Dr. John Reed is the president and chief executive officer of the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, a California-based biomedical organization that is opening a branch in Orlando. Reed earned both his medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, where he conducted research and helped oversee a hospital laboratory from 1989 through 1992. He was recruited as a scientist for Burnham in 1992, where he established a research program into the field of apoptosis, or cell death, which is crucial in developing therapies to treat cancer. Reed became Burnham's scientific director in 1995 and was appointed its president and CEO in 2002. He continues to run one of Burnham's largest research laboratories and has authored more than 700 papers during his career. Reed is recognized as one of the world's foremost researchers in apoptosis.
