The White Sox acquired right-handed pitcher Edwin Jackson from Arizona on Friday for right-hander Daniel Hudson and minor-league lefty David Holmberg.
It appears that the Sox will not use Jackson as a chip to get slugging first baseman Adam Dunn from the Nationals.
"As I told (Jackson), I can't give anybody any promises that are concrete promises that are written in pen," GM Kenny Williams said. "Even when I tell someone, here's what's going on, I still have to preserve that one percent chance, five percent or whatever it is, that something will materialize to make the whole better.
"So (I told him) even though you're going to hear your name bantered about in the next 24 hours in a three-way deal . . . if I had my choice, this would be something that you plan on pitching Tuesday or Wednesday."
Hudson's scheduled Friday start against Oakland will be taken by Lucas Harrell, who was 9-9 with a 4.24 ERA in 22 starts for Class AAA Charlotte. He has been in the Sox's farm system for seven years.
According to the Washington Post, Dunn said Friday he thinks it's 50-50 he will be traded and he'd be OK with serving as a designated hitter for the rest of this season. "It's just two months," Dunn said.
Jackson threw a no-hitter against Tampa Bay on June 25, but is just 1-3 with a 6.85 ERA since then. An All-Star in 2009, he is 6-10 on the season with a 5.16 ERA. For his career with the Dodgers, Rays, Tigers and D'backs, the 26-year-old is 44-49.
One major-league scout believes that pitching coach Don Cooper, who has built a reputation for fixing talented pitchers who have struggled, could improve Jackson.
A National League scout who recently saw Jackson said his fastball was clocked at 97 mph but said his struggles have stemmed from a lack of command.
''On good days he's a No. 2 starter,'' the scout said. ''When he doesn't have command, he's a No. 5.''
As a result, Jackson has learned to use his fastball as a set-up pitch for his change-up.
''He can throw his slider for strikes, but it all depends on whether he can get his fastball over with consistency,'' the scout added.
Hudson, considered the most major league-ready Sox prospect, had replaced Jake Peavy in the starting rotation but had struggled in two of his three starts.
Holmberg, 19, was the second round draft choice of the Sox in June 2009 and was 3-3 in his brief minor league career.
The non-waiver trade deadline is 3 p.m. Central on Saturday, and talks regarding Dunn could go to the last minute.

I don't like the deal and clearly to judge Hudson on three starts this year is unfair. I think he would have been fine. I also did not like the McCarthy/Danks and Freddy/Floyd trades. I was wrong on both counts. I did not like either Gio Gonzales???? trades and I think I was right on that one. I hope Jackson works out, his ability is beyond question and he is still young. Pitchers can take time to develop and it's ok by me if this guy can find form about now. Guys who the Sox let go from their system who have had an impact include Chris Young, John Rauch, Guerra??? with the Twinks, the above mentioned Gio Gonzo, Clayton Richards and Chad Bradford in recent years. I agree with one of the posters in that it is going to be interesting and fun to watch.
I don't like the move, but Kenny Wiliams is the best (and most underrated) GM in baseball. He knows what he's doing...I am through second guessing his genius, and have full faith that whatever moves he makes, will make the W Sox better...AS

I like the move because they need starting pitching. Garcia has already thrown more innings this year than he did the last two years combined. He won’t stand up as a No. 4 starter. Also look back at the players KW has traded from his minor league system and find me one that has ended being a difference maker. You won’t. At this point I am in the Don Cooper business and I believe he will get the most out of Jackson if they keep him.

Why repost the exact same thing you threw out here a few hours ago? That's kind of weird

No way I believe the Sox trade any of their starting rotation, regardless of what ESPN says. That staff is their only edge over the Twins. Kenny may be bold but not crazy.
I'm still waiting on that Gavin Floyd trade ESPN reported. Maybe they should stick to airing reruns of "The Decision" instead of speculating on trade rumors.
I thought the city didn't want us to do business with the state of Arizona. Oh well.

For this year, Jackson is an upgrade over Hudson. I don't trust Freddy enough for him to be more than a 5th starter, even with the year he's had. Hudson isn't a 4th starter, but Jackson certainly could be. I think they're a better team today than they were yesterday.
As for the future, who really knows?
Wow! Good to see there are still a lot of Sox fans out there.
There are also a lot more things to worry about than whether Williams made the right move.
I also don't think you move a pitching prospect for a proven has-been.
That said, "Will it make a difference? Will it be the difference between winning a division title (won't impact the playoffs, I'm pretty sure) and not?"
It will be fun finding out. Enjoy the ride, Sox fans.

