LAS VEGAS -- No. 1 draft pick Jared Mitchell will undergo surgery on his left ankle next week and could miss what would have been his first full professional season after colliding with the wall while making a catch against the Angels.

Mitchell, who was taken from the field on a cart, was diagnosed with a posterior tib tear on the upper inside of the ankle. No recovery time will be set until after the surgery.

"Very, very bad," manager Ozzie Guillen said."It's a shame. He has to use his speed.

"It's going to cost him a year at least. The kids is still young. Unfortunately, this happened to him."

Reassigned to the minor league camp two days ago, Mitchell was recalled because the Sox needed players for the split squad games. He had just entered the game as a defensive replacement.

Rose leaves game vs. Magic with sprained wrist

By Fred Mitchell

The Bulls trailed 28-17 to the Orlando Magic at the end of the first period Thursday night.

More troubling was the fact that All-Star guard Derrick Rose was knocked to the floor by Magic center Dwight Howard and sprained his left wrist.

He remained in the game for the final 55 seconds of the first period. But he was taken to the locker room at the end of the quarter. CSN is reporting Rose will have x-rays. He will not return tonight.

Bears seal deal with Taylor; Peppers next up

Chester Taylor likely will be the Bears' starting running back next season. (Jeff Wheeler/Minneapolis Star Tribune)

By Brad Biggs

Two down. One to go.

The Bears reeled in their second free agent of the day at Halas Hall as running back Chester Taylor agreed to terms Friday on a contract that likely will make him the favorite to be the starter while also weakening the backfield in Minnesota.

Taylor agreed to a $12.5 million, four-year contract with $7 million guaranteed, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. That's not far off the figures of $14 million in total value and $8 million guaranteed that a league source said the veteran back was gunning for last night.

Taylor flew in this morning along with defensive end Julius Peppers, who is expected to reach an agreement with the team at any moment. Tight end Brandon Manumaleuna had a deal in place for a five-year contract with $6 million guaranteed and a total value of more than $17 million before he landed this morning at O'Hare.

Bears land blocking tight end Manumaleuna

| 38 Comments | BREAKING STORY

manumaleuna-horiz.jpgBy Brad Biggs

Greg  Olsen still could play a role in the Mike Martz offense, but so will one of the better blocking tight ends in the league after the Bears agreed to terms on a contract with free agent Brandon Manumaleuna.

Manumaleuna, who began his career in St. Louis playing for Martz, became the first of what could be multiple free-agent acquisitions for the Bears on Friday. Prized defensive end Julius Peppers will visit Halas Hall, as will running back Chester Taylor, and both could be Bears by the end of the day.

Manumaleuna, who at 6-foot-2 and  295 pounds is the size of an offensive lineman, will sign a five-year contract with the Bears later Friday pending a physical. His signing does not spell the end of Olsen's Bears career, however, but it does cast doubt on the status of veteran tight end Desmond  Clark.

"I played for Mike Martz (in St. Louis) and Lovie Smith was the defensive coordinator. It was a great situation," Manumaleuna told the Tribune on Friday morning at O'Hare Airport after arriving on a flight from Los Angeles. "This team has a chance to be real successful. It was difficult (to leave San Diego). I had a lot of friends and it was close to home, but the business is what it is."

Bears haven't hired Ruskell -- yet

| 1 Comment | BREAKING STORY
By Dan Pompei

A report that said the Bears have hired Tim Ruskell to be their director of player personnel is not accurate, according to a highly placed source.

Not yet, anyway.

The report might be more premature than outright false. Ruskell likely will be hired, probably in the very near future. It would make sense to have in place before the scouting combine kicks off on Thursday.

The Bears learned in 1999 about the dangers of announcing a hiring before it is official when they thought they had Dave McGinnis in place to be their head coach. Word leaked that McGinnis had been hired--except no deal had been struck. McGinnis was offended with how the situation had been handled, and subsequently backed out.

Ruskell stepped down from his role as president of the Seahawks late last season when it became apparent the team was not intending to bring him back in 2010. He worked with Bears general manager Jerry Angelo for 13 years; the two were the primary architects of the Bucs teams that Tony Dungy and Jon Gruden led to postseason success.

The Bears recently fired pro personnel director Bobby DePaul. If he is hired, Ruskell is expected to oversee the pro department as well as the college department, and the Bears likely will name another pro personnel director to replace DePaul.

Bears will raise ticket prices for 2010 season

| 7 Comments | BREAKING STORY
By Brad Biggs

The economy has not come back yet, but a raise in Bears' ticket prices has returned for 2010.

