Breaking more than a decade of silence, former U.S. soccer coach Steve Sampson said Tuesday he dropped John Harkes from the national team roster two months before the 1998 World Cup because the American captain was having an affair with the wife of teammate Eric Wynalda.

Harkes has long denied having an affair with Amy Wynalda.

Wynalda, who played for the Fire in 2001, brought up the affair Monday night during a discussion on "Fox Football Fone-In" about a scandal in England over an alleged relationship between current English captain John Terry and the former partner of Wayne Bridge, his teammate on the national squad.

Sampson tells The Associated Press he's glad the story is coming out now because it might help people understand what led to the American team's last-place World Cup finish.

corbenbone.jpgBy Jack McCarthy

With holes to fill at midfield and on defense, Fire officials seemed pleased that they found players to help with both at today's Major League Soccer SuperDraft in Philadelphia.

The Fire selected Corben Bone, a 21-year-old playmaking midfielder from Wake Forest, in the first round (13th overall).

Bone, a two-time Hermann Trophy finalist, is a two-time first-team All-American as well as 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference offensive player of the year. The 5-foot 9-inch Plano, Texas native collected 15 goals and 38 assists during a three-year Deacon career. He led the nation in assists in 2008 with 17. He was one of four Wake Forest players selected in the first round.

"I've watched Corben over the last year and a half," Fire Technical Director Frank Klopas said by phone from Philadelphia. "He's a very exciting player and has a lot of ability. He's dynamic, he's skillful and he's got a lot of ability."

The Fire reached into the international coaching ranks Monday, naming former El Salvador national chief Carlos de los Cobos as the franchise's fifth head coach.

De los Cobos, 51, brings more than 30 years of experience as a player and coach in Mexico and Central America. He succeeds Denis Hamlett, who coached the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

"After viewing tapes and seeing (Fire) games, I was able to see a lot of the characteristics of the team from the last couple of seasons," de los Cobos said during a news conference at Toyota Park. "I consider it a solid team, one that was well-ordered and played a very direct game, very frontal game and was very organized from the back. The defense was very strong."

The Fire is expected to introduce former El Salvador coach Carlos de los Cobos as the fifth coach in franchise history Monday at an 11 a.m. news conference at Toyota Park in Bridgeview.

While the Fire has been tight-lipped about the search, de los Cobos told the Mexican newspaper Record that he expected to reach an agreement soon.

"I can't say more because we have promised the management in Chicago that, when there is a decision, it will be confirmed," de los Cobos told the newspaper. "For now, all I can say is that there has been good progress and that the possibilities are growing."

The Fire could announce a new coach as soon as this week, and he may be bringing a player with him.

A Washington Post report  labeled El Salvador coach Carlos de los Cobos as the leading coaching candidate, and the newspaper also reported that he is trying to bring along right-sided midfielder Julio Martinez. Martinez, 24, is under contract with Leon in Mexico, was capped several times by de los Cobos in World Cup qualifying.

Sources close to the Fire said negotiations were underway with a coaching candidate, but that nothing had been finalized. The club has been without a coach since letting Dennis Hamlett go at the end of last season.

The Fire's search for a new coach may be extending outside of the United States.

Published reports on a Mexican news site linked recent El Salvador coach Carlos de los Cobos to the Fire. He announced last week that he would step down after El Salvador failed to qualify for the World Cup.

De los Cobos, 51, has managed teams in the Mexican first and second divisions and led El Salvador, long a CONCACAF also-ran, back to the final round of World Cup qualifying for first time since 1997. After a shocking 2-1 home victory over Mexico in June gave the team hope of reaching South Africa, "La Selecta" lost five of its last six and slumped out of contention.

Cuauhtemoc Blanco trained for the first time with his new club -- the Tiburones Rojos of Veracruz -- today in Mexico, completing an unusual move to a second-division team for the former Fire star.

Under the terms of his new deal, Blanco will be with the club until March. After that he will join Mexico at a training camp to prepare for the World Cup in South Africa.

Blanco practiced with another new team member, forward Reynaldo Navia of Chile.

Blanco finished his three-year contract with the Fire by leading the team to last month's MLS Eastern Conference final.

The Fire has narrowed its list of coaching candidates to succeed the fired Denis Hamlett to two: former D.C. United coach Tom Soehn and longtime Fire midfielder Jesse Marsch, Soccer America reports.

Both have strong ties to the Fire. Soehn and Marsch were players on the 1998 MLS Cup-winning team and Soehn began his coaching career as an assistant for the Fire under Bob Bradley. Marsch played 231 MLS games in midfield for the Fire before being traded to Chivas USA prior to the 2006 season for a first-round draft pick.

The Washington Post reports: The Fire are interested in New York Red Bulls interim coach Richie Williams and are expected to speak with him soon.

Williams name is the second to surface after the Fire reportedly interviewed Real Salt Lake assistant Robin Fraser earlier this week. The club is in the market for a coach after firing Dennis Hamlett following the end of the season.

Williams played eight seasons in MLS for D.C. and New York, winning three championship rings in 216 games. He took over the Red Bulls in August after former Fire coach Juan Carlos Osorio resigned with New York last in MLS. The Red Bulls went 3-3-2 down the stretch under Williams.

However, as Sittler points out, Stoops typically doesn't do job interviews, believing his track record at Oklahoma says it all.