Jackson is 1-3 in his career against the Twins with a 7.76 ERA in eight appearances (five starts). The White Sox and Twins play each other nine more times. bad move
Richard. Relax! You may not like someone else's post because you think your knowledge of baseball is superior to another's, but to personally attack the other person is unacceptable! I am sure there are many, many folks whose knowledge of baseball is just as good as yours.
I had hoped the Sox would get a solid, not marginal, starting pitcher. I had hoped they would do so without giving up Hudson. I had also hoped they serve ice cream in Hell, now I'm afraid I won't be getting any.
And, who is L. Harrel, the announced starting pitcher for the Sox in tonight's game?
Help me figure this out: Phillie gets Oswalt for prospects PLUS $11 million to pay his salary from Houston, and we get this deal?
I encouraged Kenny to pull the trigger, but he just might have shot himself in the foot. Coop is going to have to work magic with "base on balls dispenser" Jackson. Stranger things have happened.
@Ronnie10: "The Sox wouldn't even have to consider Dunn if they'd have kept Jim Thome." Are you baseball retarded? Thome's back is jell-o. Dunn is lightyears younger than him. Thome cannot play a position, whereas Dunn can. Stop posting comments if your baseball knowledge stems from the media only. Use your brain, for God's sake. Think before you write. And by the way, ladies: Floyd isn't being traded anywhere, so keep your panties on.
Jackson had the worst no hitter ever.
----
AJ Burnett walked 9 in his no hitter when he was with the Marlins.
-----
The worst no hitter luck ever happened to me when I was with the Yankees. I managed to no hit the White Sox, but also managed to take the 4-0 loss thanks to 5 walks and 3 errors behind me(all runs unearned).
If Torres wasn't called up for tonights game I have a feeling he will be pitching in Houston next week. We owe Oakland for last week. Let's sweep.
Look for A Rod to fail a drug test today and for an announcement from MLB soon. If he goes for 50, it changes everything as far as who you thought was going to be traded.
i like this so far... but do not trade gavvy!! btw - keep posted on developments at www.soxandthecity.net

People keep saying kenny has a ring, kenny has a ring, um the reality is the sox got lucky once in 100yrs. Boo yah!!

Kenny was GM for all 100 of those years? And the Sox don't only have 1 World Series in 100 years. You need to check your research.
Good Lord! I thought the Sox wanted to WIN games!!!
Kenny Williams did what he does and that pull the trigger and go all in! This is not a sorry baseball team that is always talking about next year. This is the WHITESOX and winning is all we talk about EVERY year. I trust Kenny more than I do my bank!
And Ozzie is the same way. Nobody liked his brand of baseball until July! But Ozzie knows better than Bo does.
Ozzie and Kenny are like Mortimer and Randolph Duke and all they have to say are two words....."WERE BACK"!!!
Mavis! Lets Do It Again in 2010!

I enjoy all the people keyboard quarterbacking KW, the GM who's team has won 33 of their last 44 games and are in first place. Yeah, you guys know better than him, that's why you're typing away and he's negotiating trades. You guys are probably the same guys who flipped out when we traded McCarthy for Danks, or Freddy for Floyd.
Yeah, eveyone get off your keyboards and do some work. Internet blog sites are not for stating your opinions. Unless of course your this guy!
-----
Ol, Dumbo, you're making my point for me with your post (please notice the usage of "you're" versus "your", that seems to be lost on you).
Anyway, the point is quite simply that KW is the man with a ring and a team that's won 33 of their last 44. For people to be jumping down his throat for this move, is just ridiculous. I wasn't a fan of the Peavy or Pierre trades, but the fact of the matter stands that the Sox are in first place right now. Had Kenny not made those trades, best case scenario.....we'd still be in first place. Not all trades work out, but some work magic (see McCarthy for Danks, Freddy for Floyd).
"you're" = you are
"your" = possessive term
I am banking on Coop working some magic on this guy. I would rather keep him than try to obtain Dunn. We coulda kept Thome for the same headaches/production. On the flipside, Coop won't have a lot of time and Jackson's numbers look pretty bad, over 5 ERA and that in the national league too. Oh well!
People freaked out when KW traded McCarthy, but that has worked out well. I don't understand this move, though. I hope there is more to it. Jackson had the worst no hitter ever.
Keep dealin' Kenny...
p.s. I think I'd prefer Berkman over Dunn, in case you're listening Kenny...
it don't matter who they bring in, they won't be able to measure up to the yankee's they might make it to the first round but thats it, loosing hudson was a poor decision kenny. Your fired!
Damn!
I was really looking forward to Hudson pitching tonight, isn't third time a charm?
I hope Kenny hasn't picked up another sore arm pitcher, but I guess only time will tell about that.
If he trades off Gavin Floyd, which I doubt, I think I will go over and cry with the cubs.
Sir Dragon of Mulberry
STICK WITH THE SOX
I can't see why White Sox fans don't like this trade.
Forget the $. GM's like this guy & there always seems to be demand for him. It's $ KW can wiggle out of it. If we keep him he is a definite improvement over Hudson right now at the 5th spot. Hudson was shaky to the point he couldn't be counted on for innings much less quality starts. With Jackson, you at least get an innings eater in that spot. More importantly though, Garcia has looked shaky in 2 starts now so Jackson is insurance that if Garcia breaks down the team can at least fill out it's playoff rotation with established starters.
If we don't keep him then KW's strategy paid off. Jackson was the key piece sought by both the Nats & the Stros in trying to secure their LH power bats. Those teams are more likely to take to KW longer now. KW can use cash to help turn the deal as well. All of this was not possible with just Hudson to bargain with.
Jackson is a talented pitcher that loses focus, he gets himself in good situations then will just throw one down the middle. He also always folds in big spots, get some runners on base he never gets the big out needed. He'll be better in Chicago but he's not worth the price tag.