As expected, the Bears announced a hike in ticket prices in some areas of Soldier Field on Friday, marking the eighth time in the last nine years the franchise has raised prices in some form.

There will be no price increase for approximately 25 percent of the seats, the team said, with those seats being in the 400 level and the west grandstand. Non-club seat increases range from $2 to $17, and club seats will be raised from $10 to $20 per ticket.  The Bears non-club ticket prices now range from $68 to $125 and account for approximately 85 percent of the seating at Soldier Field.

Shani Davis wins gold in 1,000 meters

By Brian Hamilton

RICHMOND, British Columbia -- Holding his arms high after a huge final lap, Chicago native Shani Davis became the first man to win two gold medals in the 1,000 meter speedskating race, crossing the line in 1:08.94 at the Richmond Olympic Oval on Wednesday night.

Davis was running just fifth after 600 meters but turned on the jets to become the only participant in the race to break 1 minute 9 seconds. Thus Davis reprised his gold medal win from the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy.

The U.S.'s Chad Hedrick authored a mild surprise with a bronze medal in the race with a time of 1:09.32.

Bulls on the verge of unloading Salmons

| 1 Comment | BREAKING STORY
By K.C. Johnson

NEW YORK -- Bulls management has told John Salmons to remain at the team hotel Wednesday night as it finalizes a trade for the veteran swingman, sources said.

It doesn't appear Salmons will be moving to Houston as part of a Tracy McGrady trade, as the Rockets' demands for multiple draft picks is too high.

Unloading Salmons removes all doubt about him possibly exercising his $5.8 million player option this summer and guarantees that the Bulls will have enough money to offer a maximum contract this summer.

The Bulls have a 6:30 p.m. tipoff against the Knicks, the team they have been vying against in efforts to acquire McGrady.

Bulls make offer for Tracy McGrady

| 1 Comment | BREAKING STORY
tmacblog.jpgBy K.C. Johnson

The Bulls and Knicks didn't just play a game Tuesday night. They're also competing for Tracy McGrady's expiring $22 million contract.

League sources said the Bulls have offered Brad Miller, Tyrus Thomas and either Kirk Hinrich or John Salmons to Houston for McGrady, who has been granted a leave and is training in Chicago.

Houston has shown little interest in either Hinrich or Salmons and thus, sources said, the Bulls have tried to recruit a third team to get involved. It's also possible the Bulls have made another unknown offer with a player replacing Hinrich or Salmons to the Rockets.

Some league sources believe the Bulls' offer is emerging as the front-runner.

Lovie Smith wanted to have his coaching staff filled before the Super Bowl. By staying in-house, he was able to reach his goal.

Smith hired close friend Rod Marinelli, the assistant head coach/defensive line coach, as the Bears defensive coordinator Friday after relieving himself of those duties following a sub-par defensive showing during the 2009 season. Eric Washington, the assistant defensive line coach, will take Marinelli's place in charge of the defensive line.

"I'm very excited," Marinelli told ChicagoBears.com. "The defensive staff has all worked together, so it's just a chance to keep going and build on the subtleties of our system. We've all been in it together and I think the familiarity will help."

Mike Martz hired as Bears' offensive coordinator

martz-mug-left-ap.JPG

By Brad Biggs

The search is over.

Twenty-seven days after the Bears set out to find a new offensive coordinator, they have hired a man who was one of the most logical choices from the start, passing wizard Mike Martz.

Martz will be charged with turning around the Bears' dismal offense and doing it quickly with quarterback Jay Cutler, someone he was pining to work with even during last season

"They hired my main man,'' said running back Kevin Jones, who played under Martz with the Lions. "I love it. He was the best offensive coordinator out there.

"I think it's false information when people say he doesn't run the ball. He just has to have the back who can run the ball and catch the ball. Obviously, he did it with Marshall (Faulk). I did it in Detroit. The one season I was healthy, I had 61 catches in 12 games.''

Cardinals QB Kurt Warner set to retire

Staff report

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner will announce his retirement at a news conference Friday, according to a report by David Kaplan of the Tribune and WGN.

Citing a source close to the situation, Kaplan reports that the 38-year-old quarterback will call it a career despite having led the Cardinals to the Super Bowl last season and back to the playoffs again this season.

The two-time MVP and four-time Pro Bowler has passed for 32,344 yards and 208 touchdowns in a 12-year career with the Rams, Giants and Cardinals.

Warner has expressed health concerns since suffering a concussion -- which was at least the third of his career -- earlier this season.

