much money, you tend to use him to get some value in return for your investment--probably the best argument I can think of against long-term mega-contracts, especially for pitchers.

I think it's highly doubtful we can just pass the guy off on some other unsuspecting contender that needs a closer. All major league teams have scouts and I'm sure they all know about Jinks' miniscule strengths and many weaknesses. My best prediction is that he is simply not re-signed by the Sox as a free agent this winter. If some team would just take him on waivers (a'la Alex Rios), I'd say great, that opens up a roster space for a quality starter we *might* be able to get in trade.

I didn't comment on the much-discussed swap of the best young talent in the Sox organisation (Hudson, Beckham, Viciedo and more) for another fat aging player--Prince Fielder--but let me take the opportunity to express my disapproval of that right here, right now. All that potential for a guy who can't field or run, is gaining weight, slowing down, who wants a king's ransom in salary and is only signed for one more year? I'd give the Brewers Torres plus Viciedo, Morel and anyone else they want from the minor league roster, but Hudson and Beckham? Not unless they suddenly prove to the Sox staff that they are never going to be front line players. Obviously the Prince has his fans here, I just don't see that the deal as outlined is equitable for the Sox or gives them a lock on this year's championship. That said, I do want Kenny to fine tune the team with a couple of additions that don't create new holes.

Ah Crap:

You might have something there.
But it isn't the end of the world, we are still 2 1/2 games ahead and we just have to forget this one.

All teams have tough losses,

Sir Dragon of Mulberry
STICK WITH THE SOX

Can still move Jenks and probably get someone decent in exchange. On paper he has 20/22 saves, which could mislead another team that needs a closer and has not followed him closely. Reality is that he has a couple more unofficial blown saves and that he has lost his mojo. Bye bye Bobby. You had a good run here.

Jenks is going to send me into anger management. I don't get why he decided to learn all these new pitches while totally forgetting how to throw the pitches that made him successful: the 100mph heater and 12-6 curveball. He's complete garbage and I can no longer stand the sight of his fat face and stupid goatee.

Send this bum packing before he single handedly costs us our lead in the division

The Twins would like to nominate Bobby Jenks as their closer of the month.

Two amazing plays or it would have been the same Tues.

The only reason that I can think of that he brings Jenks in is that they are paying him big money to close, so he closes.

Jenks is in a league with Kyle Farnsworth and Bobby Howrey.

I wonder how Ozzie "The Dork" is going to explain this disaster to the press?

He over-manages and always has, and has gotten away with it but not tonight.

BOBBY JENKS!!! YOU FAT BASTARD. GO PLAY PING PONG! YOU ARE KILLING THIS TEAM!!!

PNWSoxFan on July 22, 2010 12:31 AM

Maybe Jenks self-esteem would be better if he lost about 80 pounds. Maybe they should fire Herm Schneider and hire Jenny Craig as their new team physician.

Maybe we could trade Jenks for Fielder, Milwaukee needs a closer and we need Prince. I would be OK with that because I think it's a fair deal for both teams.

JENKS = WAIVERS

We faced a very tough pitcher tonight, so what can we do? Floyd was brilliant.

I do not think that this team needs to pick up anybody, we just need to get rid of somebody.

Sir Dragon of Mulberry
STICK WITH THE SOX

Jenks has nothing. His fastball has dropped off and his splitter is crap. Time to seek a consistent closer. You can hear it in Hawk's voice as he knows these L's will end up being huge come October and giving them away like this is sickening. Tonights blown save hurt but the one against Minny Ha Ha was a dagger. Ozzie needs to get his head outta his u know what and sit that lard. Give the ball to Putz until Jenks can prove he can get an OUT

Chuck M

I would think so, but one thing is for sure he is the losing pitcher, and "The Dork" is the losing manager.

And another thing is for sure and it is not 2nd guessing on anybody's part because if there is anybody that posts on this board that thinks he should have put Bobby in, then I would like to hear it, because it sure wasn't me.

At that point in the game he was the last pitcher I would have gone to.

This is a tougher loss than Sundays. DAMN!

4 hits won't cut it.
And Jenks sucks, let's not forget that.

It's about time for JJ, Bobby is BAD!

2 out of 2 for idiot ozzie and jenks, unreal

I'll say one thing Jenks brings excitement to the game, but I do not blame him for this loss, he doesn't put himself in, Ozzie "the dork" does, so don't blame this loss on Jenks blame it on "the Dork".

I wonder if Lou Piniella is looking for a job?

Bobby,,,Bobby,,,Bobby

Isn't it about time to make Putz the closer?

Just checking - unlike Sunday, this does officialy count as a blown save for Bobby, right?