What a stupid trade! Why did Williams trade away one of the White Sox's best young prospects for a journeyman pitcher? Edwin Jackson is 6-10 with an ERA over 5! And now we have to pay this bum $8 million next year? This trade defies logic.
KW is NOT done - just a gut feel is all
Hate to see Hudson go, but to win this year maybe it's the best. Hope we don't give up much for Dunn, since if we wanted a power hitter from the left side who strikes out a lot, we could have kept Thome.
Maybe KW should think about extending Paulie now, rather than trading Sales and Danks next year to get a right hand hitting first baseman with power......

Worst trade ever... We now 12 guys under contract for next year for over 70 million, and that doesn't include Danks, Jenks, Quentin, or Pena who are arbitration eligible...
I think it is a great move. Jackson has a power arm, which the Sox love. Plus he is only 26. Coop will fix him so he will throw strikes. Remember, last year he was an All-Star with Detroit. This year he no-hit the Rays. He has the stuff to be another Coop project like Danks, Floyd and Thornton, all past #1 picks whose original team gave up on. When I see Hudson, I think Brandon McCarthy, where is he today. Go Sox!!
Great move, now add a DH and keep their players healthy and the White Sox have an easy ride through another World Series win. Obviously, unlike me, all the know nothings and anti-White Sox fans have and will continue to chime in on how bad this deal is. Good job Kenny, maybe Brad Pitt will play you in a movie one day.
ronnie10 - At least Dunn can score from second on a single.
Is Jackson really an impact pitcher? Don't think so.
If Jackson is sent to Washington for Dunn, who will be the 5th starter?
If Dunn comes to the Sox, who is out? Teahen? Kotsay? Can either of them be traded for a pitcher? Probably. A good pitcher? Probably not.
I'd rather have Andrew Jackson than Edwin Jackson.
Jackson is a big leaguer with good stuff that he needs to harness. Dan Hudson is a AAAA starter with only 2 pitches and can't get past the 5th inning with the Sox. Like him or not, Jackson is a solid upgrade over Hudson at this point and pushes Freddy back to 5th.
The Kenny better lay off the boilermakers. This guy Jackson has given up at least 4 runs in his last 5 starts and lost four of them. He's a bum. Hudson is young and has promise although he looked bad in his last outing. Kenny has been waiting until the last minute to pull the trigger and he ended up shooting himself in the foot. Terrible trade.
The Sox wouldn't even have to consider Dunn if they'd have kept Jim Thome. What were they thinking? And to even think about Floyd for Dunn is totally Angelo-esque!
The problem with this trade is that Jackson is not very good and 8.5 mil next year, this makes no sense.
Oh get real everyone - KW is not going to trade Gavin Floyd (cheap and under contract for several more years) for Dunn (free agent who walks at end of year) and gut the starting pitching staff. Anyone who believes that rumor isn't using their brain.
I kind of like the Jackson move - it reminds me a bit of the Thornton and Floyd acquistions. He has MLB experience that Hudson does not have, he is an innings eater with over 150 IP in each of the past three years so he plugs the hole in the 5 spot. So if they keep him, Coop must believe that he can tweak Jackson and reduce the walks.
If they flip Jackson to the Nats for Dunn, then KW must have another pitching candidate up his sleeve to fill the 5 spot. I don't think that it will be Torres from AAA.