After attending the annual B.A.T. banquet in New York Tuesday night, Dawson sent the following text to The Tribune:

"Hall will issue a press release (Wednesday) announcing that I will go in as an Expo."

Bears pursuing Vikings QB coach Kevin Rogers

| 8 Comments | BREAKING STORY
By Dan Pompei

The Bears' next target in the offensive-coordinator search is Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Rogers.

The team requested permission to interview Rogers and is awaiting a decision from the Vikings, a source with knowledge of the situation said.  Rogers is believed to have one more year on his contract, and the Vikings can prevent him from interviewing with their rivals if they choose.

Rogers is the second candidate the Bears have targeted from an NFC North rival. They also tried to interview Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements, but the Packers refused to grant him permission to talk to the Bears.

Cubs set to sign outfielder Xavier Nady

| 37 Comments | BREAKING STORY
By Dave van Dyck

The Cubs have agreed to sign free-agent outfielder Xavier Nady, pending a physical exam on his surgically repaired right arm, according to multiple sources.

Nady played in only seven games with the Yankees last season before undergoing a second Tommy John surgery. If he has recovered enough to be able to throw, he reportedly will sign a one-year deal worth up to $5 million with incentives.

The Cubs had been looking for a fourth outfielder and were considering former White Sox Jermaine Dye, Jonny Gomes and Reed Johnson, who filled that role before being injured last season.

Nady, 31, hit .305 with 25 homers and 97 RBI in 2008 with the Pirates and Yankees. With left-handed-hitting Kosuke Fukudome in right and newcomer Marlon Byrd in center, Nady could find plenty of playing time.

Bulls' John Salmons out vs. Clippers; Miller not ill

John Salmons won't play Wednesday against the Clippers, one game after Kirk Hinrich sat with the illness that is spreading through the team. Salmons remained at the team hotel.

However, several sources disputed the team's claim that Brad Miller missed the morning shootaround because he might be getting the illness. Miller, the sources said, merely missed the team bus and will be fined.

Bears hire Mike Tice to coach offensive line

The Bears are bringing Mike Tice to Chicago as their offensive line coach, the Tribune has learned. The team was very aggressive in negotiations and struck a deal quickly.

"I'm excited, really excited," Tice said.

The former head coach of the Vikings had been working in Jacksonville as the assistant head coach/tight ends coach. The Jaguars gave the Bears permission to talk to Tice when it was unclear whether or not their staff would be retained.

Since that time, the Jaguars have decided to retain their coaching staff.

A source said Tice would like to be in the Midwest so he could be closer to his children.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Buffalo Bills interim coach Perry Fewell has been hired as the New York Giants' defensive coordinator.

Coach Tom Coughlin announced the move late Thursday evening after Fewell spent the past few days weighing offers from the Giants and the Bears.

"I am ecstatic to come to work for the New York Giants," Fewell said. "It's a good football team with good defensive players, and it is a franchise known for defense."

Fewell interviewed for the vacant Bills coaching job but he has said for a while that he felt he was a longshot for that position.

Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas has been charged with a felony in connection with last month's locker room confrontation with a teammate.

Arenas was charged Thursday with one count of carrying a pistol without a license.

The charges were filed in D.C. Superior Court in an "information," a document that generally signals a plea deal. His lawyer had no immediate comment.

Arenas has said he kept multiple guns in his locker at the Verizon Center, claiming he wanted to keep them away from his children and didn't know it was illegal.

Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd was cited for underage consumption of alcohol after his involvement in a fight early Jan. 8 in Minneapolis, according to police records obtained by the Tribune.

Floyd is among five "arrestees" listed on a report from University of Minnesota police, who had responded to a call claiming "6-to-10" people" were involved in a "physical dispute in the street." According to the report, Floyd admitted to doing "a couple of shots" earlier in the evening and had blood on his hands, feet and shirt after what Floyd told police was a "physical altercation" at a house party.

DETROIT -- The Bears and Lions played as if they had nothing to lose Sunday. And, in fact, they didn't as the two sub-.500 teams slugged it out in the season finale at Ford Field.

In the end, the Bears prevailed 37-23 behind four Jay Cutler touchdown passes to wind up with a 7-9 record, while the woeful Lions finished 2-14 in spite of a valiant effort against their NFC North rival.

"It just shows that we can play good football," Cutler said.

At the conclusion of a monumentally disappointing season that saw the Bears miss the playoffs for the third straight season, only the future of embattled head coach Lovie Smith remains in doubt.

