He was recruited as a scientist for Burnham in 1992, where he established a research program into the field of apoptosis, or cell death, which is crucial in developing therapies to treat cancer. Reed became Burnham's scientific director in 1995 and was appointed its president and CEO in 2002. He continues to run one of Burnham's largest research laboratories and has authored more than 700 papers during his career. Reed is recognized as one of the world's foremost researchers in apoptosis. He serves on the board of directors for numerous companies or non-profit organizations and sits on the editorial boards of several scientific journals.