I am a Sox fan, but that is funny....
great move! Hudson will be an ok pitcher, but coop will turn Jackson around! Now let's get after Berkman or Dunn. Kenny's not getting rid of Gavin unless it's for someone like Evan Longoria. He won't give up our best pitcher down the stretch. Gavin is signed for a couple more years and relatively cheap and still young! Kenny just keeps proving he's one of the best GM's in he game! I wonder why Harrell is up and not Carlos Torres? Hmmmmm... I think Jackson is staying and the Nats will probably take Torres, Jordan Danks, and player to be named later (Chris Sale?) for Dunn.
It was a good move. Why eveyone has got such a hard on for Dunn must have him in fantasy baseball. The guys a cancer, can't run, strikes out 1 out of 3 at bats and is a .250 lifetime hitter. We needed another starter. Hudson showed he wasn't the guy. We get some good starts out of Jackson and win the division by 10 games.

what is ESPN saying about floyd?
.....That he is rumored to be going to DC for Dunn and somebody I never heard of.
what is ESPN saying about floyd?
I can't say I know too much about Jackson, but he looks like an overpaid acquistion with a consistently horrendous ERA. Yikes. I hope he's getting shipped elsewhere.
They're saying Floyd for Dunn and a prospect now. I sure hope that's wrong or is Kenny selling again because he knows something is wrong with Floyd?
Why would you give up your number one young prospect for a nobody never has been. Jackson is awful! Look at his ERA this guy stinks. KW what are you smoking! Have you lost your mind! These types of moron moves only puts you on a par with that other idiot Bears GM Jerry NO JUDGE OF TALENT ANGELO. I suppose G. Floyd is the next to be given away for nothing.
No way they can trade Gavin...he's been amazing. This would shock the staff in a bad way. Keep the pitching Kenny and stay away from Dunn.
Horrid move and now they're talking about trading Floyd? Williams has lost his mind. Is this guy on the Twins payroll? Like I said before, they have to become players in free agency with the kind of farm system they have. You can't keep trading away key components of your 25 man roster. Williams fixes on hole by creating 3 others.
How I long for the day a real owner with real money and real commitment takes over both the Sox and the Bulls.
Jackson is the kind of pitcher everyone likes until they see him pitch a few times.
Coop has a talent for turning around young pitching that lacks or lost confidence.....Floyd, Danks and Thornton. The talent is there with Jackson, the question is can Coop turn him into a reliable 4-5 this year.
I'm inclided to keep Jackson and go after a Berkman or Hawpe.
This feels alot like Alex Rios to me...underachieving, talented. If he works out great for the next two months, I could not be happier. And just think...if Peavy is healthy next year, imagine the nefarious things Kenny could do with Edwin as trade bait!!!!
I love how the article calls him a "16-year old", like someone subtracted 1983 from 2009 (his last bday) and got 16.
ESPN is saying that Gavin Floyd is gone next, WTF is going on?
They are now saying it's Gavin Floyd going for Adam Dunn.
I still think adding Dunn makes the team worse. I hope if they do flip Jackson it's for another starter or bullpen help. How about selling Teahan for something? He's now VERY expendable with Viciedo and Lillibridge playing well.
As a Twins fan I would like to thank Kenny Williams for todays move.
not a surprise. Kenny has had his eyes on Edwin ever since he was a 20 yr old prospect with the Dodgers. Good trade--- good arm, whether they flip him or keep him, much more upside than Hudson, another Brandon mcCarthy. Good going Kenny!
Jackson had better be the second coming of the big unit when he went to the Astros years ago. Is Williams done supplying the National League with good young talent? Gosh - I hope so.
There's no way they keep a guy like Jackson, it makes no sense. He's not very good, he couldn't even handle the NL West and now he would move to the Cell? Come on. But why would the Nats want him? He makes a ton of money and isn't very good?
He had good numbers in Detroit last year because he was ridiculously hit-lucky for half the season, which is why he made the All-Star team. He's not better than Hudson and he costs far more. I have to think this is to flip Jackson elsewhere to someone who really likes him. If this was actually for Jackson, the Sox should have made 'Zona pay some of the salary -- pure salary dumps shouldn't include a guy like Hudson in the trade.
Goodbye Jackson, hello Dunn.
Bad move.
Jackson definately has a higher ceiling than Hudson. I highly doubt Hudson ever achieves the numbers spinorama provided in his post.
But, at the same time time, Jackson comes at much higher hit to the payroll. Time will tell.
God, please tell me we aren't keeping Jackson, this guy sucks.
Hey VMV, I think you need to check the stats again, but don't let that get in the way of your assessment. 13-9 and an All-Star last year with very good numbers for Detroit. Pretty good for TB two year ago at 14-11. Fairly bad this year except for that no-hitter of course, but remember that AZ defense is one of the worst in the league.
Bad move, but I'm guessing this is only part of it. I hope so.
I agree. The walks is what really bothers me. The guy is ranked 3rd in the NL in walks. I hope KW knows what he's doing on this one. Sending a prospect like Hudson away for a rental like Dunn is scary.
Let's hope they want nothing to do with Jackson, this guy has gone steadily downhill for a few years and couldn't even handle pitching in the NL West.
I'm hoping this is just a stop ans Jackson is on his way to another team today.