Cubs agree to three-year deal with Marlon Byrd

The Cubs have agreed to a three-year deal, $15 million deal with free-agent outfielder Marlon Byrd.

Byrd, 32, hit .283 with 20 home runs and 89 RBI in 146 games last season for the Texas Rangers.

This marks the second straight season the Cubs have signed a free-agent outfielder from Texas, and general manager Jim Hendry is confident it will turn out better than the Milton Bradley acquisition.

"He's about as good a guy as you can find in a clubhouse," Hendry told the Tribune today, adding that new Cubs hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo -- who worked with Byrd in Texas -- "really loves him."

In eight major-league seasons, Byrd is hitting .279 with 60 homers.

"(Jaramillo) really thinks he 'got it' the last year or  two, just like (Mark DeRosa) did in Texas," Hendry said.

Milton Bradley: 'I'm ready to move forward'

| 2 Comments | BREAKING STORY
bradleydugout.jpgBy Paul Sullivan

Milton Bradley began his career in Seattle the same way he left Chicago -- angry, unrepentant and defensive.

Bradley declined to talk about his departure in a conference call with Seattle writers, saying: "I'm ready to move forward. I really don't have a statement about Chicago. I'm a Seattle Mariner. Chicago's is a thing of the past. I'm not interested in rehashing old news."

Bradley referred to himself as a "quiet" guy, and said people who criticize him or athletes in general are trying to make names for themselves.

"Pretty much for me, anybody deep down on the inside, looking out or looking in, you understand how PR works and media works, and how people are promoted, and how you have a bad guy and you can have a good guy," he said. "And that's just the way it is. And so I'm portrayed as however I am. It just adds to the mystique, I guess."

Cubs' Hendry takes blame for Bradley fiasco

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry took the blame for the Milton Bradley fiasco, but made the deal with Seattle today to spare the organization of further aggravation.

"In hindsight, it was an acquisition I'm responsible for that didn't work out," he said of Bradley's $30 million deal. "I bear the responsibility for that not working out."

Does Bradley take any of the blame for the nightmarish season? According to one of his close friends, Bradley believes the blame should be 50-50 between himself and the Cubs.

"I would think he would think he should've performed better," Hendry said. "But I can't speak for him."

Milton Bradley traded to Seattle for Carlos Silva

| 42 Comments | BREAKING STORY
bradleytradeblog.jpgBy Dave van Dyck and Paul Sullivan

The Cubs have finally found a taker for Milton Bradley in the Seattle Mariners. Bradley was dealt Friday for pitcher Carlos Silva.

Seattle has agreed to pay the Cubs $9 million. The Mariners pay $6 million of the remaining $25 million on Silva's contract. Bradley is owed $22 million, including incentives, or $3 million less than Seattle owed Silva, so the Cubs get $6 million of salary relief.

Silva has been a disappointment after signing with the Mariners after the 2007 season. He was 4-15 in 28 starts in 2008 and 1-3 in only eight games last year while spending most of the season on the disabled list with a shoulder impingement.

With Bradley out of the picture, the new Cub priorities will be to decide what to do with Silva, sign a center fielder (possibly free agent Marlon Byrd) and shore up the bullpen.

Reports: Halladay to Phillies, Lackey to Red Sox

Staff report

Big-name pitchers are on the move in the major leagues, according to reports from SI.com and ESPN.com.

According to a report by SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Phillies will acquire right-handed pitcher Roy Halladay as part of a three-team trade with the Mariners and Blue Jays in which left-hander Cliff Lee likely will go to Seattle.

Meanwhile, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports that the Red Sox have reached a tentative deal with right-hander John Lackey, pending a physical, on a deal worth slightly more than the five-year, $82.5 million dollar deal A.J. Burnett signed with the New York Yankees last year. Lackey reportedly traveled to Boston for a physical exam today.

The Notre Dame coaching search is over, the vacancy filled by the guy most people expected would get the job all along.

Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly has signed a five-year contract to coach the Irish.

Notre Dame announced the move in a press release on Thursday night. Kelly will be introduced at a 12:30 p.m. Friday press conference at the Guglielmino Athletics Center and will officially take over at Notre Dame on Monday.

"I am very pleased that a thorough and extensive search has led us to a new head coach in Brian Kelly, who I am confident will help us accomplish our goal of competing for national championships," said Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick.

Kelly will not coach Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl. Instead, offensive coordinator Jeff Quinn will coach the No. 4 Bearcats against the No. 5 Florida Gators on Jan. 1.
